Celebrating Faculty & Staff IPE Champions
One of the tenets of LSUHSC-New Orleans is to provide educational programs which prepare students for careers
as healthcare professionals and scientists. A required component of the various curricula is interprofessional
education (IPE). In April 2015, the Health Sciences Center demonstrated its commitment to IPE/team-based
care through the establishment of a centralized office, which supports student education and faculty development.
A foundational component to successful IPE programming is faculty support. The CIPECP and our university
are appreciative of our faculty and their commitment to our students’ learning of evidence-based practices and
their development as IPE facilitators. We would like to recognize 256 faculty and staff who have been engaged
in 1,232 IPE opportunities since the CIPECP was established in April 2015. Over the past 39 months, faculty
from all 6 Schools have interacted with the office.

We can only improve interprofessional learning with your support and feedback. As we continue to grow, IPE
will look different as we will discover ways to increase our efficiency and effectiveness as related to achieving
student learning objectives. The CIPECP is committed to using educational pedagogies to improve what we are
currently doing, so that IPE at LSUHSC-NO is sustainable and produces collaborative practice-ready teams
upon graduation.

Collaboration is a habit… it begins with a point of view, essentially moving from
“me” to “us” from traditional hierarchy to teams. Twyla Tharp
A faculty or staff member engages with the CIPECP in many different ways. It really depends on how he/she
wants to grow as a clinician, educator, professional or researcher. Many of the faculty and staff attended an IPE
keynote lecture or educational session. Some are interested in IPE, but only have time to assist with grading.
Others have engaged in faculty development training to be a Team Up facilitator. There are several faculty from
all 6 Schools who we would like to recognize for their efforts in developing, implementing, assessing and
disseminating research in the area.
Below is an array of journals faculty and staff have published since 2013.

There are moments for us as teachers when our students change
the way we see the world.
We believe this statement is quite telling. Most of our faculty did not have the opportunity to learn from, about
and with each other during formal academic training. Being engaged in Team Up provides faculty the
opportunity to also learn about other professional cultures, roles and responsibilities. Faculty who are health
educators, clinicians or professionals can take this new level of knowledge and apply it immediately within their
practice. It is a great way to learn! In addition, Team Up facilitators are building their educator skills in small
group facilitation, and conflict management/resolution.
70 faculty engaged in Team Up during the 2017-18 academic year. 70% of those faculty have committed
to return during the 2018-19 year (*).
33 new faculty are joining the team, so there will be a total of 81 Team Up faculty facilitators this academic
year.
24 health professional programs are required through accreditation standards to incorporate IPE into curricula

IPE is not the only solution to improving health outcomes in the U.S.,
but we know we can do better
Many of our LSUHSC-NO faculty have demonstrated their commitment to IPE through presentations and the
dissemination of research findings at local and national conferences and organizational meetings. We would
like to congratulate the following individuals for their efforts in this scholarly activity.
Medical errors made
by healthcare
workers are the
3rd
leading cause
of death in the U.S. Makary & Daniel, 2016
Teamwork failures
are contributors to
68.3% of patient
harm events The Joint Commission. Senti-

deaths were twice
as likely to be caused

care with poor team-
work are almost
5 times as likely to
