2015 AUSTRALASIANREPORTING AWARDS
IN 1950, A GROUP OF LEADING BUSINESS PEOPLE ESTABLISHED AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN PREPARING ANNUAL REPORTS TO IMPROVE THE STANDARDS OF FINANCIAL REPORTING AND COMMUNICATING WITH STAKEHOLDERS IN AUSTRALIA. THESE AWARDS, NOW KNOWN AS THE AUSTRALASIAN REPORTING AWARDS (ARA), ARE NOW IN THEIR 65TH YEAR.
The Awards are administered by Australasian Reporting Awards Limited, an independent not-for-profit organisation run by volunteer professionals from the business, government and not-for profit sectors, with the support of professional bodies concerned with the quality of financial and business reporting.
The Awards provide all organisations that produce an annual report an opportunity to benchmark their annual reports against the ARA criteria and world best practice. In the General Award, Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards are presented to recognise the achievement of a high standard.
Competitive Special Awards are presented in specific areas of reporting such as Governance, Work Health & Safety, Communication, Online, Integrated, and Sustainability Reporting.
THE ARA CONTRIBUTES TO ONGOING IMPROVEMENT IN THE QUALITY OF REPORTING BY:
• Preparing and widely distributing criteria based on world best practice as guidelines for preparing an annual report;
• Conducting an annual seminar on reporting;
• Recognising excellence in reporting with Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards; and
• Providing constructive feedback to organisations that enter the Awards.
ABOUT THE ARA
ARA OBJECTIVES1. To promote excellence in the
preparation of informative printed and online reports.
2. To encourage effective communication of financial and business information.
3. To create public awareness of valid and objective measures of performance, and promote a better understanding of the results achieved.
4. To create public awareness of the purposes of organisations, how they function and their achievements.
2015 ARA AWARDS 01
COMMUNICATION REVOLUTION
Not since the invention of the printing press have we seen an event such as that now taking place all around us. It’s the electronic age of instant messaging.
In some ways it can be argued that the annual report is becoming out of date. But the annual report, in hard copy or electronic format, remains the agenda setting instrument. It is the record of what the organisation has achieved; where it is now; its future prospects; and what it plans to do. No matter how it is distributed, the annual report is at the core of the organisation’s accounting to its stakeholders, both internally and externally.
The annual reporting process is an essential part of the organisation’s communication system. Internally, it helps focus attention on performance and meeting the needs of external stakeholders – and because “what interests my boss fascinates me” – the annual report is a critical part of determining the culture of the organisation.
For these reasons the ARA provides a wonderful service. It encourages organisations to do their best; encourages transparency and integrity; and provides assistance to those seeking continuous improvement.
My congratulations to the ARA and all participants in the Awards.
Hugh Morgan AC Patron, Australasian Reporting Awards
“THE ANNUAL REPORT IS A CRITICAL PART OF DETERMINING THE CULTURE OF THE ORGANISATION.”
PATRON’S MESSAGE
02 2015 ARA AWARDS
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
2015 HAS BEEN A SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR THE ARA IN TERMS OF MEETING OBJECTIVES. THE NUMBER OF ENTRIES IN THE GENERAL AWARD INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY; THE NUMBER OF GOLD AWARDS INCREASED FROM 39 TO 45; AND OUR AWARDS PRESENTATION DINNER AT THE PARK HYATT IN MELBOURNE ATTRACTED MORE THAN 360 GUESTS.
That so many of the organisations that entered the 2015 Awards achieved a Gold, Silver or Bronze Award is a clear indication that the general standard of annual reporting in Australasia is increasing. This is the primary objective of the ARA.
By entering the Awards, those involved in preparing reports obtain an independent assessment of the adequacy of their reporting with respect to best practice criteria – which is not otherwise available. In addition, they have an opportunity to receive constructive, educative comments and advice on how to improve their next report by having a feedback session with an experienced ARA adjudicator.
The ARA process could not occur without the contributions of the large number of dedicated professional people who volunteer their time and expertise: as Adjudicators to read and assess a number of reports; as Coordinators to manage the assessment process for each industry category and special award; as Members of the Awards Committee; and as Directors of the not-for-profit governing body, Australasian Reporting Awards Limited. They are the ARA.
The ARA is critically dependent on, and grateful for the financial and in-kind support it receives from its sponsors and supporters. These include the peak body professional associations CPA Australia and Governance Institute of Australia; Safe Work Australia the federal agency responsible for work health and safety; CLP Holdings of Hong Kong; and Rifle Media. Without their support, the ARA Awards could not exist.
As to the future . . . following our successful collaboration with the Hong Kong Management Association on the Joint Australasia-Hong Kong Sustainability Award, ARA is now planning to expand its reach to include organisations in other countries in the Asia-Pacific Region.
Tim Sheehy ARA Chairman
“THAT SO MANY OF THE ORGANISATIONS THAT ENTERED THE 2015 AWARDS ACHIEVED A GOLD, SILVER OR BRONZE AWARD IS A CLEAR INDICATION THAT THE GENERAL STANDARD OF ANNUAL REPORTING IN AUSTRALASIA IS INCREASING.”

Andrew Mackin said, “We are honoured to receive this prestigious award on behalf of the many Woodside employees who prepared content for the report and who made our jobs easy. I just had to make sure every number was right and Sally made sure every word was right!
I would like to congratulate everyone who has received an Award tonight. It is not generally recognised how much time and resources go into creating an
annual report. To do it well is a challenge for all organisations, and particularly so for those in the not-for-profit sector where you have less resources and assistance.
Thank you to ARA and the Awards sponsors. As a CPA Australia member, it is particularly satisfying to receive the Award from CPA Australia.
We are honoured to receive this Award.”
THE REPORT OF THE YEAR – COMMERCIAL AWARD WAS ACCEPTED BY ANDREW MACKIN, HEAD OF WOODSIDE’S REPORTING TEAM, AND SALLY KNIGHT WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CORPORATE AFFAIRS.

No-one does a report in isolation. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to our report, especially my colleagues Tammy Alley and Patrick Dias, and my Executive Manager Mark Bazzacco. It was an incredible team effort.
Working together for the first time in a period of transformational change was not only character building but a wonderful
opportunity to see CSIRO as still a strong organisation full of very smart, enthusiastic people with a love of science who are making real impacts for Australia. It has made me even more in awe of CSIRO’s staff and their achievements.
Thank you to ARA and CPA Australia for this Award.”

Safe Work Australia congratulates the Civil Aviation Safety Authority – winner
of the 2015 Work Health and Safety Reporting Award. Their annual report was selected from a very high standard of finalists including BHP Billiton, Woodside Petroleum and the City of Ryde.
Work health and safety should be a fundamental part of your business decisions, activities and processes. Business leaders and investors are increasingly recognising the positive impact of good work health and safety practices on an organisation’s bottom line.
By including high quality work health and safety information in your annual report, you can demonstrate to investors, current workers and future employees that your
organisation is committed to the health and safety of your workers, contractors and others.
You can illustrate how your organisation identifies and manages all its business risks including work health and safety risks. Importantly, you can also establish your organisation as a leader in work health and safety, one in which work health and safety is not an ‘add on’, but integrated into business decisions and processes.
It is not too late to include work health and safety as part of your 2014-15 annual report. Need inspiration? See the Civil Aviation Safety Authority’s winning annual report or the annual report of one of the other finalists.
Safe Work Australia is proud to be sponsoring the Work Health and Safety Reporting Award for the fourth consecutive year.
Help us achieve the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012-22 vision of healthy, safe and productive working lives and reap the rewards.
Business and investors are increasingly recognising the positive impact of good work health and safety practices on an organisation’s bottom line “

THE REPORTS ENTERED IN THE 2015 ARA AWARDS SHOWED CONTINUED ADJUSTMENT IN RESPONSE TO COMMUNITY, BUSINESS AND REGULATORY EXPECTATIONS AND CIRCUMSTANCES.
Some key discernible good trends were:
• Improved communication, with the better reports telling the story of the organisation more effectively.
• While many reports doggedly repeated design, innovation increased, particularly where visual devices helped to communicate key results and to differentiate the organisation.
• Cross referencing was better and more widely used, particularly cross referencing to additional data on the organisation’s website.
• Budget constraints continued for many, but some low budget productions used innovative design to enhance communication and some made more use of effective online reports.
• Government reports made genuine efforts to reduce the size of reports despite the scale and complexity of some portfolios.
• Community focus was addressed more widely and effectively, especially with local government reports.
Less desirable trends included:
• Fewer year-on-year comparisons, especially in summaries, made it harder to assess performance.
• Reticence to report strategically remained. Outcomes were poorly linked to measures, inputs and outputs. Rather than communicating progress towards strategic objectives reports extolled the virtues of many things done.
• Reports remained large, heightening the need to add an index but commercial reports were slow to copy government and non-commercial organisations with this trend.
• Reading challenges arose where reports used innovative but difficult-to-read fonts and dramatic but difficult-to-discern web designs.
