AUSTRALIA 1951 PL PROOF SILVER SIXPENCE
The Royal Mint in London was contracted to help produce Australian sixpences in 1951. To complete the job, the mint produced a brand new reverse master die. The main difference can be seen in the rim beads. Melbourne Mint issues have 143 beads while the London struck coins have 127 noticeably larger rim beads. This was the third reverse master die type used in the sixpence series.
The PL mintmark above the date on the reverse is an abbreviation of the Latin term Pecunia Londinii which translates as Money of London. An alternate Latin phrase, Percussa Londinio, which translates as Struck at London, is also acceptable.
Proof sixpences dated 1951, were struck in extremely limited numbers, with only 20 issued mainly to mints throughout the Commonwealth where, in most cases, they were retained in archives.
Australian Proof coins are struck from polished or specially prepared dies and have near brilliant surfaces with perfect detail. Toning spots.

The 1/2 Dollar has a diameter of 25mm (similiar in size to Aussie $1 coins) and a weight of approximately 4 grams. The 1 dollar has a diameter of 31mm (similiar in size to Aussie 50 cents) and it weighs approximately 9 grams. Both tokens feature LBTC legend on the obverse including a flower pattern in the centre with a plain edge. These flattened silver ingots known as "tiger tongues" were issued in South-East Asia (around Thailand & Laos regions) from 1571-1592. They are nick-named tiger tongues because of their long, flat, tongue like shape and struck in various weights and sizes, from 91mm to 122mm and weighing 70g to 108g. The local name was 'Lat' or small money and their values were based on their weight. I have purchased a group of these very unusual, original and authentic form of primitive money.
