This one week is certainly not enough to celebrate the work that Surrey volunteers do every day. Our volunteers are cornerstone of this organization. Without our incredible and dedicated volunteer corps we could not achieve our mission of helping older adults live with independence and dignity and continue as ac- tive members of the community. Webster’s defines a volunteer as a “person who does work without getting paid for it.” At Surrey we de- fine a volunteer by the immeasurable difference they make in the lives of older adults in our community. We see that difference every day. Our members write letters, call us and even stop us when we are at our local grocery stores to let us know how much the volunteer they work with is making a meaningful dif- ference in their lives. Whether it involves driving our members, maintaining our databases or helping in our kitchens, our volunteers embody the spirit of “neighbor helping neighbor.” Over the past few months, I have enjoyed getting to know many of our volunteers and am so impressed by their passion, loyalty and dedication. When I meet volunteers like Nancy and Nonie that have been with Surrey for 30 years I am amazed. Amazed and deeply grateful! One of the interesting things I have found when I ask why someone volunteers at Surrey is the recurring theme of the impact that grandparents or other older adults had on their lives. Sadly, I did not have the wonderful experience of having grandparents since three of my four grandparents passed before I was born and the fourth passed when I was five. Now that I am a new grandparent, (my grandson turned one in February), I hope that I will have the same im- pact on his life. I expect that by the time he is ten he will be a full-fledged Surrey volunteer! We at Surrey want to thank all our volunteers not just for one week in April but every day of every week, of every month. As the quote above states, you are priceless. Robert M. Spring Clean Your Internet Security It may feel like a constant battle keeping your computer safe from cybercriminals, snoops, creeps, and other perils of the internet. Follow these suggestions and you should be able to surf in safety.

Update early and often Install updates as soon as they’re available, es-pecially those marked “critical.” Better yet, set your system to automatically update. Install antivirus software and keep it current Installing antivirus software will stop more than 90% of the threats you’re likely to encounter. Costs range from $30/year for BitDefender or Intel’s McAfee or free for AVG or Avast. Don’t fall for that scam The easiest way to get access to your logins is to fool you into giving them up. This is usually achieved via a “phishing” email that looks like it’s from your bank, the IRS or a company in-voice. Defense is easy: Don’t click on any links inside an email. Protect your logins Companies like Apple, Google, Twitter, and Ya-hoo have deployed so-called “two-factor” (or “two-step”) authentication, which requires you to enter an additional piece of information when logging in from an unfamiliar device — usually a 4- or 6-digit code sent via text to your phone. It’s a good idea to change your password and then implement two-factor. Secure all your Wi-Fi passwords Most people don’t realize a home Wi-Fi actually has two passwords. One is for the network — that’s the one you type when you log on from a new device. The other password is for the router; this allows you to go in and change net-work settings (like your Wi-Fi password). Most people remember to change the first set of log-ins but not the second, which is usually set to “admin” or “password.” So anyone within range of your home network could log into your router and capture all the information on your net-work. Don’t get fooled by fake Wi-Fi hotspots If you’re logging on from a crowded café or an airport lounge, you’ll probably see “free” Wi-Fi hotspots galore. Some are legit, some are defi-nitely bogus. You’ll want to find out if in fact the café or lounge offers free Wi-Fi, and what the network name is, before you log on. Use an encrypted connection in public If you are logging on to your webmail or another password-protected account, make sure to use the encrypted version of the website — the ad-dress always starts with https (not http). Other-wise, anything you type is sent in plain text and can be easily captured by someone else on the same network. Article courtesy: Dan Tynen, Editor Yahoo Tech, February 8, 2016.

Help When You Are Worried About A Loved One If you have concerns about an older loved one now is the time to schedule a care management assessment. Is your spouse managing (or not) a chronic condition? Are you concerned about your sister’s safety living alone, the risk of a fall, or her memory?

A comprehensive assessment provides informa-tion about what assistance your loved one actu-ally needs to remain safe and independent. An objective evaluation of their current physical, functional, cognitive, social, financial and safety status is completed in their home by a profes-sional care manager.

The individualized written plan developed fol-lowing the assessment provides recommenda-tions based on your loved ones strengths and areas where assistance would enhance their quality of life. It also provides specific guidance to help plan for the future.

Engaging a care manager before a crisis occurs allows for planning in a calm, unrushed atmos-phere and provides opportunity for everyone involved to express their goals. Family concerns are shared, education on community resources provided, and peace of mind is obtained know-ing you have made informed decisions to help your loved one enjoy their golden years. If you have questions about the assessment process, please contact Wendy at 484-321-6105.

Are You Living Beyond Your Means? Personal Finance Corner By: Jacky Kennedy Sisson Surrey’s Daily Money Manager It’s important to live within your means at any age, but it’s especially important for seniors, many of whom have a fixed income and a finite amount of life savings. Spending too much, too fast can lead to a depletion of retirement savings. Here are some warning signs that spending is too high: The balance on your credit card has been about the same or growing for the past year. If you are not able to pay off the balance or continue to bor-row more, then you are using credit cards to fi-nance your spending. Ideally, credit card balances should be paid off each month because the inter-est rates are very high. If not, then transfer that balance to a card with a 0% rate and make large enough payments to pay off the balance during the introductory 0% rate period. This time frame is usually 6-12 months. A warning sign with credit card usage is if you find yourself transferring a bal-ance multiple times because you can’t pay it off. The bank has been charging overdraft fees on your checking account because your account has been overdrawn several times in the past year. If this is the situation, then you have spent more money than is in the account multiple times. Al-though it is always a good idea to have overdraft protection at the bank for the occasional misjudg-ment, you should not rely on it to fund spending. You buy big ticket items through interest free, deferred payment options because you think you will have the money later on. These offers are very tempting, but are you going to have the money later on? If the balance is not paid off by the time payments are scheduled to begin, then interest will have accrued since the purchase date and will be very high. If you are making major pur-chases without having the money to pay for them, then you are going to end up with debt payments that could be beyond your means. Finally, ask yourself if you are buying things that you don’t really need. It’s important to differenti-ate between a “want” and a “need”. This question is a key element of a financial strategy espoused by author and financial advisor, Suze Orman. If you ask yourself whether a purchase is a “need” or a “want” before buying, you will find yourself mak-ing more practical buying decisions. Think about what would happen if you did not make the purchase. Would you just be disap-pointed, or would there be a real problem? Some-thing to think about.

Surrey in the Community

Go “Surrey U!” Surrey is fortunate to partner with a variety of different community groups. In many cases, Sur-rey is the beneficiary of this community support. However, for some local colleges, Surrey is able to reciprocate and help provide hands on knowl-edge and experience that students use toward their degree. In Devon, Villanova Nursing School students participate in fitness activities and develop presentations about the benefits of exercise and nutrition that they share with members. They also help members by taking blood pressure readings. Devon also has an intern from West Chester Uni-versity who is pursuing her degree in social work. She is working with Home Services staff to create a pilot program for home delivered meals. At the end of the pilot, she will track the results and present results and recommenda-tions for future programs. In Media, Widener University students learn about aging services, help with home delivered meals, assist with STEADI Falls Risk screenings and other activities.

Villanova Nursing students played Flu Jeopardy with members from Media. The game was de-signed to show the importance of getting a flu vaccine every year. Interns and members alike had great fun while improving their knowledge and communication skills. Way to go Surrey U and the students who help in our centers!
