We recently completed the fall testing for students in grades 11 and 12 who haven't met the standard required to meet the state graduation requirement in Math or Language Arts. Our next testing window will be in the spring, at which time we will test all sophomores, as well as juniors and seniors who still need to meet the standard. The spring testing will again be administered between 7:35AM and 10:00AM. The window for ELA is April 30th to May 2nd and for math May 21st and May 22nd. Both tests have been moved back in the test window, so our students have more time in the classroom to be preparing for the tests. Students who are not testing will arrive at school for a 10:00AM start. We believe this method provides an environment which is most conducive for student testing. My mother will start to worry... My father will be pacing the floor.... However, it is important to note, especially for juniors and seniors, that there are other avenues to meet the standard. Students can meet the standard by achieving a high enough score on the SAT or ACT exams. What this means is if your senior student has not met the standard yet, it is imperative to sign up and take one or both national standardized tests that will work, the SAT or ACT. So really, I'd better scurry.... Your student's counselor will be calling them in to discuss this option. Importantly, we will be offering the SAT at Cedarcrest High School on March 9th. This is the second year that we have offered it on campus on a Saturday. We believe this is a more comfortable environment for our students since they don't have to drive out of the valley, early on a Saturday and test at a strange school. I know back in the day I took my own children to locations outside the valley to test and I know it is not only more convenient to test here, but also more relaxing for the student. to talk about stress, anxiety, and life's challenges. Talking with one another is very powerful. A simplecheck-in of finding out what a high and low of theday was can be very insightful.

Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Support:Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Support:Our department, and schools nation-wide, have seen anincrease in the number of students who have expressedsuicide ideation or had an attempt. Suicide is the thirdleading cause of death in teens, and it is totallypreventable.

It is imperative that we recognize the signs so that we can implement preventivesupport strategies. Teens can naturally be dramatic, have mood swings, and secludethemselves from their families which sometimes makes it hard to recognize warningsigns because some of the warning signs are similar to normal teen behavior. Teensmay attempt suicide or have suicidal thoughts when they are depressed, feeloverwhelmed and unable to cope with pressures in his/her life, trapped, or feelunable to problem solve stressors in their lives. Other factors that may contribute toteen suicide include divorce of parents, violence in the home, inability to find successat school, feelings of worthlessness, rejection by friends, substance abuse, death ofsomeone close to the teenager, and suicide/attempt of a friend or someone he/she"knows" online. Counselors and educators nation-wide are talking about thisgeneration's apparent difficulty in being able to successfully problem solve, seekappropriate resources, and communicate effectively when they are struggling. Perhaps technology has influenced the apparent need for immediate resolution tochallenges and has impacted ability to think through things long term and havepatience in solving problems. Whatever it is, it is important to know the warningsigns and respond to them with care. The following are signs that warrant reachingout and having a conversation. Warning signsWarning signs:

Talks about death and/or suicide, even in a joking mannerThinking about a plan to kill selfExpresses worries that nobody cares about him or herHas attempted suicide in the pastDramatic changes in personality and behaviorWithdraws from interacting with family and friendsShows signs of depressionShows signs of substance abuseCutting, burning, or other forms of self-harm (check arms, legs, belly)

Page 5: Cedarcrest High School · 2019. 2. 8. · Cedarcrest High School Home of the Red Wolves! Volume 25 Issue 4 December Message from the Principal... Baby it's cold outside! Winter has

Begins to act recklessly and engage in risk-taking behaviorsBegins to give away sentimental possessionsSpends time online interacting with people who glamorize suicide and maybeeven form suicide pacts (check phones and computers for this! Tumbler, private Snap Chat, second Instagram accounts, and Twitter are becoming verycommon ways to express feelings and suicide ideation.

Prevention of teen suicidePrevention of teen suicide:Having regular discussions with teens about their mental health is important. Doregular check-ins to see how things are going. Don't accept "fine" or "okay". Getdetails. Ask questions. Ask them how they are managing their stress and pressuresthey have in their life. People who are depressed or suicidal do want to talk about it.They often talk about it in detail on private or public social media. If you do haveconcerns, it is crucial you are direct in your questioning and that you say it in such away that they feel comfortable opening up. You need to say, "Are you thinking ofkilling yourself or harming yourself in any way?" Saying, "You aren't thinking ofhurting yourself are you?" is not direct enough and may make them feel like youdon't want them to say yes. Using any of the strategies listed in the stress tips are agreat start to prevention. If a student is suicidal, counseling, residential or outpatienttreatment, and/or medication are helpful. Treating your teen with respect andunderstanding, showing unconditional love, and offering emotional support are life-saving. Show your teenager that it is possible to overcome life's challenges and makesure that he or she knows you want to help. There are a ton of really great resourceson-line to help you. Here are a few:

From the Nurse...Flu Season Seasonal "flu" occurs between October and May and typically peaks in January and February. TheCDCencourages everyone, especially school personnel, to get vaccinated because children are amongthe most vulnerable to the disease.

Wash hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer; Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth; Avoid close contact with those who are already sick; Get plenty of sleep; Eat healthy food and drink plenty of fluids; Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing with a tissue or the crook of your arm; Stay home, if ill, for at least 24 hours after fever is gone.

DECADECA JUDGES NEEDED!!

A very important component of Marketing Education is preparing students for the adult business worldthey will all be entering. Part of that learning experience comes from presenting themselves and theirmarketing solutions in real-world situations. We firmly believe that these young people are not our future-- they are our present and their involvement and accountability in life is required NOW. The main purpose of Marketing/DECA is to provide an environment for students to learn and thendemonstrate competence in specific skills. These young people are discovering that knowledge by itselfis not power; competence in skills is power. Marketing/DECA moves the student from "sit and get"learning to application learning. There is still a little lecture, however, to be competitive in today's worldeconomy those who "can do" and do it well, will win. Bridging marketing skills with student careerinterests can add up to a productive and satisfying life. Every student in high school will be involved insome form of business after post-secondary training. Participation in DECA and DECA competitionshelps a student develop a "can do" attitude. The best analogy we can give about DECA is that it is the "varsity sport for business." Each casestudy/role play is a "real-world" situation in which the student has the opportunity (through a role-play) topresent to our judge(s) what he/she believes to be the best solution(s) to the given case study. Eachstudent has picked his/her event to participate in and will be spending time in December learning andpracticing solutions to his/her specific chosen business environment. On January 10, 2019 over 1300 marketing students from Cedarcrest High School, the Mercer Island,Northshore and Lake Washington School Districts will meet at the Meydenbauer Convention Center andbe given an opportunity to "show their marketing stuff" and compete with other students to see who getsto move on to the state DECA event.Area competition will need 150 judges January 10th from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This letter isasking you to become a volunteer judge or helper for the day. The event cannot happenwithout volunteers.

Page 14: Cedarcrest High School · 2019. 2. 8. · Cedarcrest High School Home of the Red Wolves! Volume 25 Issue 4 December Message from the Principal... Baby it's cold outside! Winter has

The events which Cedarcrest has been assigned to judge are the Business Services, MarketingCommunications, and Quick Serve Restaurant events. We need 30-35 judges this year. Below is a linkto the DECA judge video created by Washington DECA that you may view to see more of what isexpected of judges: https://vimeo.com/121201537. NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY TO BE A JUDGE. We strive to put rookie judges with experiencedjudges in pairs so that we build capacity and make sure you have a great experience.
