CEATEC JAPAN 2008 Exhibits Recent Trend
The CEATEC JAPAN exhibition was held for the ninth time in 2008 and its theme was, “Digital Convergence: Onwards to a New Stage.” CEATEC is a comprehensive and international exhibition of cutting-edge IT and electronics technologies, and it presented to the world innovative ideas for new lifestyles made possible by the convergence of diverse imaging, signaling and data services and technologies. The exhibition saw 804 companies and organizations,
including 289 companies from 27 countries and regions outside of Japan, displaying their products and technologies in 3,121 exhibition booths. In total, there were 196,630 visitors during the five days of the exhibition and on the fourth day of the exhibition (Friday, October 3rd) there were 54,569 visitors, a number that surpassed the single-day attendance record. And the following day (October 4th) saw the highest attendance to date for a Saturday, with 32,576 visitors. The first day of the exhibition was marked by Premiere Time
press coverage and companies introducing their important products and latest technologies. Additionally, the increased number of sophisticated exhibits that encouraged visitor interaction also attracted extensive coverage from a large number of television, newspaper and web-based media organizations. The 2,294 press members who registered for the event also surpassed all previous records, further evidence of how the popularity of the CEATEC JAPAN exhibition showcasing the latest IT and electronics technologies has advanced to a higher level.CEATEC JAPAN 2008 was divided into two main sections, the
“Digital Network Stage” and the “Electronic Components, Devices & Industrial Equipment Stage.” To improve the ease with which visitors could view the product and technology displays this year, the exhibition was concentrated into Halls 1 to 8 at Makuhari Messe. The Digital Network Stage exhibits were presented in Halls 1
to 5 and consisted of two zones, the Home & Personal Zone and the Business & Society Zone. And just like in 2007, popular products in this section included flat-panel and large-size displays, as well as mobile and integrated automotive communication devices. Household appliance networking with televisions and other developments demonstrating the rapid pace of digital convergence were also notable highlights. The displays in the Electronic Components, Devices & Industrial
Equipment Stage were presented in Halls 5 to 8 and included a comprehensive range of MEMS and sensor technologies as well as technologies unveiled for the first time, and the superb variety of technologies exhibited is sure to be found in future products. Both sections at CEATEC JAPAN 2008 focused on the increasing attention placed on environmental concerns in product and technological development as well as the efforts made to reduce CO2 emissions through the use of advanced IT and digital technologies.
●The 3D Video Solution RaceThis year’s CEATEC JAPAN exhibition featured 3D video technologies that can be viewed without supplementary equipment as well as a variety of solutions employing 3D for both everyday life and specialized applications. The diverse range of 3D technologies on display attracted significant attention from a wide range of visitors and media representatives. Pioneer surprised and delighted visitors with their unique 3D floating vision display system, which is a remarkable technology that allowed viewers to enjoy 3D video without supplementary equipment. They also demonstrated technology that allows the easy transfer of segments of 3D images to mobile devices. The Universal Media Research Center of The National Institute of Information and
Communications Technology (NICT) fascinated visitors during the show too with their 3D display technology that included holography viewable without the use of special 3D glasses. Panasonic exhibited their 3D full HD plasma theater system, which reflected the current 3D digital cinema boom in the US. Panasonic designed this system to faithfully recreate cinematic 3D images with full HD resolution for the home environment. And needless to say, getting a ticket for this highly popular presentation was somewhat difficult.Victor JVC presented developmental technology for
converting 2D video to 3D in real-time via simplified processing. Using color data, this technology works by determining the color arrangement based on color depth produce a 3D effect. Thanks to the low-processing load of this technology, incorporation of it into televisions and video cameras in the near future is a definite possibility. Mitsubishi Electric exhibited its laser television model now available in the US, which incorporates a system similar to that of a rear projection television and uses a semiconductor laser as the light source for the 3 primary colors. This system is 3D capable when viewed with special glasses and the demonstration enjoyed considerable popularity at the show. Toshiba’s exhibit of its integral-imaging 3D display system was noteworthy as this technology provides a wider field of vision and KDDI presented their collaborative 3D video technology for its next-generation mobile phone display. Panasonic Electric Works exhibited a dome 3D display system, which can be used to display 3D video images from an endoscope camera to realize specialized surgical procedures. Tohoku University’s Uchida Laboratory displayed their
revolutionary 3D video system that allows for unhindered 3D viewing in brightly lit rooms, and this attracted significant attention from both domestic and overseas visitors. Developed by technologists from around the world, 3Di, Inc.
presented the world’s first commercial open-source 3D virtual server software based on their “OpenSim” system and their 3D virtual internet presentation was well enjoyed by visitors to the show.
●Evolution in Flat-panel TelevisionsThe continuing efforts by manufacturers in their race to develop large screen, high-performance and ultra-thin flat-panel televisions also generated a great deal of acclaim from both domestic and overseas visitors at this year’s show. Sony exhibited their LCD “Bravia” television, which is a mere 9.9mm thick at its thinnest point and incorporates a separate tuner and LED white backlight to produce its very thin dimensions. Sony also presented its 27-inch organic EL display device and an experimental ultra-thin 0.3mm plastic film organic EL display that was developed using an integrated organic thin-film transistor and EL elements. These display devices can even be curved and displayed on a clear screen. Using RGB LED technology, Sharp’s Aquos XS1 showed its superior color reproduction capability made possible by a contrast ratio of 1 million to 1 and an NTSC ratio of 150%. With a thickness of only 22.8mm, this 65-inch, large-size television features thin 2.1ch speakers jointly developed with Pioneer. Sharp held a press conference at their booth during the opening of the show that was well attended by the media. And along with the world’s largest 150-inch 4K2K plasma display, Panasonic also presented prototype plasma and LCD display devices offering a minimum thickness of 24.7mm and 15mm, respectively. Pioneer exhibited their PDP ‘Kuro’ brand television with a depth on only 39.0mm, which when compared to other televisions, reduces the level of black illumination significantly. Pioneer has also been able to further reduce black illumination levels to a fifth of that possible last year, ensuring high-quality images with excellent contrast and sharpness. Toshiba showed their developmental LCD television with the Cell processor that enhances multi-media capabilities and this technology promises to elevate television viewing enjoyment to new heights. At both the Hitachi and Panasonic booths, visitors enjoyed television control systems that use sensors to detect hand movements to eliminate the need for a control terminal to operate the television — a technology that will actually become available for home use in the near future.
●High-definition video solutionsA wide range of the latest technologies for the smooth transfer, processing and reproduction of the large amounts of data associated with Hi-Vision HD video was also on display. Victor JVC displayed their 8K high-contrast project — a system that realizes 8000×4000 resolution with a 1.1 million to 1 contrast ratio made possible by D-ILA device technology. And currently, an 8000×4000 single-device display is possible only by using the D-ILA system. Mitsubishi Electric exhibited a developmental interactive digital signage terminal called “MEETVision-I” and HD distribution system, which is a hybrid distribution system that allows streaming and cumulative download so live content such as sports or other events can be shown in real-time while content already stored on hard disc are displayed. The Natural Vision Promotion Council displayed their
technology for more natural color reproduction while the Morita Laboratory at The University of Electro Communications presented its direct MPEG video processing technology and introduced practical possibilities for video data. Hirose Electric Co., Ltd. demonstrated an ultra high-speed full HD image transmission system and Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. exhibited a high-vision video transmission system for PLC and Wi-Fi networks and presented possibilities for HD video content systems on hard-wired or wireless networks. Astrodesign Inc. exhibited a narrowcast digital transmission solution for use in theme parks, concerts, etc., which offers a simple-to-use answer for enabling operation outside the realm of regular broadcasting.

5. Recent Exhibit Trends
CEATEC JAPAN 2008 Exhibits Recent Trend
●The ever-evolving mobile phoneContinuing a trend seen last year, several companies at CEATEC JAPAN are working on new ways to use the ubiquitous mobile phone. At the NTT DOCOMO booth the media showed great interest in
a mobile phone featuring a separate keypad and screen, and it appeared widely on TV bulletins. As a concept product, they also exhibited a mobile phone that can operate like a projector, and there was always a line of visitors waiting to get a glimpse of it.At the KDDI booth, visitors’ attention was attracted by the display of a new technology that uses a six-axis sensor to detect the attitude of a terminal (both direction and tilt), using this information to represent the actual three dimensional space on a monitor. Also announced were three different concept mobile phones equipped with solar panels. And popular exhibits included the “gakki to keitai” au design project concept models and the “Ply”, a mobile phone with a layered design.Three companies – Nissan, NTT DOCOMO and Sharp –
announced a mobile phone featuring an “intelligent key” (for a keyless entry system). This convenient technology allows a person to open and close a car door using the mobile phone. In addition to this conventional intelligent key function, the newly developed handset is expected to feature a remote control entry function and will be able to prevent a driver from locking himself out of his car.Microsoft exhibited mobile phones featuring Windows Mobile,
and new smart phones featuring touch panel screens debuted from several manufacturers, reflecting a new current in mobile phone trends.Sharp demonstrated a mobile phone application called Tegaki
Chat, described as a new communication tool. When a pair of handsets both have this software installed, two people can “chat” by writing and drawing on their own phone screens; what they see displayed on their screens is identical, even though they can be far apart. These then are some of the latest mobile phone/handset
products and technologies, produced by various companies, which were attracting attention at CEATEC. But the event also provided immediate evidence for the accelerating convergence of information equipment and communications, offering displays of WiMAX – widely expected to be the next generation in high-speed mobile communication technologies – and also the latest mobile computers.
●Maps & car navigation solutionsWith the increasing spread of car navigation systems and mobile phones equipped with GPS, it is not surprising that map- and navigation-based solutions were conspicuous.Zenrin was offering a system that enables seamless sharing of
map information between a variety of terminals – mobile phones, computers, and car navigation systems.NAVITIME JAPAN will next year launch a new concept in car
navigation services using the GPS function of a mobile phone. By harnessing the communication functions of the phone, they plan to launch a practical and detailed car navigation service that can supply information on traffic congestion and speed restrictions in real time.INCREMENT P has introduced a revolutionary system that will
search for stores and other places featured in past TV programs, displaying their position on a map and providing navigation guidance to reach them. The ITS Laboratory of Kumamoto University’s Graduate School
of Natural Science announced a next-generation car navigation system that captures the view in front of the driver with a camera and then superimposes guidance information directly onto the actual video image. This eliminates the conceptual gap that can make it difficult for a driver to relate what is on a digital map with what he actually sees through the windscreen. But, in addition, this safety-enhancing system also virtually eliminates the worry of not paying proper attention to the road ahead because one’s attention is distracted.
●Stressing the connection with social infrastructure and daily life
As well as exhibiting new products and technologies related to communications and computers, NEC chose to highlight its involvement with space development. A model of the Kibo Japanese Experiment Module on the International Space Station (ISS) and a computer simulation for operating the ISS robotic arm proved to be fascinating for visitors. Also on display was a high-capacity optical submarine cable equipped with an optical repeater that assures ultra-high reliability. The booth created a strong impression that NEC’s technologies are deeply interconnected with the social infrastructure and our daily lives. At the Fujitsu booth, visitors were attracted by an encryption
technology for both paper-based and electronic data. This facilitates the sharing, circulation and disclosure of confidential documents, whether they are printed or in digital form. Once the access permissions are specified, the document is encrypted and it is then possible to stipulate the domains in which it may be viewed. The technology can also be used to detect document tampering. Additionally, interest was shown in a sensor-network technology that enables the remote monitoring of farmland to get an idea of how crops are doing, analyzing the results and predicting possible crop damage to provide accurate guidance to those managing the land. Similarly attracting interest was another technology that makes use of advanced compression techniques to enable the high-speed distribution over the Internet of large quantities of video content, such as movies and TV programs, while also ensuring the efficient management of such content, including its copyright.
Panasonic envisioned a living room of the future (3-5 years ahead) in its Concept Zone. This VIERA living room offers not only the conventional connections to cameras, recorders and door phone intercom, but also the ability to monitor washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners, etc. In addition, the company is developing a “life wall” for commercial roll-out after 2015; with entire walls effectively being display surfaces, it becomes very easy to change “wall paper” and other aspects of interior décor – opening up the vision of a new lifestyle. Moreover, Panasonic announced the buttonless Easy Touch Remote Controller, equipped with touch sensors and acceleration sensors. An image of the remote control is displayed on the screen and, if the controller is touched, a “finger cursor” appears. It can even distinguish between left and right hands. It also offers the ability to page through screens simply by shaking the control.
●Conspicuously unique presentations
Exhibited on the stage for electronic components/devices and mounting were ultra-miniature and low-profile components for use in equipment that is becoming increasingly compact and thin. Also, reflecting the growing concern for the environment, there were many cutting-edge components that boast low power consumption and thus contribute to reducing CO2 emissions.Conspicuous too this year were companies that had invested
considerable effort into finding attractive display methods that would prove more enticing to visitors.Murata Manufacturing created three zones – Communication
and Sensing, Automotive, and Energy & Power – where they introduced their key devices. As has become customary at each year’s CEATEC, Murata’s celebrated robots proved to be very popular. The Tyco Electronics Group offered visitors a linear motor car
test drive at their booth, attracting many visitors.
TDK divided their booth into a display zone and a demonstration zone. In the former they exhibited a range of new products in such fields as data recording, wireless communications, and the miniaturization of passive components. In the demonstration zone, where the conceptual theme was the “DC electric eco-home,” there were visual presentations and demonstrations of products and technologies made by TDK to facilitate the “making, storing, transforming and using” of eco-energy. This all served to send a message, addressed to the general public, that TDK is an electronic component manufacturer keen to contribute to the efficient use of energy.Alps Electric created a very favorable impression on a large
number of visitors thanks to their emphasis on quantity and quality in staffing their booth to provide well-informed product explanations.
CEATEC JAPAN also featured a wide variety of exhibits focused on the fuel cell – the next-generation battery. The Toshiba booth had a reference exhibit of a small direct-methanol fuel cell (DMFC). On display was a mobile phone with a built-in DMFC and also a 50ml methanol cartridge, which is said to offer the benefits of compact size, light weight, and simple operability. In addition, many visitors showed their interest in the SCiB, a new type of rechargeable battery.ST Microelectronics demonstrated a method for charging
portable devices using a hydrogen fuel cell system.Hitachi Maxell and others exhibited and demonstrated small
fuel cells, and in addition many competing next-generation battery technologies were on display.Additionally, Nisshinbo Industries put on a demonstration of a capacitor offering world-class performance: very high voltage and very low internal resistance. In a mere 20 seconds this can recharge a miniature electric train that runs for a full 30 minutes – a demonstration that was frequently repeated, to the amazement of visitors.

■Digital Network Stage●Next-generation lighting solutions made possible with LED and organic EL
In the display device and semiconductor zones, there was a glittering array of next-generation lighting solutions employing LEDs, organic EL, etc.Osram Opto Semiconductors demonstrated organic EL lighting
that they plan to have ready for market by 2011-2012. In addition to high intensity and low power consumption, organic EL lighting is ultra-thin and exceptionally easy to process. It is thus expected to be a very welcome addition to our daily lives in future.Sanken Electric introduced examples of thin area lighting that
uses multichip LED modules just 20mm thick. Also, they demonstrated a next-generation LED light source for use in large LCD TVs.Omron’s exhibit of sheet backlighting – just 0.59mm thick – was a
center of attention. (Even the thinnest examples of conventional backlighting for LCD displays are about 0.8mm thick.) And thinness is not all it can offer: even if bent to follow a curve, the entire surface lights with uniform intensity.
●Minute devices born from MEMS technologyThe impressive results of MEMS technology applications attracted attention at several booths. The speck-like body of Omron’s ultra-miniature high-performance
air pressure sensor measures just 1.5mm square. Its performance is such that it can detect the minute air turbulence caused by the beating wings of a butterfly. The sensor’s extraordinary sensitivity is 1mm/sec.ST Microelectronics exhibited two devices that use MEMS
technology: a minute 3-axis analog acceleration sensor and a 3D attitude sensor that can detect attitude in 6 directions.Alps Electric also exhibited many tiny sensors that employ the
MEMS technology that company is rightly proud of. Particularly attention-grabbing was the company’s priority product: a pressure sensor that employs piezoresistance for absolute pressure detection – one of the smallest sensors of its type in the world.
●Providing a glimpse of the future: numerous bright exhibits of illuminating technologies
A feature of CEATEC JAPAN is that, even though its scale may not be large, bright gems of new technologies can be found there.Konica Minolta Opto exhibited a “wearable communicator” that
not only allows several people to look at the same picture in real-time but also frees both hands for work, with no absolutely no diminution of the wearer’s field of vision. There were many unique IT products to provide a glimpse of the future, such as a camera with perspective correction that automatically converts a distorted photo taken at an angle into what it should look like when photographed straight-on, and an eco-friendly beam-down type of solar power generation.BOSCH SENSORTEC exhibited individualistic products,
including the winner of the Product of the Year 2008 Award given by Germany’s Elektronik Magazine, and the winner of the 2008 Global Frost & Sullivan Award.Goldendance which specializes in developing products that
employ bone conduction, has created a cordless transceiver headset that combines bone conduction and Bluetooth to enable clear voice communications, hands-free, in any sort of noisy environment. This company has adopted a pathfinder role in exploring the potential of bone conduction technology.Kodera Electronics, which this year exhibited for the first time at
CEATEC JAPAN, has focused on equipment for processing the wire that is essential for various machines and equipment – in the automobile industry, in the IT industry, and in household appliances. Their lineup of high-performance wire-processing machines is something never before seen at CEATEC JAPAN. This array of unusual products created a fresh impression on visitors, who would inadvertently stop to look at them with obvious interest.

This year's HATS Conference exhibit centered on interoperability demonstrations using broadband services, VoIP (voice over IP) service using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), MPEG4, PBX interconnection and demonstration of interconnection with equipment such as fax and introduction of related products within a virtual office. The Telecommunication Technology Committee (TTC) also introduced its technology unification activities in Japan.
■ACCESSIBILITY PLAZA (INFO-COMMUNICATION ACCESS COUNCIL)
This exhibit included demonstrations of telephone equipment, mobile telephones and media-exchange services designed to meet the specific needs of the elderly and physically challenged, as well as an outline of the Council's overall activities. Mini conferences and other events were also held on the stage in the exhibit area.
■Digital Content Business Park
Contents
To provide direct business opportunities to production companies in the digital content and system software fields, this exhibit featured presentations of digital content sustaining corporate communications, as well as related technologies, products, equipment, services and know-how, targeting companies that use digital contents.
■Life Content Frontier
