– People live close together in cities and small towns.– Religion (Puritanism) is the center of peoples’ lives.

• Study the Bible regularly• Go to church for long hours on Sundays• Theocracy: church leaders are political leaders (only white males)• Salem Witch Trials: 1692 in Mass.

– Education: public schools began in MA (Horace Mann) – Government:

• Life in…Middle Colonies– People live on farms, cities and towns– Religion: Many different religions, known as

a place for “religious tolerance.”• Catholics, Quakers, Methodists, Baptists

– Government: Gov’ts were set up to treat people equally and accept differences

– Famous people: William Penn

• Life in…Southern Colonies– People are spread out on plantations– Rich plantation owners form a “planter aristocracy.”– Education: Only the wealthy are educated– Racism: Slavery leaves a legacy of

racism/discrimination the south continues to struggle with. (White vs. Black)

– Georgia: “debtor colony”where debtors from England were sent. “Buffer Colony” buffer from Spanish owned Florida

Notes 6Pre-Revolutionary Events

• First Great Awakening: evangelical religious movement that spread all over the colonies. Increased religious tolerance w/the development of new religions.

• Salutary Neglect: period from 1607 to 1763 where the British did not enforce laws on the colonies Leads to SELF GOVERNMENT

• French and Indian War (1754-1763): War btw the British and the French in Canada. Many colonists fought for England in the war. Caused England to have HUGE debts.– Proclamation of 1763: Line drawn by England that the

colonists can’t move past-makes them feel caged in
