3 INTRODUCTION

Introduction

Thank you for choosing Harman Kardon. The CDR 2 Dual-Deck CD Player/Recorder is aunique product, designed not only to play backyour existing library of compact discs, but alsoto record compact discs from either analog ordigital programs. You may feed signals (forrecording) to the CDR 2 from external sourcessuch as an A/V receiver, a tuner, a tape deck ora CD player, or you may simply place a CD inone deck, and make a copy using a recordableCD in the other deck.

Designed and engineered by Harman Kardon, the CDR 2 is the world’s first audio CD recorderwith 4x speed capability. This means that it willtake only 15 minutes to copy a 60-minute disc.

The CDR 2 not only records with the highestspeed and quality available but it is also anaudiophile CD player. Through the use of AKM digital-to-analog converters (DACs), the CDR 2’s performance rivals the most sophisti-cated high-end players. Should you wish tobypass the internal DACs and use an externaldigital processor, both coax and optical-digitaloutputs are available. Thanks to the CDR 2’sdual-tray design, you may even play back twoseparate discs at the same time, for parties ormulti-room applications. To make CD playbackmore enjoyable, the CDR 2 also features a widerange of program and repeat functions.

Since CD recorders are a relatively new technol-ogy, this may be your first CD-R product.Although CD recorders resemble play-only CDmachines in many ways, there are some impor-tant differences between a standard CD and aCD-R. In addition, making a CD-R recording isalso a different process than what you may befamiliar with for making audio tape or cassetterecordings. For that reason, we encourage youto read through this manual so that you arefully acquainted with the way CD recordingworks. This small investment in your time willpay major dividends in the enjoyment that willresult from proper use of the CDR 2.

If you have additional questions about thisproduct – its installation or operation – that arenot answered in this manual, please contactyour dealer, who is your best source of localinformation. You may also contact HarmanKardon via e-mail through our Web site atwww.harmankardon.com.

12 INSTALLATION AND CONNECTIONS

Important Note: To prevent possible damageto your speakers or other components in youraudio system, we strongly recommend that ALLsystem components, including the CDR 2, beturned off and unplugged from their AC powersource when any connections are made or anew component is installed.

Locating the CDR 2Since the CD transports in the CDR 2 are preci-sion instruments, they are subject to interfer-ence from vibration. To minimize the possibilityof skipping during playback or recording, it isrecommended that the unit be placed on alevel, solid, vibration-free surface.

When installing the CDR 2 in a cabinet or tightspace, always make certain that there is enoughroom in front of the unit for the disc drawers toopen fully, and that there is enough spaceabove the unit so that discs may easily beinserted in the disc drawers.

In addition to the safety considerations outlinedon page 4, it is also recommended that theCDR 2 not be placed in a location that is sub-ject to direct sunlight or extreme heat or cold,as these conditions may damage the discs usedin the player, or the player itself. Note thataudio amplifiers or high-power receivers, aswell as certain other electronic products, maygenerate significant heat. For that reason, donot place the CDR 2 directly on top of anamplifier, receiver, or other heat source. Alwaysallow at least one inch of free space on allsides of the CDR 2, as well as other electronicproducts, to allow for proper ventilation.

The unit should also be kept away from sourcesof water or damp conditions.

Connections to Your Audio SystemWhen connecting the CDR 2, think of theprocess as if your were connecting a standardCD player and a tape or cassette recorder, withthe addition of the digital connections.

Play-Deck ConnectionsThe rear-panel connections labeled “CDP” referto the outputs of the Play Deck 3, whichfunctions as a standard CD player. Connect theanalog left/right CDP outputs ¡ to the CDinputs on your receiver, preamp or surround

processor. For best playback results, a digitalconnection is recommended, using either thecoaxial ¢ or optical ª outputs. Connect themto the matching coax or optical inputs of yourreceiver, preamp, processor or external digitaldecoder. Note that you may have to change asetting on the receiver or processor to link thedigital input to the “CD” button or input selec-tor. Consult the owner’s manual on that devicefor details, as this configuration may vary fromunit to unit.

Record-Deck ConnectionsThe rear-panel connections labeled “CDR” referto the inputs and outputs for the Record Deck%. Depending on the capabilities of yourreceiver, preamp or processor, you may find itconvenient to connect the analog inputs andoutputs to the jacks marked for a tape recorder. As the CDR 2’s functions resemble those of a standard tape recorder, this might make iteasier for your select it as an input. Connect theanalog CDR-Out jacks ™ to the Play/In jacksof a Tape or Aux input on your receiver or pre-amp. Connect the CDR-In jacks £ to the TapeRec/Out jacks on your receiver or preamp.

To play the output of the Record Deck throughthe digital decoder in your receiver or an exter-nal processor, connect the CDR Coax-Out ∞or CDR Optical-Out • jacks to the matchingdigital-input jacks on your receiver or processor.Note that you may have to change a setting onthe receiver or processor to link the digitalinput to the “Tape” button or the specific inputselector associated with the digital inputs.Consult the owner’s manual on your receiver orprocessor for details, as this configuration mayvary from unit to unit.

To make recordings from external digitalsources, such as a CD, DVD or MD player, con-nect the CDR Coax-In § or CDR Optical-In¶ jacks on the CDR to the digital output jackson your receiver or processor. If your receiverdoes not have digital-output jacks, you mayconnect the CDR Digital Inputs §¶ on theCDR 2 directly to the digital outputs on yourCD player or other digital device. If the CD play-er has BOTH types of outputs, you may want toconnect one to the input of your receiver andthe other directly to the CDR 2.

Connections to a portable digital CD or MDplayer may also be made by connecting theCoax Digital Output of the player to the Front-Panel Digital Input 6 on the CDR 2. Note thatwhen both are digital inputs are connected, theCDR 2 will give priority to the front-panel input§. If it is impractical to disconnect the rear-panel input when you need to use the front-panel jack, simply turn off the device connectedto the rear-panel input. This will stop the digitalsignal, and permit the front-panel jack to beused.

IMPORTANT NOTES ON DIGITAL CONNECTIONS:

COAX CONNECTIONS: Although digital-coaxconnections use the same type of “RCA” phonojack as standard analog signals, please takespecial care to connect digital signals only todigital jacks. In many cases, the digital jacksmay be identified by an orange colored insertring around the center of the jack. When making digital connections, be sure to usecoax-interconnect cables, such as the one sup-plied with the CDR 2 or cables intended forvideo applications. Even though they have thecorrect type of RCA connector, do not useaudio-interconnect cables that have twistedpair construction, as they are not appropriatefor digital signal use. If you have any questionsabout the type of cables to use with the CDR 2,consult your dealer.

OPTICAL CONNECTIONS: There are a numberof different types of optical connections, somake certain that you use only “TOS” type opti-cal cables with the CDR 2. To ensure properconnection of optical cables, fully insert theminto the jack until there is an audible click. Thistells you that the connector has been completelyinserted. Remember to save the plastic dustcaps that cover the optical jacks, and replacethem when a jack is not in use to prevent dustfrom entering the connection point.

14 CD RECORDING BASICS

CD Recorders (CDRs) are similar to standard CDplayers, with the addition of the features andcontrols needed for recording. Functions suchas play, search and programming for playbackwill be familiar, but the recorder will functionslightly differently than what you may be usedto for magnetic tape recorders.

Disc TypesUnlike a conventional CD player, the CDR 2uses three types of discs, and it is important tounderstand how each one plays.

Both decks in the CDR 2 will playback any conventional CD that bears this logo.

Discs that bear this logo may berecorded on one time, and when they are final-ized they will play in either deck in the CDR 2or in any conventional CD player, includinghome, car and portable models. the RecordDeck % on the CDR 2 may also be used to record on these discs, and it will play CD-R/Audio discs even if they have not beenfinalized.

Discs that bear this logo may berecorded on, and they may also be erased andreused. They may be recorded on or played onthe Record Deck % of the CDR 2 and inother CD-RW recorders or CD-RW compatibleplayers. They will NOT play back in most current CD players unless the player is CD-RWcompatible.

Discs designed for use incomputer CD-R drives may not be used forrecording in the CDR 2. Only discs specificallydesigned for use in consumer CD audiorecorders may be used. If you attempt to use ablank-computer-type recordable disc for recordingon the CDR 2 you will see a DISC ERRORmessage in the Information Display K andrecording will not be possible. However, discsthat have been recorded in the CD-R drive of a computer may be played in the CDR 2,provided that they have been properly finalizedin accordance with audio standard IEC958.

Note that the CDR 2 is specifically designed forthe recording and playback of consumer audiodiscs, and cannot be used to copy data discs,DVD discs, or other optical discs used by video-or computer-game systems.

CDR Terminology and Display MessagesCompact disc recording has its own terminology, and some of the messages you will see when using the CDR 2 may be new toyou. Before using the CDR 2, you may wish tofamiliarize yourself with some of the terms usedby the CDR 2. Additional error message displaysmay occasionally appear. Please see page 23for a complete explanation of those messages.

Finalize: This term refers to the processthat completes the recording of a disc byrecording a final Table of Contents and prepar-ing the disc so that it may be played on othermachines. A CD-R disc may not be played onother CD players until it is finalized. However, once the finalization process is complete, a CD-R disc may not be recorded on again.CD-RW discs only may be “Uunfinalized,”so that additional tracks may be recorded on a disc.

TOC: Stands for Table of Contents and itrefers to the data recorded on each CD thattells the player how many tracks are on thedisc, the total time of the disc and the runningtime of each individual track. Each time a discof any sort is placed in the CDR 2, you will seea TOC to indicate that the unit is reading thisdata from the disc. This is required to copy thetrack information to any recording.

OPC: Stands for Optical ProcessingCalibration. When you see this message in theInformation Display for the Record DeckK, it means that the laser transport inside theunit is making the calibrations and adjustmentsneeded so that the recording process is optimized for the specific disc in use.

BUSY: When you see this message, it meansthat the Record Deck is completing part of therecord operation. When you see this message,do not press any buttons; simply wait until themessage clears from the display.

DISC FULL: This message will appearwhen there is not enough room left on an unfi-nalized disc to record all the tracks you haveprogrammed. When you see this message youmay either erase tracks from a CD-RW disc tomake room, or you must use a fresh CD-R orCD-RW disc.

20 CD RECORDING

CD Recording

Making recordings on the CDR 2 is simple andeasy once you become accustomed to thebasics of CD Recording. Before making yourfirst recording, please take a moment to reviewthe CDR Basics on page 14. In particular, youwill need to become familiar with the types ofdiscs that may or may not be used in the CDR 2. In addition, some terms used in the fol-lowing pages may be new to you. The followingdefinitions and information will help you tomake CD recordings using the CDR 2’s manyfeatures:

• The CDR 2 accepts analog inputs, digital coaxinputs and digital-optical inputs. Before mak-ing a recording, be certain that you haveselected the correct input.

• After a disc is recorded, it must be finalized. This process adds the final table of contentsdata to the disc and makes it playable onother machines. Until a disc is properly final-ized, it may not be played on any othermachine.

• The CDR 2 may record on either CD-R or CD-RW discs, but they must be of the typespecifically designed for use in consumer-audio CD recorders. These discs may be rec-ognized by looking for the words “DigitalAudio” in the compact disc logo on the blankdisc or its packaging. Discs with the logoreading only “Compact Disc/Recordable” aredesigned for computer data recording, andthey will NOT work in the CDR 2.

• CD-R discs may not be erased or have material added to them once they have beenfinalized.

• At least four (4) seconds of blank recordingtime must remain on an unfinalized disc forrecording to take place.

• The maximum number of tracks that may berecorded on a disc is 20. If more than 20tracks are programmed, a FULL messagewill appear.

• Note that some CD-R/CD-RW audio recordingdiscs may be used for single-speed recordingsonly. If you use a disc with such a warning, make certain not to dub at that 2x or 4xspeed. However, the CDR 2 has been testedfor compatibility with a wide range of blankdiscs from manufacturers throughout theworld. In most cases, blank discs will producehigh-quality recordings at any dub speed.

• In some rare cases, a CD player may not becompatible with CD-R discs. If you find that aCD-R disc plays in some players but not inothers, the fault is most likely with the player, not with the recorded disc or the CDR 2.Remember that CD-RW discs made in theCDR 2 will play only in CD players that are

specially designed to accommodate CD-RWdiscs.

• Some commercial CD discs may contain acopy protection data bit that will prevent thedisc from being dubbed. In that case, theCopy Prohibit Indicator G will light toremind you that the inability to record isintentional, and not the result of a problemwith the CDR 2.

• This product is equipped with the Serial CopyManagement System (SCMS) to protect therights of copyright owners. As a part of thissystem, it is possible to make a copy of mostCDs for your own personal use. However, it isnot possible to make a digital copy fromanother digital copy. It is possible to make ananalog copy of a digital copy.RECORDINGS MAY BE MADE FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY, AND ANY UNAUTHORIZED COPYING IS SUBJECTTO THE APPLICABLE LAW.

• The CDR 2 will not copy DVD discs, computer-data discs, CD-based computer or video-gamediscs, or digital audio discs with a sample ratethat is not compatible with the range of theCDR 2s sample-rate converter.

Recordings on the CDR 2 may be made in anumber of ways:• Discs may be dubbed using the playback

deck on the CDR 2 as a source. These copiesmay be made in real time, at twice normalspeed, or at four times normal playbackspeed.

• Recordings may be made from an externalCD player or other digital source that is synchronized with the dub being made in theCDR 2.

• Recordings may be made from any compati-ble external digital source.

• Recordings may be made from an externalanalog source.

Disc Dubbing The easiest way to make a copy of an entiredisc is to use the CDR 2’s internal dub capability.

First, insert a blank or unformatted disc in theRecord Drawer %. When the disc is inserted, the CDR 2 will examine it to determine if it is a CD-R or CD-RW disc, and optimize itself for the best possible recording. This is indicatedby OPC message in the InformationDisplay K.

Next, select a dub speed. The default speed is areal-time dub, where the recording takes aslong as the actual running time of the disc. However, with the CDR 2 you may also select2x dubbing or 4x dubbing. Press the Speed

button s# to select a speed as indicated bythe 2x/4x Indicators F. When no SpeedIndicator lights, the unit is set to real-timerecording. Note that the slower the record-dubspeed, the more tolerant the unit is of errors onthe blank disc. However, with most high-qualityblank discs, the 2x and 4x speeds should notpresent a problem.

Place the disc to be dubbed in the PlayDrawer 3 and wait until the Table ofContents data is read and the InformationDisplay K shows the track and running timedata for the disc.

When you are ready to start the dub, press theDubbing Button l). The Play Deck willbegin to read the track information again tomake certain that there is enough space on theblank disc for the recording. If there is NOT sufficient room on the blank disc, a DISCFULL message will remind you to use another disc. During this process the DubbingIndicator H will light, the Record IndicatorT will flash and a BUSY message will flashin the Record Deck’s Information DisplayK. When both Information Display Indicatorsreturn to normal, with indications of 01 00:00 press the Select Buttonj* to start the dub.

While the dub is in progress, you will see thetrack numbers and running time increase as the disc is copied. The Level Indicators will alsoflash but this is only for your reference, asrecord levels may not be adjusted during digitalrecordings. It is possible to listen to the discwhile it is being dubbed by selecting the appropriate input on your receiver, preamp orprocessor:

Important Note: When a high-speed (2x or4x) dub is being made, you will hear the play-back at the faster speed. Fast speed playbackincreases the pitch of a sound, and whenplayed back at high volume levels this maydamage your speakers. DO NOT use high vol-ume levels when listening to high-speed dubswhile they are in progress.

The dub will stop automatically when thesource disc has played through to the end. Afterthe dub is finished, the Information Display willshow an UPDATE message, and then returnto normal operation. To manually stop a dub-bing operation, press the Stop buttonx&¸ for either deck.

As with all recorded CD-R/CD-RW discs, thedisc must be finalized before it can be played inother machines. See page 22 for instructions ondisc finalization.

Notes on Dubbing:• If you wish to make a dub with the tracks in

a different order from the original disc, omittracks on a disc, or make a dub that mixestracks from different discs, create a Program-Playback List before pressing the Select button j* to start the dub. Instructionsfor creating a Program List may be found onpage 18. NOTE: Dubs containing ProgramLists may only be made at the 1x speed. Ifyou attempt to make a Programmed Dub atthe 2x or 4x speed, the unit will automaticallyselect the 1x speed.

• The Pause buttons do not operate while adub is in progress.

• Tracks will be added automatically to mirrorthe track structure of the original disc.

• The Total Time indication of the recorded CDmay vary slightly from the original due to vari-ations in the spin speed of each drive, but thisis normal. No information has been lost in therecording process.

• If the original disc being dubbed is a digitalcopy or if it contains copy-prohibit signals, theunit will automatically make a copy using ananalog output from the disc.

CD Sync RecordingCD Sync recording allows you to make an auto-matic digital recording from an external CDplayer, DAT or MD. During CD Sync Recording, the record unit starts in sync with the source, and tracks are added automatically.

To make a CD Sync recording, first select theappropriate digital input by pressing the Inputbutton v until the desired COAX orOPTICAL indication appears in the RecordDeck Information Display K. CD Syncrecordings may not be made from an analoginput.

Next, make certain that there is a fresh disc inthe Record Drawer for the recording. Press theCD Sync button w9 and note that theSync Indicator I will light and the RecordIndicator T will flash. Select the type ofrecording to be made:

When the desired mode has been selected, start the playback from the source machine. TheCDR 2 will automatically recognize the incom-ing digital data and begin recording. If thesource material is a CD, the track numberingfrom the original disc will be carried over to the dub.

The recording will continue until the CDR 2senses that the playback is finished when therein no incoming signal for more than three sec-onds. At that point the recording will stop. Youmay also stop the recording at any time bypressing the Record Deck Stop buttonx&. If the Record Disc does not haveenough space to complete the recording, thedub will stop and a DISC FULL messagewill be displayed.

After the recording is complete, an UPDATEmessage will appear briefly, and the unit willthen return to normal operation. Remember toFinalize the recorded disc so that it may beused in other machines.

Recording from an External SourceTo record from an external source, first place aCD-R or CD-RW audio disc in the RecordDeck %. Next, select the input to be used bypressing the Input button v. Pressing thebutton will cycle between the input choices, which will be shown in the InformationDisplay K as COAX, OPTICAL andANALOG. In addition, the Digital IndicatorY will light when either the coax or opticalinputs are selected, and the Analog IndicatorX will light when the analog inputs are selected. Press the Record button 8t andthen the Play/Select button j* to startthe recording.

Note that when the coax digital input is selected, the connection may be made to eitherthe rear panel Coax Input § or the Front-Panel Digital Input 6. If a signal is presentat both coax inputs when a recording is made, the front-panel input will be used as the source.

Press the Auto/Manual button m to selecthow tracks will be numbered on the recordeddisc.

• The default mode is Manual. In that mode foreither digital or analog recordings, you mustadd track numbers manually by pressing theTrack Increment button n when youwish to increase the track number.

• The Auto mode will add track numbers auto-matically, in one of two ways. When trackdata is present from a digital recording, it willbe carried over to the new copy disc. Thus, when the CD being played moves from onetrack to the next track, the copy disc will alsoincrease the track number by one. Whenrecording from an analog source, activate theAuto mode by pressing the Auto/Manualbutton m once and note that the AutoIndicator W will light.

• In the Auto mode for recordings from an ana-log source or a digital source with no trackdata, the track number will be increasedwhen the CDR 2 receives silence for 3 sec-onds. The recorder will also go into the Pausemode until the input source resumes. To acti-vate the Auto mode, press the Auto/Manualbutton m once and note that the AutoIndicator W will light.

To prepare for a recording, press the Recordbutton t8. The Record Indicator T willflash, and the word BUSY will briefly appearin the Information Display K. When theDisplay returns to the track and running-timeinformation, the unit is ready to record.

Start the actual recording by pressing thePlay/Select button j*. Note that theRecord Indicator T will stop flashing andInformation display will begin to show the run-ning time of the recording and the track data.Depending on which mode of track incrementhas been selected as described above, tracknumbers must be increased manually or theywill be added automatically. Regardless ofwhich mode has been selected, a track may beadded at any time by pressing the TrackIncrement button n.

Note: If there is a pause in the playback signalfor more than 3 seconds for digital recordingsand 10 seconds for analog recordings, the CDR 2 will stop the recording. Also, when thePause button is pressed during a recording, thetrack number will increase by one number andthe recording will stop and must be restartedby pressing the Select button j*.

22 CD RECORDING

CD Recording

Unlike conventional analog tape recorders, theCDR 2 does not require level setting whenrecordings are made from a digital source.Although the Level Indicator C will operate, this is only informative and the level may notbe changed or adjusted. However, when youare making a recording from an external analogsource such as a cassette recorder or the ana-log output of a receiver or preamp, you shouldadjust the input levels using the Record-LevelControl ^. Adjust the levels so that the bluesegments of the display are almost all lit, andthe red segments flash only occasionally. If thered segments are constantly lit, the recordingwill be distorted and produce unacceptablequality.

To stop the recording, press the Stop buttonx&. The recording will automatically stop ifit takes more space than is available on the CD-R/RW disc. A DISC FULL messagewill appear to remind you that a new disc isneeded.

At the end of a recording, a BUSY messageand an UPDATE message will appear briefly, and the unit will return to normal operation.Remember to Finalize the disc after recordingso that it may be used in other players.

Finalizing CD-R and CD-RW DiscsFinalizing is a simple process that completesthe recording of a disc so that it may be used inother players. When a recording is finished, adisc must be Finalized. Once that is done, a CD-R disc may not be changed or added to.CD-RW discs are “locked” once they areFinalized, and they must be Unfinalized to permit additional recording or erasure.

To Finalize a disc, place it in the RecordDrawer %. Once the disc’s Table of Contentsinformation has been read and the OPC processhas been completed, press the Finalize buttono@ and note that the Finalize IndicatorU will begin to flash. Within three seconds, press the Select button j* and note thatthe Finalize Indicator U will stop flashing.

The Finalization process will take between 60and 90 seconds, depending on the length ofmaterial recorded on the disc. During theFinalization process the Record Deck will notaccept any operating commands.

When the Finalization process is complete theFinalize Indicator U will go out, and theR/RW Indicator P will also go out as anindication that the disc is now playable onother players. The CD Indicator S will remain lit.

Unfinalizing and Erasing CD-RW DiscsCD-RW discs are unique in that they are bothrecordable and rewritable. This means that youmay use them over again like a cassette tape. However, the process of reusing a CD-RW discis slightly different from that used with tapes.

Unfinalizing a CD-RW DiscTo keep the material that is already recorded ona CD-RW disc but to add an additional trackand erase single tracks, you must first unfinalizethe disc. To do that, place the CD-RW disc inthe Record Deck % and wait until the Tableof contents data has been read.

Press the Erase button u! twice andcheck to make sure that the Erase IndicatorV flashes and the word TOC appears in theRecord Deck Information Display K.Within three seconds, press the Select buttonj* to start the process. The EraseIndicator V will remain lit and stop flashing, and the Information Display K will switchto OPC and then back to TOC.

When the process is finished, the EraseIndicator V will go out, and the display willreturn to normal. The disc is now ready to havesingle tracks removed or additional tracksadded.

Erasing an Entire CD-RW DiscErasing the entire contents of a disc is simple, and it does not matter if the disc has beenfinalized or not. To erase the disc, press theErase button u! twice if the disc hasNOT been finalized and once if it has beenfinalized, so that the word DISC appears inthe Information Display K and the EraseIndicator V flashes. To start the erasure, press the Select button j* and note thatthe Erase Indicator V will stop flashing. Theerasure process takes about a minute, and it iscomplete when the Information Display resetsto 00 00:00 and the Erase Indicator Vgoes out. The disc is now totally erased andmay be reused.

Erasing a Single TrackThe individual tracks on a CD-RW disc may beerased one at a time, starting with the lasttrack on the disk, or you may erase more thanone track. Note that before individual tracksmay be erased the disc must be unfinalized. Ifthe disc is finalized, follow the instructionsabove for unfinalizing before proceeding withthese steps.

To erase only the last track, press the Erasebutton u!. Note that the InformationDisplay will display 01 TRK and the EraseIndicator V will flash. Press the Select button j* within three seconds and notethat the Erase Indicator will stop flashing. When the Erase Indicator V goes out theInformation Display K will show the totalnumber of tracks that now remain on the disc.

You may erase more than one track, countingbackwards from the last track. First, press theErase button u!. Note that theInformation Display will display 01 TRK andthe Erase Indicator V will flash. Press theNext button zÓ or Previous buttoniÔ until the number of tracks to be erasedappears in the Information Display K. Forexample, when 06 TRK appears in the dis-play a total of six tracks will be erased, count-ing back from the last track on the disc. Next, press the Select button j* within threeseconds of making the track selection and notethat the Erase Indicator V will stop flashing. When the Erase Indicator V goes out theInformation Display K will show the totalnumber of tracks that now remain on the disc.

Important Note: Tracks at the beginning or inthe middle of the disc may not be erased untilall of the discs after them have been erased.

Important Note on Erasure andFinalization Times: Regardless of the speedat which a disc was recorded, the CDR 2 willerase and finalize discs at the 4x speed to mini-mize the length of the process. However, insome cases it may be necessary for the unit torepeat the erasure or finalization due to thenature of an individual disc. For that reason, itis normal for the time required to completethese steps to vary from one disc to another.
