course for slalom. Greg Lukach was the Safety Steward and workedwith Dan to tweak the course. When it was set it was a good coursewith lots of back and forth. When the participants arrived to walk thecourse, they found a layout that some felt favored the small car over thebigger high horse power cars. Variety, they say, is the spice of life. The first day went very well, in my opinion. We got started at 11:45,just 15 minutes past advertised time. The runs went fairly fast and itwas obvious that six runs could be attained. During the first heat, Itried something a little different and assigned work stations to everyone in the grid during their driving session. We finished the sixth runat about 1:40 and I asked all the workers for the second heat to be inplace so we could start at 1:50. We got started at 2:00 and were fin-ished at about 3:30. Fun runs were the order for the next 40 minutesand then it was time for trophies. The FTD when to Galen Williams,FTDI was Russ Bedford, and FTDIS was Clint Greist. I had great help on Saturday and registration was started and finishedon time. Although, we were a little late with the drivers meeting, Ithink it was a very smooth, fun, exhilarating day. Sunday, I arrived at 6:45 and set the course I had prepared. While Doug
Miller and I were getting our cars ready we had a visitor, prior to8:00am. He asked what was going on and we gave him low-down. Hetold us about his new Saturn Sky and a 67 Mustang. We told him tobring a car back and sign up. He said he would be back later to see howit all works. He came back later in the day during the second heat, andwas very excited about getting involved, but too late to drive. GregLukach arrived about 8:00 with Russ Bedford and we did the obliga-tory test run of the Event Chair and Safety Steward. I think Greg likedthe course. More help arrived and we started everything on time ex-cept Sunday we had the drivers meeting on time and actually got startedat 11:15. EARLY. We even had WICD TV do interviews with KerryRiley and myself. I paid the guy more and it got on the news and website. It was a nice plug for the club. This early start set us up for 7 runsand plenty of fun runs for those that had too much rubber left. The toptrophies on Sunday went as follows: Russ Bedford FTD, Kerry RileyFTDI, and FTDIS went to Adam Deffanbaugh. Both days allowed me to mingle and enjoy the participants enjoyingthe event. Both days allowed me to give out all of the trophy T-Shirts. And, both days allowed me to have all of the help that was needed to

July 25, 2008Rallymaster: Bob TownsendWorkers: Karen Townsend, John ColemanCold Run: Jerry White
The Friday Nighter rally for July was the 2nd annual Double ArrowRally. Rallymaster Bob Townsend used a different kind of main roadrule in setting up this rally. Although, the rally was very straight-forward with no tricks, drivers were instructed to make a turn at every“Double Arrow”sign that was at a sideroad. This made for long stretcheswithout an instruction. In fact, on the first leg, no instructions wereused to reach the first check point after the odometer leg. Even thoughthere were few instructions, the main road rule caused the teams to beon their toes throughout the event.
Rally expert Chuck Hanson ventured over from Indianapolis, but with-out a partner, so he teamed up with our Jon Flora, in the Nav. class. For the first time in the last several events, we did not have any novice

Double Arrow Rallyteams. Even though John Coleman was suffering with a broken leg, heshowed up to help Bob with the check point duties.
The rally started out uneventfully, but it quickly turned a little chaoticwhen a sherrif’s deputy stopped a car shortly after the Odometer legbecause of “suspicious”activity in the area. After explaining that wewere not doing anything illegal, cars were allowed to proceed. Thiscause them to miss the first check point, and the lone checkpoint crewto have to hurry to the next control to avoid missing the front runningcars. Bob and John made it to control 2 with only about 10 seconds tospare. All of the cars were able to make it to the control and were ableto make it through the rest of the rally. Russ & Chriss Bedford missedthe last control because Chris was starting to experience car-sickness.
After the last control, the teams met at the Home of Bob & Karen forthe results and a cookout prepared by Karen. Everyone agreed that thefood was delicious and the rally was fun.
July 19 & 20 AutoX’s at Rantoul

On Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20, CCSCC held their onlySCCA sanctioned autocrosses at the Rantoul Aviation Center in Rantoul. We had great events with 37 entrants on Saturday and 46 entrants onSunday. The course was a "usual" Rantoul course, with a slightlyshorter (in time) course on Sunday. Russ Bedford got FTD on Satur-day and Barney Carlson on Sunday. FTDi went to Russ Bedford onSaturday, with Brian Davis (a 2nd generation CCSCC autocrosser) ac-tually getting the trophy and to Barney Carlson on Sunday with PeteHetman actually getting the trophy. Remember that you can only getone trophy, so if you get FTD, FTDi goes to the 2nd place fastest in-dexed time.
Thanks to everyone who helped. The usual crew was there, along withClark Walker and several others who really helped us get going closeto on time. The course was pretty simple both days with a crossovernear the end of the course for the first day, but none for the second day. This time the course didn't spell anything out......
Thanks for everyone who attended and made it a success for CCSCCand for CIR/SCCA. This event is the only one that counts for points inboth the CIR championship and the CCSCC championship.
run the event. I will say that there was not one person that came todrive that did not help in a big way. I want to thank all of the partici-pants for the effort they gave to make this event go. I felt blessed by thecomments on both days. It appeared to me that everyone had a goodtime. I tried to be laid back and I think I was successful because of theterrific help I got from the Club Members and non-member regulars. Doug Miller, Barry Rowe, Dennis Miller, Emanuel Martin, Brian andSandy Grable, John Li, Russ Bedford, Kerry Riley, Mike Mathews,Austin Maguire, Nick Owens, Dan Marx, Adam Deffanbaugh,MaurieLight, Mark Hudson, John Gnuechtel and the other newer autocrossers. And most of all I want to thank my Safety Steward, Greg Lukach. A side note: Barry had a problem with his car, and Greg stepped upand loaned him his car to drive home. Freeing up Greg’s trailer to putBarry’s car on. That left his tire trailer and so I volunteered to bring itback to my house until he needed it. This meant swapping tires fromBarry’s to Greg’s. I saw at least five or six people helping to getthe changes made. We were picked up, packed and even with the extra work to get Barryhomeward bound we were able to be seated in the restaurant by 5:00. Imust say I enjoyed every minute of this weekend’s event.

more fun than I did. There was some reallygood completion. And one of the things I likebest about this group of drivers. We had sev-eral drivers with problems, from oil pressureto suspension issues and every one of them gotto drive because of other unselfish people thatcame to the rescue and let those with issuesco-drive.
I do not have any experience with other re-gions or clubs, but this one really hits the spotwhen it comes to, well I'll just call it family, always willing to help out fellow competitors.
Thanks again and I am looking forward to see-ing all of you next year.

Four Counties RallyThe Four Counties Rally held on August 8th was run primarily as aMonte Carlo rally with one Time-Speed-Distance leg in the middle to"spread" the scores out a bit. The rally ran around the area where thefour counties of Champaign, Douglas, Vermilion and Edgar meet. Atleast a third of the rally on gravel roads. Nine cars showed up, threerunning Navigational class, four Seat-of-the-Pants and two Novice.
The got the rally of to a dusty start. After a long ODO leg just on theedge of Champaign County on the Old State Road. After that it ransouth paralleling the Champaign/Vermilion county line on mostly gravelroads. Our second novice team was called away following the ODO.
This rally was featured as Monte Carlo style event. That is where the
rallymaster provides you with the mileage and the ideal arrival timefor each checkpoint. The rally teams can calculate the average speedneeded to cover the course using the ideal arrival time but it may haveto be adjusted as appropriate to safely navigate the course to arrive.
The third leg of this rally was the TSD leg with intentional traps, onlythe remaining novice team was caught in the second trap. Therallymaster wishes to apologies for neglecting to remove the no-traplanguage from the generals. Next the rally ran on down to Newmanand at one point down a gravel road that could only be described likedriving on ball bearings. Upon leaving Newman the ralliest started along march towards Philo. Unfortunately, the instruction indicatingthe end of the march was incorrect forcing the 6th leg to be thrown.

On 27 Sep 2008, Brian and Sandy Grable hosted their first rally aptly named "Tilting at Wind-mills." The 97 mile rally started in Gibson City and although went through Ford and Champaigncounties, the majority of it ran through McLean county. It featured some scenic country roadsthat allowed everyone to marvel at the enormous wind turbines that festoon the farmland be-tween Gibson City and Bloomington.
There was a 30 minute break at Moraine View State Park where everyone was allowed to rest, have a snack and stretch their legs a bit.
It was a fairly straightforward rally although there was perhaps a trick or two. One of the hosts'favorite was on the last leg when the rallymaster asked the rallyist to turn right onto 200N.Unknown to the rallyist, there were 2 roads marked 200 in a row: the first was 200E and the 2ndwhich was less than 100 feet down the road marked 200N. The route also had many roadsleading to windmills which could have been mistaken for real roads, although the distinctionseemed clear to us. The rally was mileaged with our '96 Explorer with oversized tires. Wefigured to share the fun of running a rally with an odometer that reads ~7% shy of reality. Also, our insincere apologies for the ninja CAST changes and stealth checkpoint locations. Overall, everyone had a good time and we met up at Monical's in Gibson City for awards, pizza andbeverages.
We had a great turnout for our first rally with 7 cars enrolled. Congratulations to the winnersand thanks to everyone who showed up and participated and made our first rally a success! The participants in attendance were as follows along with their scores:

out. Gary Patrick of Saturn of Champaign also brought a Sky toautocross, demonstrating the car's abilities on the autocross course. Thanks also go to Saturn of Champaign for providing the trophy t-shirts for the weekend.
For the most part, Sunday ran smoothly. There was, unfortunatey, oneincident that happened as the event drew to a close. One driver cookedit too hard through a set of offset gates and spun his car backward intoa curb. With the help of the corner workers, the disabled vehicle wasmoved off the course, and Gary Patrick trucked the car and the driverback home.
On Monday, the course was run backwards, and changes were made to
the course to freshen it up and shorten it slightly. I also swapped thelocations of the pits and the grid so that the grid would be the lot adja-cent to the course. Over forty drivers showed up for competition.
There were no on-course incidents. The event ran smoothly, allowingme to give some rides to my parents who showed up that day! I'm notquite sure that they enjoyed my driving, but at the very least they nowunderstand why I have four sets of wheels and tires sitting in my side ofthe garage.
To conclude, I would like to thank Jon Ross of Parkland for making itpossible to autocross on the B lots over Labor Day weekend. And Iwould like to thank all of the drivers who showed up. The event wasincredibly successful, and the scholarship fund got a huge boost!

On Sunday, Nov. 9, 5 hearty rally crews ran the 3rd annual "Fall Foli-age Tour" rally. We were worried that we might not have enough cars,as Emanuel Martin and Jerry White were going to work checkpoints, but we decided to have Emanuel run with Bob Townsend, who didn'thave a partner, so we got 5 cars to run. Jerry worked the checkpoints.
I sent the rally northwest on beautiful roads to Il 47 north of Mahometand had a checkpoint on an oil and chip road where the checkpointcrew could see the ralliests stay on a road by number and not enter thecheckpoint. Then they went through Lotus -- an obscure and unlabeledtown on the western end of Champaign county and on north of Belflowerwhere they encountered the first march., where each left or right changedthe CAST. There was a checkpoint after a few turns and then theycontinued on a DIY leg to Farmer city, where the break was held at theHuck's mini-mart. Quality food, quality gas, quality rally stop!
The rally restarted north of Farmer City and soon they were marchingagain until they ended up at another checkpoint north of Centerville. After that they went through Galesville and Lodge before a long leg toa phantom checkpoint just north of Monticello. I wanted to take two ofmy favorite roads -- the road from Galesville to Lodge and the Lodgebypass, but they were too rough, so the ralliests didn't get to see thosefun roads! After the phantom checkpoint the ralliests drove around thearea towards route 10, then around the Centerville area, which is al-ways a grand time, returning to the same checkpoint as before, nearCenterville. Unfortunately, when I made a change on those previouslegs, I made a mileage error somewhere, so I had to throw those twolegs. I also found a mileage error in the first leg after the break, but wasable to go back and remileage it while the ralliests were wasting theirtime driving towards Monticello. Black Corvettes are pretty fast to getto place to record mileagesQ
But the next leg tookthem around theCenterville area againuntil they got to the fi-nal checkpoint south ofIl route 10 on an exten-sion of route 47 by theold interurban tracks. Afinal DIY leg broughtthem into the endingplace at Monical's,where we had a greattime, as always!I think everyone en-

joyed the rally. I enjoyed putting it on. Once again I enjoyed somelittle non-course following tricks -- marches with variable CASTsand always casting down to 30 on gravel roads (but only if you can'tsee the end of the gravel) makes for thinking on the part of the navi-gator and driver. Everyone did a splendid job!
Thanks to Jerry White for cold running the rally and manning thecheckpoints. I have a reputation (well deserved) of getting very ner-vous running a checkpoint, so Jerry's efforts were certainly appreci-ated, as well as his cold run help. A "sorry" to Emanuel Martin, whovolunteered to work checkpoints, but was needed to hold the rally. Ihope Jerry's rally will give you a chance to earn your work credit foryear-end rally points.

Tour De Witt – Sept 7, 2008September Championship Rally
For the September Championship Rally I de-vised a trip to Clinton Lake. This included sev-eral legs to showcase some of the nicer roadsthat I’ve found in my years working in the area.Five teams signed up for the tour.
We started in the usual location, County Mar-ket in Champaign. From there, the ODO legended near Seymour. Then we headed towardthe lake through a couple different counties. One of the directions included a Siren as a land-mark. This was explained at the Driver’s meet-
ing as either a Greek Sea Nymph who luressailors towards the rocks or a loud device thatwarns people of impending disaster. Somehow, both of these possibilities seemed appropriatefor this rally. Entrants were told to turn atwhichever they saw first.
Unfortunately, leg 2 got our first entrants offcourse. AJ and Aaron took a wrong turn, or,more probably, didn’t take a turn. I also be-lieve that AJ’s car was running on autopilot atthe time, as they ended up near his currenthome (Farmer City, for those of you stickingpins in a map to follow along). Through themagic of cell phone technology, we were ableto recapture them and reinsert them into therally, albeit a couple legs later.
Leg 3 was looking good, as the first car camein just a few seconds off. But that was it, for awhile. More cell phone magic recaptured allthree SOP cars, who had each found a differ-ent way to go off course. We were still waitingfor the Farmer City crew to show up. All fivecars eventually made it to this checkpoint. Thethree SOP cars all maxed out the leg, whichnegated it for class competition, but took themall out of the running for low score of the day.
Leg 4 included some of the longest stretcheswithout crossing off instructions (i.e. using theMain Road Rule), which made some folks ner-vous. It ended at the Boondock’s Grill, on theshore of Clinton Lake, for a short break.
After the break, leg 5 skirted the southern edgeof the lake, past the Marina, ending at the samecheckpoint as legs 2 & 3. Leg 6 ran past FarmerCity. An important note here for anyrallymasters considering this area for possiblefuture routes: you probably ought to steer clearof the town of Harris for a few years, at least. But enough about that.
Leg 6 ended within a mile or so of the ODOleg endpoint. The last leg was a DIY which Iscrewed up right off the bat, specifying a start-ing point which didn’t exist. I got lucky though,as the entrants were flexible enough to recog-nize it and account for it.
Five very understanding, observant and astuteteams combined to make my rally a success. They were able to overcome all of my mistakes, and a couple of their own, to get to the end.Nobody protested, we all had a great time, sawsome beautiful scenery and had nice weather.

The rally of July 4 was designed as a social event. The idea was to have a relaxed no tricks rallywith a nice lunch for the mid-rally break. Afterwards we would continue the same relaxedapproach to finish the rally at Monical's in Champaign to award trophies. The only problemwas someone who will go un-named forgot to bring the trophies. It was just as well they wereforgotten as I made a small calculation error on the last leg that reversed to positions of thesecond and third place car in SOP. For most everyone else it reduced their scores.
Our mid-rally break was at the Tuscany Steak and Pasta House in Tuscola, Illinois located onroute 36. We were seated in a separate room which was un-expected but welcomed. Everyoneseemed to enjoy the break and their meals. The food was good and prices were reasonable. Wecontinued the same pace on the way back and finished up in the mid afternoon which gaveeveryone time to go to any of the July 4th celebrations planned for the evening.
I did not hear any complaints so I will do some scouting for a different restaurant for next year.I am open to suggestions from anyone who has had good experiences with some of the otherrestaurants within fifty or sixty miles.

Next up was a short lunch break. Checkpoint #5 wasat the site of the battle of Tippecanoe in 1811 as youall heard of Tippecanoe and Tyler too. By this time itwas time to head west toward home. WhitewashAs I reported in Whitewash in the lastAuspuff the Champaign County Sports CarClub has enjoyed all of the expected ben-efits of insuring our autocrosses through ourown insurance policy for 2008. The main
ones being that we’ve been able to hold the line on autocross entry feesand that more club members have gotten the chance to be event chairs, safety stewards, etc. In addition, as we had hoped, our attendancehasn’t suffered any and our treasury has grown faster than ever. Fastenough that as of December 1st we already have our insurance coveragefor the 2009 autocross season in place. This has allowed us to provideour proof of insurance paperwork to Rantoul already so they have lockedin our 2009 Rantoul Aviation Center (RAC) event dates which are else-where in this Auspuff and on our website.
Not only that but we’ve built up enough funds that we’ve purchased awalk-in delivery van (aka a bread truck in this case) to use to store allof our autocross equipment and to haul it to events. We also plan onusing the van as the timing vehicle and perhaps will eventually evenuse it as the registration vehicle. In addition we’ve also decided to buya Honda generator to help power all of the electrical equipment that weuse at autocrosses. Emanuel Martin will be in charge of maintainingthe van and the Autocross Committee will come up with ideas andmake recommendations as to what modifications to make to the van toimprove its usability and versatility.
Now that the 2008 season is over it is also time to be thinking aboutpossible changes in our rules and procedures for next year. Ideas of allkinds are much appreciated at this time of year so please contact Den-nis Miller or one of the other members of the Autocross Committeewith your autocross suggestions. Let the Grable’s know if you haveideas about the club’s rally program. Talk to Russ Bedford if you haveany ideas about the club’s Championship Points rules. While you’re atit also please let me know if you are interested in serving on a commit-tee for next year. The annual addition of new faces to the committees is
the magic that has kept the club going for over fifty years. Elsewherein this Auspuff is a list of the 2009 officers and board members etc. asdetermined so far.
A few of areas we’re especially interested in getting additional helpwith are membership and publicity, our social activities and the club’selectronic endeavors. While the first two could be to serve in part or infull as a the Membership and Publicity Chair or Social Chair respec-tively, the latter would be in addition to the current folks that are work-ing with the club’s website, online systems and database. The latterwill also probably be more to serve as backups when the principal folksare busy with other life duties instead of as developers or principalswith regard to those endeavors but you never know.
On another subject here’s a quick report on CCSCC’s showing at thePress on Regardless rally on September 5, 6 & 7 in Michigan. JonFlora and Charles Hanson finished 3rd in the Equipped class and 7th
overall with 257 points and Jim White and Jerry White finished 4th inthe Limited class and 9th overall with 698 points. Jon and Charles’didn’t max (200) any legs but did get stuck in the sand in one place.Fortunately the sweep vehicle was able to pull them out. Jim and Jerrymaxed two legs, one due to getting off course and one due to a majorcalculation problem. They were very fortunate in that the sweep ve-hicle got off course at the same place they did and they were able torecover in time to stay ahead of it. The rally was run mostly in the darkand was over 500 miles long with 75 percent of the roads being un-paved. There were 50 counted controls and the Equipped class car thatwon had an overall score of 51. There were 4 cars in the equippedclass, 6 in the Limited class and 17 overall.
