CDM Smith and Water for People

Water For People is an international humanitarian organisation, dedicated to

helping educate, guide, and connect people with the necessary human and financial

resources to establish sustainable water systems. Since 2005, CDM Smith has

conducted an annual Water For People workplace giving campaign to raise funds and

increase awareness about the lack of safe drinking water, adequate sanitation, and

good hygiene practices in many parts of the world. In 2011, as a Universal Sponsor,

Modelling the Injection of Treated Sewage Effluent, Western

Australia - In this project for the

Town of Cambridge (west of Perth),

our groundwater modelling specialists

were subcontracted to model the

proposed injection of treated sewage

effluent via infiltration trenches

along the downstream boundary of

a wetland. CDM Smith’s experience

in groundwater modelling and lake-

aquifer interaction are unique and

provide a valuable technical asset to

our public clients.

Moreton Bay Tidal Works Approvals, South East Queensland- CDM Smith has worked

with Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) on a range of tidal work projects. CDM

Smith undertook ecological, hydrological, and geotechnical assessments, and

provided statutory advice for the repair of breaches to a wall protecting a freshwater

ecosystem on Bribie Island. CDM Smith was also commissioned to prepare the approval

documentation and the supporting environmental impact assessment for a new

seawall construction on the Pine River north of Brisbane.

Charleville Flood Mitigation and Emergency Management System, South Central Queensland - Following years of devastating floods, CDM Smith was

engaged by Murweh Shire Council to manage the construction of a diversion and

levee system to protect the town from flooding. As a result of our close relationship

with the Council, CDM Smith was also commissioned to develop and implement an

Emergency Management System (EMS) for the Warrego Catchment

Integrated SolutionsEnvironmental Management Systems (EMS) and AuditingCDM Smith undertakes EMS gap analyses and preparation of complete management systems in

accordance with ISO 1400 and ISO 3100. In addition, CDM Smith prepares environmental audits as a

management tool for environmental quality assessments, compliance checks, management system

evaluations, waste management activities and investigations of potentially contaminated sites. Our team

of RABQSA certified environmental auditors are experienced in delivering a range of compliance auditing

assessments, including the review of operations against environmental permits conditions and applicable

environmental regulations as well as EMSs.

Environmental Management Plans (EMPs)EMPs outline an action strategy and establish a due diligence system to ensure environmental regulations

are being adhered to for our clients. We have produced EMPs for a range of public and private clients and

projects including energy infrastructure and waste management providers. Our plans are designed to

ensure compliance with all Local, State and Commonwealth legislation.

Environmental Assessments and ApprovalsWe have considerable experience in the management of all necessary aspects of the planning, assessments

and approvals process, from project inception to submission of planning applications and negotiation with

regulators, then finally to implementation of conditions. Our experience includes green and brownfield

developments for residential, waste, resource, power, rail and road transport and port proponents.

Pest and Weed Management

Strategies, North Queensland-

CDM Smith staff have undertaken a

range of pest and weed management

studies for Councils throughout North

Queensland. This required coordination

with university resources and involved

preparation of management plans for

the implementation of management

measures. As part of this work, CDM

Smith staff prepared Disaster Pest

Management Plans and Strategies for

Johnson Shire Council post Cyclone

Yasi. The project involved assessment

of key damage areas and development

of immediate control and mitigation

strategies following the cyclone.

Hastings Landfill Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA), Victoria - Mornington

Peninsula Shire Council commissioned CDM Smith to undertake an ERA of a former

municipal landfill which comprised a foreshore reserve. CDM Smith successfully

undertook works which led to an assessment of lechate impacts on off-shore

communities and an understanding of the magnitude of those impacts. Field work

consisted of the assessment and recording of the benthic macro-invertebrate (BMI)

and related habitats.

Integrated SolutionsProject Management The CDM Smith team can provide a comprehensive project management service to our Local Government

clients throughout Australia. Our wide-ranging, specialist experience means our highly skilled staff can

plan the most effective strategy from inception to production phases, in environments that demand

comprehensive understanding and experience.

EngineeringCDM Smith provides a range of water and civil engineering services to Local Government clients throughout

Australia. This includes detailed water balance modelling, water sourcing and yield analysis, design of

water treatment plants, extensive expertise in dam, levee and impoundment design, pipelines and pump

station design and transport and site infrastructure design. CDM Smith has experience and technology for

treatability studies, refinery wastewater, produced water, source segregation / minimisation, water reuse;

and an extensive range of advanced treatment technologies.

Emergency Management and Flood MitigationCDM Smith’s water specialists have worked on a variety of hydrology and catchment management projects

both in Australia and around the world. We have the expertise to conduct hydrologic and hydraulic

investigations for floodplain management, water quality assessments, and preparation of catchment related

management plans. In addition to the industry standard software, CDM Smith has developed state of the art

stormwater model in-house that allows us to solve even the most complex water engineering problems.

St George Levee Project, Queensland-

Balonne Shire Council engaged CDM Smith to design and subsequently manage

the construction of a levee system to mitigate the impacts of flooding in the

Balonne River. By the end of June 2013, the design of Stage 1 of the levee system

was been completed, with the construction about to commence. The detail design

of Stage 2 is being finalised.

Site Remediation & Validation, Leichardt, New South Wales -

Leichhardt Municipal Council engaged CDM Smith to provide remediation design,

and remediation of soil and buildings for redevelopment of the site for use as

a nursery. Historically the site had been used for a variety of manufacturing

purposes. The change of use of the site to a more sensitive use involved approval

by an accredited Site Auditor. After remediation, CDM Smith validated that the

site had been remediated to a level acceptable for the sensitive use, which was

signed off by the Site Auditor and approved for development.

Integrated SolutionsHydrogeology CDM Smith has extensive experience working on Groundwater Impact Assessments, assessing

groundwater contamination and remediation requirements and groundwater modelling. We have

extensive groundwater experience relating to oil and gas, linear infrastructure and large scale

development projects throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Erosion and Sediment Control We offer a team of Certified Professional Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) specialists who thoroughly

and efficiently manage ESC throughout the entire project lifecycle. We work with Project Managers/

Directors to design Certified ESC Plans that can be implemented on-site in accordance with the

International Erosion Control Association (IECA) Guidelines (2008).

Geology, Soils and Contaminated LandOur team regularly undertake contaminated land site assessments, remediation and management. We

offer a broad range of services for contaminated land including, but not limited to Stage 1/Phase 1 ESA,

Detailed or Stage 2/Phase 2 ESA and Remediation and Validation.

Our team has a strong background in the project management and supervision of contaminated site

remediation projects and can assist our clients to assess feasibility of options and implement the most cost

effective approach to site remediation and management.

Perry Park Site, Alexandria,

New South Wales - CDM Smith

was engaged by City of Sydney to

undertake a thorough contamination

investigation of Perry Park prior to

redevelopment works. The Site was

used for domestic waste landfill until

1950.

Phase 2 ESA, Confidential Site,

Melbourne, Victoria - CDM Smith

is currently engaged by Department

of Sustainability, Environment,

Water, Population and Communities

(SEWPaC) to undertake a Phase 2 ESA

at a commercial/industrial property,

with a portion of the site leased by The

Department.

CDM Smith has completed both

targeted and grid based soil sampling

campaigns, as well as drilling and

installation of additional groundwater

monitoring wells to supplement the

existing groundwater monitoring

network.

Groundwater & Soil Vapour UPSS Investigation,

Tamworth, New South Wales - CDM Smith recently undertook a hydrological

and soil vapour assessment of an underground petroleum storage system (UPSS)

and associated requirements for Tamworth Regional Council (TRC). This included

providing a service for required notification to the NSW Environmental Protection

Authority (EPA) at one of the TRC depots, which followed a program of UPSS

removals and remediation at various depot sites within the region. This has

enabled TRC to meet the requirements of UPSS regulations and the NSW EPA.

Development of a Marine Fish Habitat Offset Strategy, Moreton Bay,

Queensland - In late 2012, CDM Smith worked closely with Moreton Bay

Regional Council and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF)

to develop an offsets strategy, including acknowledgement of retrospective

onground rehabilitation activities. The Project included assessing the proposed

offset area against DAFF’s offset calculator. Previous rehabilitation and protective

works undertaken by the client were able to be incorporated into the offset

strategy, and DAFF approved the establishment of an offset credit.

Integrated SolutionsWaste Management and Landfill DesignCDM Smith provides planning and design services for all aspects of waste management projects.

This includes conceptual and final designs of municipal solid waste landfills. We have designed

and specified alternative liner systems with lechate collection/leak detection and methane control

for new and expanding landfills. Our multidisciplinary team of civil, structural, geotechnical and

environmental engineers and planners allow us to cater for complete design requirements at waste

management facilities.

Ecology (Flora & Fauna, Terrestrial & Aquatic)CDM Smith has a team of highly qualified fauna and flora ecologists that have significant experience

across urban and regional systems. They apply their skills both to inform larger environmental impact

assessments, and to provide specialised assessments, information and reports for clients.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Spatial AnalysisWe apply cutting edge solutions to enable the processing and storage of large amounts of

Regional Fisheries Permitting

Strategy, South East Queensland -

CDM Smith was engaged by Moreton

Bay Regional Council (MBRC) to

undertake a preliminary review of

projects with the potential to be

carried out as part of their 2010/2011

capital works program and likely

to require approval for matters

assessed under the Queensland

Fisheries Act 1994. The review was

undertaken to facilitate consultation

with the Queensland Department

of Agriculture, Fisheries and

Forestry (DAFF) to allow potential

policy conflicts to be identified and

discussed prior to the development

application stage.

Kobble Creek/Pringles Road Stabilisation Project, South East Queensland -

CDM Smith recently undertook a review of environmental effects for the Kobble

Creek/Pringles Road Stabilisation Project for Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC).

The Project included field and desktop assessments of potential environmental

impacts and detailed project constraint analysis.
