Ideas from our (NF) teachers Preparation •Know the children •Have aims/plan for the session/week/season •Be flexible ( respond to the mood of the class/session) if they are giddy keep it simple and busy Progression •To progress in a skill/tactic, pitch it so that the children repeatedly succeed but it gets more difficult. This idea demands lots of thought by the teacher coach. Especially to keep it them energetically involved. •Keep a single activity short e.g. change two minutes •Progress is personal ( this is the ultimate coaching achievement to progress each young player) are we up to this? Praise and correction •Make sure they know what was good /not good ( ask and LISTEN) (open questions) •Be calm and clear •Be concise (< 5 seconds) no lectures •Giving jobs is a reward for younger children, they demand their turn, if it’s rotated, and not getting it is a correction. •Be aware of children who don’t respond to praise or correction and find a way ( it’s our job to do this) •Get in touch with the parents with good news not just issues.
