The Highland Stone® 3-inch/6-inchCombination multi height retaining wall system combines earthen tones, rich textures and varied contours to make it a reliable alternativeto natural stone walls.

Note: Colors are shown as accurately as possible in brochures & samples,

but due to the nature of the product, regional color differences, and

variables in print reproduction, colors may not match exactly.

BASIC INSTALLATION – SEE ANCHOR™ SEQUENT™ PATTERN ON BACK

1. Stake Out the Wall’s Placement: Excavate for the leveling pad to the linesand grades shown on the approved plans and excavate enough soilbehind the wall for the reinforcement material. The trench for the levelingpad should be a minimum of 24 inches wide and 6 inches deep.

2. Leveling Pad: An aggregate leveling pad is made of a good compactiblebase material of 3/4 inch minus with fines. The pad must extend 6 inchesin front and behind the first course of stone and be at least 6 inches deep.Compact the aggregate and make sure it is level.

3. Base Course: Run a string line along the back of the stone to align the wallunits. Use 6 inch height only stones in the lowest course in the elevationof the wall. Remove the rear lip of the stone so that the stone will lie flaton the leveling pad. Place the stones side by side, flush against eachother, and in full contact with the leveling pad. Level front to back and sideto side. Check the stones for proper alignment.

4. Next Lift Construction: Clean any debris off the top of the stones. Placethe second course of stones, on the base course while maintainingstaggered bond, and push each stone as far as possible to ensure thecorrect setback. Backfill with 12 inches of drainage aggregate directlybehind the stone and fill in soil behind the aggregate. Fill all voidsbehind and between concrete wall units with drainage aggregate.Compact the backfill before the next course is laid. Avoid driving heavyequipment near the wall. Hand-operated equipment should be usedwithin 4 feet of the wall units, or half of the wall height.

5. Drainage Design: Place the drain tile as low as possible behind the wallso water drains down and away from the wall into a storm drain, or to anarea lower than the wall.

6. Compaction: Shovel the in-fill soil behind the drainage aggregate andcompact the in-fill with a compacting device. Make sure the aggregate islevel with or slightly below the top of the laid course.

7. Reinforcement: Check your wall construction plan for which courseswill need reinforcement grid. Measure and cut the reinforcement grid tothe design length in the plans. The reinforcement grid has a designstrength direction, which must be laid perpendicular to the wall. Placethe front edge of the material on the course, as per wall plan, 2 inchesfrom the face of the stone. Apply the next course of stones to secure itin place. Pull the reinforcement taut and pin the back edge in place withstakes. Add drainage aggregate behind the stones, then add the in-fillsoil and compact it. Place the front edge of the reinforcement on top ofthe stone, making sure it is within 2 inches of the face of the stone. Aminimum of 6 inches of backfill is required prior to operating vehicleson the reinforcement.

8. Finish Grade and Surface Drainage: Protect the wall with a finished gradeat the top and bottom. To ensure proper water drainage away from thewall, grade crest of wall to accommodate positive drainage.

Installation Guidelines

Install the base course using best practices. The wall is built with a series of panels in a repeating installation pattern.Follow these steps to build panels.

Sequent™ Installation PatternCombine the Highland Stone® 3-inch and 6-inch wall systems to construct a multiple-height wall with the easy-to-use Sequent™ panelinstallation pattern. This panel approach breaks up the horizontal lines of a typical single-height product. The repeating Sequent™

installation pattern is easy for contractors to install on a large scale in order to create a random, textured look.

Panel Installation Pattern

This installation pattern uses an equal number of units of each face size to make a panel.

6" x 12" 6" x 18" 6" x 6"

1. Start by using all three units of 6-inch product.

2. Next, use all three units of the 3-inch product and stack them on the first three units, staggering the bond. This completes panel one. (See orange-colored area in Installation Pattern.)

3. Working along the wall, next use all three units of the alternate-sized product.

5. Backfill, compact and install grid or structural backfill, if needed.

4. Use alternate product and stack units on the course described in step 3, staggering the bond. This completes the second panel. (See brown-colored area in Installation Pattern). Repeat panel installations across the base course.

6. Start the next set of panels by staggering the first unit 18 inches to the right or left of lowerpanels and repeat step 1.

Continue to install panels to complete the wall.

Estimating Information

1) Determine the square footage of exposed wall.a) Each panel covers 2.25 sq. ft. Divide the square footage of exposed wall by 2.25 to determine the number of panels.b) Each pallet of Highland Stone® 6-inch Combo can complete 20 panels. Divide the number of panels by 20 (rounding up) to

determine the number of Highland Stone® 6-inch Combo pallets required.c) Each pallet of Highland Stone® 3-inch Combo can complete 96 panels. Divide the number of panels by 96 (rounding up) to determine

the number of Highland Stone® 3-inch Combo pallets required.2) Determine the linear footage of base course, and divide by the appropriate factor below to calculate the amount of material required.

a) Highland Stone® 6 inch Combo = 60 linear feet per pallet.b) 18-inch-only blocks: 1.5 linear feet per stone.

3) Add the exposed wall and base course requirements. Don’t forget the caps!
