Hello Central California Psychiatrists, this will mark my first (and highly overdue) submission as Editor of the CCPS newsletter. As we start a new and change filled year I feel it is time to enlist your help. What do you want to hear about in your district branch newsletter? What topics are on your mind in this changing climate of medicine and mental health? It is also a plea to submit your articles and ideas for publication. To paraphrase a former supervisor we owe it to ourselves and to our profession to write and share our ideas lest we become stagnant. Speaking of revitalization, on the horizon is our annual CME event at the majestic Intercontinental Hotel in Monterey, California March 21 st – 23 rd . We have an excellent line up planned, including a segment on the new DSM V. What better way to spend the weekend than improving your knowledge of psychiatry with plenty of down time to enjoy the beauty of the California coastline (did I mention the full service spa and Monterey Bay Aquarium within walking distance of the hotel?) I hope to see you there! Speaking of revitalization, on the horizon is our annual CME event at the majestic Intercontinental

on the new DSM V. What better way to spend the weekend than improving your knowledge of psychiatry

In the changing health care environment, one clear trend is greater integration of primary care
and behavioral health care. APA has compiled extensive resources to help psychiatrists
understand and stay abreast of the issues. Go here to see the latest research, news, analysis,
policy, collaborative care models, and more, including short videos from leaders in the field and
a Toolkit of practice resources.
APA Announces Medicare Reimbursement Victory on Psychiatry Work Values
The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has accepted work values for a number
of psychiatric codes (90791/92 and the 908XX codes) that will result in increased Medicare
payment for psychiatrists using those codes. The work values, which are recommended by the
AMA’s Relative Value Update Committee, are part of a complex payment formula that includes
practice expense and other variables to derive a fee for every code used by physicians. Go here

North Carolina DB Helps Develop Tool Kit to Help Physicians Thrive in ACOs
The North Carolina Psychiatric Association and more than 40 other state and county medical
specialty societies has developed the “Physician’s Accountable Care Tool Kit,” which includes a
section specifically for psychiatrists. Psychiatrists have the skills and experience that position
them for success in ACOs, and it is vital for them to step up with like-minded physicians to lead
in what can be a career-changing transformation. To read the article, click here.

Dear APA Member,
We are writing to let you know that draft APA practice guidelines on the psychiatric evaluation of adults are now available for review by all APA members. Downloadable PDF versions of the drafts are available on the APA website at www.psychiatry.org/practice/clinical-practice-guidelines/review-draft-guidelines. The deadline to comment is February 5
preferred. Instructions for commenting are provided on the page linked above. The guidelines address the following topics, in the context of an initial psychiatric evaluation: assessment of suicide risk, assessment of risk of aggressive behaviors, cultural assessment, assessment of substance use, review of psychiatric symptoms and treatment history, assessment of medical health, involving the patient in treatment decision-making, documentation, and use of quantitative measures. Thank you in advance for facilitating review of these guidelines by members of your District Branch, either by forwarding this message or by making a personalized announcement. After this general review is completed, the guidelines will be submitted to the APA Assembly and Board of Trustees for final approval and publication. For Diplomates Certified or Recertified in 2012 or Later Continuous Pathway to Lifelong Learning Program (CP-MOC) * Read Announcement to Diplomates Letter about the new program. * Download CP-MOC FAQ. * Download Continuous Certification Approach. Beginning in 2012, diplomates will enter the Continuous Pathway to Lifelong Learning. Diplomates prior to 2012 may elect to participate. Instead of paying a single fee at the time of the MOC exam, you will pay an annual fee that covers participation in the ABPN Physician Folio and the “cognitive examination” (AKA recertification exam) at the end of the 10 year period (the annual fee does not cover any modules). You will open an “ABPN Physician Folio” on the ABPN website where you will log your activities and keep track of your status and progress in MOC. There will be 3 stages, with 3 years/stage. Passing subspecialty board certification can take the place of the requirements for one stage beginning 2012. CME, SA, and PIP activities can count towards multiple certificates if the diplomate has multiple ABPN certifications. (Other specialty boards may have different rules governing “double dipping,” consult your other Board’s MOC to be sure.) Diplomates in child and adolescent psychiatry do not need to maintain certification in general psychiatry to maintain certification in child, but all other subspecialties must maintain their general psychiatry certification to remain eligible for their subspecialty certification. There will be 4 components:
Professional standing (maintenance of an unrestricted license, continuously)
Self-assessment and CME * (avg. 8 hours of CME/year/stage involving SA; average 30 hours/year of CME relevant to the specialty of certification)
Performance in practice* (1 practice improvement activity every 3 years, including chart review and patient/peer external review; may take up to 24 months to complete!)
Certification/ recertification
MOC application
MOC exam
CME hours Self- assessment hours
Performance in practice activities
2012+ 2021+ 2022+ 270 (90/stage)
72 (24/stage) 3 (1/stage)
* May only use ABPN-approved SA/PIP products beginning 2014 APA Resources for MOC Please note: All APA CME/MOC credits done through APA’s learning management system transcript will be sent to the ABPN at least quarterly and entered automatically into the individual’s ABPN Physician Folio. If not noted as “self-entered”, APA CME and MOC activities will NOT be audited by ABPN.
