GENERAL INFORMATION

SCHOOL LEAVERSCAO does not apply to our extensive range of courses, POINTS ARE NOTREQUIRED. Students who have passed Leaving Certificate or LeavingCertificate Applied are eligible to apply. Applicants who present with schoolleaving examinations, other than the Leaving Cert, will be assessed based onaccepted equivalent tables.

MATURE STUDENTS The college welcomes applications from mature students. Exemptions are madefrom having formal educational qualifications for mature students.

All students will be interviewed.

It is a short information session between the potential student and courserepresentatives. Interviews for PLC places will be held in late May, Late Augustand Early September.

Places on courses are offered on the following basis 1. Places on courses are allocated to students on the basis of interview, priorexperiences and/or exam results.

2. Availability of places on particular courses in the year of application. Waitinglists may apply if some programmes are oversubscribed.

3. Adequate enrolment to run the course/programme

4. Acceptance of offer and payment of fees.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING The national objective of moving towards a ‘Lifelong Learning Society’ enableslearners to take up learning opportunities at chosen stages throughout their lives.

PRIOR LEARNING ENCOMPASSES 1. Formal learning, which takes place through programmes of study or training,delivered by education or training providers which attract awards.

2. Non-formal learning that takes place alongside the mainstream systems ofeducation and training. It may be assessed but does not normally lead to formalcertification. Examples of non-formal learning are: learning and training activitiesundertaken in the workplace, voluntary sector or trade union and community-based learning.

3. Informal learning that takes place through life and work experience (and issometimes referred to as experiential learning). Often, it is learning that isunintentional and the learner may not recognise at the time of the experiencethat it contributed to his or her knowledge, skills and competences.

Coláiste Chiaráin College of Further Education in conjunction with QQI iscommitted to implementing a RPL Policy to enable access to our programmesfor all students. This involves an evaluation of all students’ learning to date so asto determine their capacity to participate on their chosen course/programme.Please Contact the College for details.

MAINTENANCE GRANT SCHEMEThe Department of Education and Skills provides a means-tested maintenancegrant for learners attending full time further education. Information regardingeligibility and application details is available at www.studentfinance.ie

BACK TO EDUCATION ALLOWANCEThe Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) is a scheme for unemployed people,lone parents and people with disabilities who are getting certain payments fromthe Department of Social Protection.

The allowance can be paid to people who wish to do or take approved second orthird level courses of education. BTEA is not an unemployment payment.Participants get a standard rate of payment which is not means tested. If you aresigning for unemployment credits or submitting medical certificates for illnesscredits, you may apply to take part in the scheme through your Social WelfareOffice.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES SCHEMEThe Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS) is an educationalopportunities scheme for unemployed persons which are funded by theDepartment of Education and Skills with assistance from the European SocialFund. This scheme gives you a second chance to go back to full time educationand training. It allows you to keep your social welfare allowances while attendingyour full time course in the college. All applicants must be 21 years or over toqualify

Who Qualifies for VTOS?Adults over 21 years of age and have been receiving social welfare benefits for atleast 6 months (156 days).

What allowances are payable?If eligible and accepted on the scheme, students continue to get full SocialWelfare Entitlements plus course fees, some lunch and travel expenses may alsobe paid for.

PROGRESSION An award from the College gives an individual many of the skills that are requiredto make a meaningful contribution to the workplace. The educational experiencethe College provides, places many of our graduates on a pathway of learninggoing forward. Learning does not end when the student leaves the college.

HIGHER EDUCATION LINKS SCHEME Coláiste Chiaráin College of Further Education provides programmes ofeducation and training leading to awards at Level 5 Certificate and Level 6Advanced Certificate on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). TheNFQ provides a method to compare educational outcomes ensuring that theyare quality assured and recognised both on a national and international level.Students can be confident that the awards they achieve in this college will providethem with the necessary fundamentals to progress their educational futures.

NATIONAL FRAMEWORK OF QUALIFICATIONS A new national qualification system has been introduced across further educationand training in Ireland, which is known as CAS or the ‘Common Awards System,.By 2014 all FETAC awards will be part of CAS .This facilitates easier recognitionfor your learning.

FETAC is being amalgamated with HETAC, the IUQB and the NQAI to formone integrated agency, Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI). This newagency is responsible for maintaining, developing and promoting the NationalFramework of Qualifications.The National Framework of Qualifications is a system of ten levels, each of whichhas nationally agreed standards setting out what you are expected to know,understand and be able to do following successful completion of a programme.

WORK EXPERIENCEWork experience is an integral part of all our courses. The work placementprovides students with an opportunity to apply newly acquired skills and greatlyenhances their employment prospects

GARDA CLEARANCEColáiste Chiaráin College of Further Education is committed to practices whichsafeguard the welfare of students, young people and vulnerable adults. GardaVetting is conducted on students attending courses where interaction withchildren or vulnerable adults is a feature of the course.

COLLEGE FEESThere are no tuition fees payable to the college by EU nationals; however aregistration charge applies to all students. Please contact the College for relevantcourse details.

An additional €200 government levy applies to all students. You are exempt fromthis fee if you hold 1. A medical card in your own right or dependant on a medical card holder2. Receiving a Back to Education Allowance 3. Receive VTOS4. Receive a Student maintenance grant

FETAC examination fees €50. Additional course fees may apply,

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS We welcome applicants from non EU students particularly diversity that theinternational student brings.

Non EU students must comply with Irish Immigration requirements. A visa fromthe immigration section of the Department of Justice and Equality must besecured, prior to acceptance.

Students whose first language is not English must demonstrate to the Collegethat they have the minimum standard of English required prior to being offereda place on a course. All PLC courses are conducted through English.

Non EU Nationals are charged a tuition fee determined by the Department ofEducation and Skills.

LOCATION Croom is located just 15 minutes from Limerick and is easily accessible from themain Limerick to Cork Road.

TRANSPORT A bus service is provided to and from Limerick City for PLC students subject todemand. There is a small fee for this service

Sports & RecreationCode: 5M5146Duration: 1 year.

Overview:This course is designed to cater for a broad spectrum of sports and leisure relatedactivities. Graduates may seek a career in leisure, personal training, coaching,community and local authority based work and a range of careers in tourism andrelated fields. Practical aspects of the course take place in the University of LimerickSports Arena. Facilities include 50m pool, aerobics studio, large well-equippedgymnasium and four full sized sports halls.

Course content:A menu of modules are offered from the following:

• Sports and Recreation Studies• Sports Anatomy and Physiology• Exercise and Fitness• Nutrition• Occupational First Aid• Work Experience• Pool Lifeguard• Leisure Facility Operations• Communications

Sport Development & Sports CoachingCode: 6M5147Duration: 1 year

OverviewThis is the second year of a two year course designed to prepare students for a career in theleisure industry, sports coaching, or to provide a pathway to further study. The Level 6 Coursein Sports Development examines the disciplines of sports coaching and sport communitydevelopment, applicable to any code and relevant for all major NGBs. This Advanced Certificatecourse involves practical and theoretical sport studies to prepare learners for a career in sportcoaching, sport development, holistic massage and the leisure sector. Throughout the year therewill be opportunities to practice coaching skills, gain national coaching qualifications, examinesports nutrition, explore holistic massage, improve sporting opportunities in your local communityand manage events, while enhancing career and further education opportunities. This innovativecourse provides a multidisciplinary approach to analyzing and improving your role as a sportsdevelopment officer, sports coach and massage therapist.

This course takes place primarily at the Coláiste Chiaráin campus in Croom, however someaspects of the course take place in the University of Limerick Arena where students have accessto an Olympic sized swimming pool, aerobics studio, well-equipped gymnasium and four full sizedsports halls.

Nursing StudiesCode: 5M4349Duration: 1 year

OverviewThis course will be of interest to students who intend to pursue a career in Nursing.Students receive a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of nursing fromessential nursing practices to specialised care. Development of practical skills andpersonal qualities is emphasised to equip students for further studies in nursing.Students will be given an opportunity to observe and participate in direct nursingcare and to participate in nursing care as part of the work Experience module.

OverviewThis course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and attitude toconfidently work in the area of healthcare. The course enables students to work inhospitals, retirement homes, in the community or as home help. This is a mandatorycourse for all Healthcare assistants.

OverviewThis course provides student with fascinating insights into the health, care andwelfare of a wide variety of animals from horses and dogs to birds and fish. Studentsreceive a sound theoretical grounding in Animal Anatomy, Physiology and Biology.Emphasis is placed on ‘hands-on’ practical experience with animals during the workexperience placement, and during fiend trips to veterinary clinics, dog groomingparlours and equine centres. The ‘Start Your Own Business’ module providesinformation about establishing your own business in the rapidly growing Animal CareSector.

OverviewThis course aims to prepare students for further study or careers in the music andmedia industries. It will develop a broad range of knowledge related to the operationof sound equipment for both live and studio environments. Using industry softwareand hardware you will learn how to record and mix your own creative work.
