news How do you begin the restoration of a society that has just come out of a 23 year long struggle to survive a devastating civil war? Not just famine or disease, not just poverty and civil unrest, but a situation so horrific it would take volumes to recount the devastation. While the over-two-decade long insurgency of the Lord’s Resistance Army in Northern Uganda is well documented in print and in film, what is not discussed is the way of life and the emergence of a resilient people in the wake of such horror. Almost immediately after the end of the insurgency, organizations poured into the re- gion to help these once terrorized people begin recovery. Coming alongside Faith Alive Ministries, ChildCare INTERNATIONAL was determined to reach out to the next generation, the children of those affected by the war. Without a different perspective, these children and youth would be subject to the same worldview as their parents. There was little help available during the civil war to give them a chance at a better future and new way of thinking. In 1997, Clayton Odhiambo and his family had to run for their lives to flee an ambush by LRA rebels. Over 600km from their home, Clayton and his family found safety. However, many people in their extended family had been abducted and killed. Others disappeared and were never seen again. Clayton knew it was by God’s grace that he and his family were safe. The impact of this devastating time created a deep burden in Clayton’s heart. While serving God in two local churches and an orphanage, the Lord planted a burning desire & vision for Clayton to reach out and share the saving truth of God’s word with his people. After a cease-fire in 2007, Clayton and his wife Monica moved to Gulu in Northern Uganda. Along with other missionaries, they worked to develop a Christian primary school. The Faith Alive Founda- tion was registered in 2009 and the next year, with courage that could only come from God, Clayton and Monica moved even farther north, back to their home district of Kitgum, Uganda where they started Faith Alive Church. Clayton and Monica found the situation in Kitgum very sad. Many people were living in indescribable, miserable conditions in internally displaced people’s camps and they lacked the word of God. The children were the most affected by this conflict, with many left orphaned, neglected and infected with HIV-AIDS. Knowing they had to do something, Clayton and Monica began Faith Academy in 2011. Due to the great need for more classrooms, land has been acquired and a temporary bamboo structure has been built. This bamboo structure holds four classrooms and has a canvas tarp on one half of the roof. Whenever the rains come, the whole place gets very wet, making it very difficult for the teachers to teach & for the students to learn. Faith Alive is key to the growth and health of the community in Kitgum, Uganda. Not only are the children excelling in school, but others in the community, youth and adults are engaging in various activities such as games, sports, music and bible study — turning away from idleness, gambling and alcoholism. Children attending the Faith Alive Academy are excelling in their studies and are growing spiritually and socially. The surrounding community and the district at large are noticing the difference these Christ-loving, self-disciplined students and teachers are making in their community. Partnering with Faith Alive, our plan is to build sturdy, dependable classrooms for these children. Please help us raise the funds to ensure that Christ will be reflected through education at Faith Academy for generations to come. Help us to make sure that children in Kitgum, Uganda will grow up knowing Christ! RESTORING HOPE — ONE CHILD AT A TIME... children are excelling in their studies & are growing spiritually & socially

newsEarlier this year I received a report that the new school building in Vion, located in a remote

area of NW Haiti, could not be completed. Due to severe drought, there was not enough waterto mix the concrete. Children were having to walk over a mile and a half just to get to the nearestcontaminated water source. Our Haitian team was very discouraged.

Two weeks later, I visited the project and saw all of the materials needed to complete theschool were safely stored in the local church. All that was needed was water; it had not rained inover two months. While there, I felt led to gather the teachers and children to ask God to bringrain to Vion. Not wanting to create a wrong impression of God’s favour, I chose a very young, shylittle girl to lead our prayer. She began slowlyand nervously, and then with tears streamingdown her face she cried out to God in Creole, asking God to bring rain to Vion.

Just a few days after returning home toCanada, I received an email saying that Godhad answered the prayers of the little girl, ithad rained in Vion! The email went on tosay that the school building would soon becompleted and it would be open for thechildren to start attending classes within the week.

This story does not end there. This year, funding has been provided for the construction of a 25,000 gallon cistern that will provide enough safe drinking water, gathered during the rainyseason, to last through an extended dry season. As well, more than 100 children have been registered at the Vion School and God willing, they will soon be sponsored. The children in Vionnow receive what should be the right of all children – that is healthcare, safe drinking water, nutritious meals and an education.
