ForewordCCEA has developed new specifications which comply with criteria for GCSE qualifications. The specimen assessment materials accompanying new specifications are provided to give centres guidance on the structure and character of the planned assessments in advance of the first assessment. It is intended that the specimen assessment materials contained in this booklet will help teachers and students to understand, as fully as possible, the markers’ expectations of candidates’ responses to the types of tasks and questions set at GCSE level. These specimen assessment materials should be used in conjunction with CCEA’s GCSE Digital Technology specification.

Unit 3: Digital Authoring Practice

Scenario

Dan and Mairead are setting up an ICT training company named ‘Solutions’.Their target audience is primary and secondary school students. They aim to offer a number of multimedia and software programming courses, ranging from two to eight weeks in duration. Solutions require the development of the following:

1 Dan and Mairead have requested a multimedia package to advertise Solutions. The package should be aimed at parents and students and should contain detail about Solutions, their staff, available courses and fees. The package should make use of the following features of a multimedia package: templates; hypertext; optimised media types; scripted elements; and accessibility elements.

2 A database booking to record relevant details about students, tutors and courses. The

database is for use within the company and will be used to produce detailed output for tutors and the company owners (in the form of query results and reports) to support the day-to-day operation of the company, bills for parents to be paid in advance of taking the courses. The database should make use of the following database features: tables; a range of validation techniques; forms; complex queries; professional reports; and macros.

This unit requires the practical application of the processes associated with the design, development and testing of digital multimedia systems.

of an interactive solution from the design document. The solution should demonstrate an understanding of accessibility issues.

The multimedia solution should include the use of:• templates (including a form);• hypertext which supports internal and external navigational links;• optimised media types, which should include:

– an original video; – an original animation; and – appropriate sound;

• scripted elements which aid the interactivity of the solution; and• accessibility elements. [13]

(b) Database solution Use the following features of a database application to support the creation of an

interactive solution which meets the user requirements identified in the design stage.

The database solution should include the use of:• tables with appropriate length checks, validation, use of lookup lists and input

masks;• appropriate relationships between tables;• forms for data input;• a menu system for ease of navigation;• complex and simple queries;• reports incorporating the use of grouping, sorting, calculations and headers and

footers where appropriate; and• macros for process automation. [14]

3 Testing the database solution [10 marks]

Create an effective test plan derived from database user requirements which:• is presented in tabular format;• tests all navigational elements, all interactive elements;• utilises appropriate test data;• shows expected output;• identifies errors;• reflects the general robustness of the system for use in evaluation; and• measures the extent to which the user requirements have been met.

Test the solution using the test plan created and document the observed outcomes from

each test.

Unit 5: Digital Development Practice

This unit requires the practical application of the processes associated with the design, development and testing of coded solutions when creating digital systems. The completed project must use one of the following languages: Python, Java or C#.

Scenario

Dan and Mairead are setting up an ICT training company named ‘Solutions’.Their target audience is primary and secondary school students. They aim to offer a number of multimedia and software programming courses, ranging from two to eight weeks in duration.Courses may change over time to respond to customer demand.

Dan and Mairead want a computer program to test the ICT skills of the students at the end of each week.

The program should generate six to ten multiple choice questions for each test. The system should ask for:

• student registration number;• course identification; and• course week number.

INPUTThe six to ten multiple choice questions should be displayed on screen/s. After the student inputs the answer to the question the correct answer and the score should then be displayed on screen.

STORAGEThe tutor wants to keep track of the weekly scores for each student on the course. The maximum class size is five. Store the student’s:

• registration number;• the course identification;• course week number; and• student total weekly score.

OUTPUTWhen the course is completed the tutor outputs a report of the weekly progress of the students on the course.

The tutor needs to output the following:• the weekly score for each student;• the overall grade for the course for each student (A-E); and• the average score of the class.

The program should be user friendly and provide validation and contextual help where appropriate.

Analyse the user requirements in detail.Design, code, test and evaluate a program to meet the above requirements.

General Marking Instructions

IntroductionMark schemes are intended to ensure that the GCSE examinations are marked consistently and fairly. The mark schemes provide markers with an indication of the nature and range of candidates’ responses likely to be worthy of credit. They also set out the criteria which they should apply in allocating marks to candidates’ responses.

Assessment objectivesBelow are the assessment objectives for Digital Technology

Candidates must:

AO1 demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, characteristics, components and functions of digital technology;

AO2 apply knowledge and understanding of digital technology to investigate and analyse problems and propose solutions; and

AO3 design, develop and evaluate solutions to solve problems, making reasoned judgments and presenting conclusions.

Quality of candidates’ responsesIn marking the examination papers, examiners should be looking for a quality of response reflecting the level of maturity which may reasonably be expected of a 16-year-old which is the age at which the majority of candidates sit their GCSE examinations.

Flexibility in markingMark schemes are not intended to be totally prescriptive. No mark scheme can cover all the responses which candidates may produce. In the event of unanticipated answers, examiners are expected to use their professional judgement to assess the validity of answers. If an answer is particularly problematic, then examiners should seek the guidance of the Supervising Examiner.

Positive markingExaminers are encouraged to be positive in their marking, giving appropriate credit for what candidates know, understand and can do rather than penalising candidates for errors or omissions. Examiners should make use of the whole of the available mark range for any particular question and be prepared to award full marks for a response which is as good as might reasonably be expected of a 16-year-old GCSE candidate.

Awarding zero marksMarks should only be awarded for valid responses and no marks should be awarded for an answer which is completely incorrect or inappropriate.

Marking calculationsIn marking answers involving calculations, examiners should apply the ‘own figure rule’ so that candidates are not penalised more than once for a computational error.

81

Types of mark schemesMark schemes for tasks or questions which require candidates to respond in extended written form are marked on the basis of levels of response which take account of the quality of written communication.

Other questions which require only short answers are marked on a point for point basis with marks awarded for each valid piece of information provided.

Levels of responseTasks and questions requiring candidates to respond in extended writing are marked in terms of levels of response. In deciding which level of response to award, examiners should look for the ‘best fit’ bearing in mind that weakness in one area may be compensated for by strength in another. In deciding which mark within a particular level to award to any response, examiners are expected to use their professional judgement. The following guidance is provided to assist examiners.

• Threshold performance: Response which just merits inclusion in the level and should be awarded a mark at or near the bottom of the range.

• Intermediate performance: Response which clearly merits inclusion in the level and should be awarded a mark at or near the middle of the range.

• High performance: Response which fully satisfies the level description and should be awarded a mark at or near the top of the range.

Quality of written communicationQuality of written communication is taken into account in assessing candidates’ responses to all tasks and questions that require them to respond in extended written form. These tasks and questions are marked on the basis of levels of response. The description for each level of response includes reference to the quality of written communication.

For conciseness, quality of written communication is distinguished within levels of response as follows:

Level 1: Quality of written communication is limited.Level 2: Quality of written communication is satisfactory.Level 3: Quality of written communication is good.

In interpreting these level descriptions, examiners should refer to the more detailed guidance provided below:

Level 1 (Limited): The candidate makes only a limited selection and use of an appropriate form and style of writing. The organisation of material may lack clarity and coherence. There is little use of specialist vocabulary. Presentation, spelling, punctuation and grammar may be such that intended meaning is not clear.

Level 2 (Satisfactory): The candidate makes a reasonable selection and use of an appropriate form and style of writing. Relevant material is organised with some clarity and coherence. There is some use of appropriate specialist vocabulary. Presentation, spelling, punctuation and grammar are sufficiently competent to make meaning clear.

Level 3 (Good): The candidate successfully selects and uses the most appropriate form and style of writing. Relevant material is organised with a high degree of clarity and coherence. There is widespread and accurate use of appropriate specialist vocabulary. Presentation, spelling, punctuation and grammar are of a sufficiently high standard to make meaning clear.

1 Design a solution using appropriate tools MarksThe candidate has successfully designed a high quality programming solution, using appropriate design tools, e.g. flowchart, pseudo code etc. to produce a fully decomposed solution. A comprehensive set of data requirements (inputs, processes, outputs, interface and report design) have been developed for the proposed solution. The data requirements show enough detail to enable a fully functioning programme to be developed. Target audience needs have been clearly identified. Full consideration has been given to appropriate help for the user of the system.Validation and error trapping techniques are designed to ensure that the candidate produces a robust program. The use of user feedback to refine the solution based on the issues identified during the design process is evident.

[10]–[13]

The candidate has developed a clear set of data requirements for the proposed solution. The candidate has successfully designed a basic solution, using some design tools (e.g. data flow diagrams, pseudo code etc.) to produce a working solution. A basic set of data requirements (inputs, processes, outputs, interface and report design) have been developed for the proposed solution. The data requirements show enough detail to enable a basic functioning programme to be developed. Target audience needs have been identified. Some evidence of validation is included in the design to ensure that the candidate produces a robust program. Some evidence of design refinement based on the issues identified during the design process are produced.

[5]–[9]

The candidate has designed a limited programming solution. A limited set of data requirements have been developed for the proposed solution. The data requirements show enough detail to enable a partially functioning programme to be developed. Little evidence of validation is included in the design solution.Target audience poorly identified and little or no evidence of design refinement.
