what is a ChantiCleer?Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battle to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

Cliff Ellis is entering his fourth season as the head coach of the Coastal Carolina men’s basketball program. Ellis has been a successful coach throughout his career, amassing a Division I record of 586-378 (.608) and 664-390 (.630) as a head coach overall,
ranking him 32nd in the nation in all-time Division I wins prior to the 2010-11 season and enters the 2010-11 season as the 10th winningest active Division I coach by victories. He is also just one of 10 coaches in NCAA Division I history to post 100 or more wins at three separate schools and has been named conference Coach of the Year six times in his career. Ellis enters his 35th season as a collegiate head coach as he has had tremendous success guiding his team to postseason play. Ellis has guided his squads to eight NCAA Tournaments and 12 National Invitation Tournament bids. Ellis’ teams have advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament three times: once with Clemson in 1989-90 and twice with Auburn (1998-99 and 2002-03). Ellis helped orchestrate one of the greatest seasons in Coastal Carolina basketball history in 2009-10, as the Chan-ticleers won the Big South regular season title with an overall record of 28-7 to set a school record for the most wins in a season, surpassing the previous record of 24 victories set dur-ing the 1999-91 season. Coastal also finished the season with a 15-3 mark inside the Big South to post a school record for conference victories. Ellis went on to be selected as the Big
South Coach of the Year and guided the Chants to a second place finish in the Big South Tournament. Coastal proved to be one of the top defensive teams in the country under Ellis’ tutelage. The Chanticleers ranked first in the nation in three-point field goal defense by limiting opponents to a .275 shooting percentage from beyond the arc. Coastal also stood fifth in the NCAA in field goal percentage defense by hold-ing teams to just 38.2 percent shooting from the field. Three Chanticleers were named All-Big South in 2009-10 under the direction of Ellis. Senior Joseph Harris and junior Chad Gray were both tabbed to the All-Big South first team, while newcomer Kierre Greenwood was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team. Harris ranked eighth in the Big South in scoring with 14.3 points per game and second in the league and 30th in the nation with 9.6 rebounds per game. Gray stood seventh in the conference in scoring with 14.3 points per game, while Greenwood ranked eighth in assists with 3.34 helpers per game. Harris flourished under the direction of Ellis and finished his career as the only player in Big South history with 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 200 steals and 100 blocked shots. In fact, Har-ris ranks first all-time in Big South history in rebounds (1,152) and games played (134), while standing tied for second in field goal percentage (.561). Harris also stands 11th all-time in the Big South in steals (205) and 15th in blocked shots (142). Ellis guided Coastal Carolina in 2008-09 to victories over Conference USA foe East Carolina as well as home wins against UNC Asheville and Winthrop and last-second buzzer-beater vic-tories at High Point and against VMI, who finished second in the Big South. Coastal had an All-Big South First Team selection in Harris, who led the Big South in rebounding and field-goal per-centage. He also had 11 straight double-double’s and was in the top-10 in the nation in rebounding despite standing only 6-5.
Despite a myriad of injuries that affected the Chanticleers in Ellis’ first season, Coastal Carolina won 13 games, including six Big South contests and was competitive in most games night in and night out. The Chanticleers defeated Big South Conference Tournament champion Winthrop 50-49 Jan. 26 and had thrilling buzzer-beating wins over Radford (76-75) Jan. 12 and Charles-ton Southern (85-78 in OT) Feb. 2. Coastal Carolina also had two big wins over High Point, including a heart-pounding 56-55 win Feb. 18. Ellis coached Jack Leasure, who was an All-Big South Second Team selection, an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American and was the Big South Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for all sports. Ellis also guided Anthony Breeze to a Big South All-Freshman selection. Ellis spent 10 years (1994-2004) as the head coach at Au-burn, posting a 186-125 (.598) record. During his time, Ellis led the Tigers to a school record 29-4 mark in 1998-99, including a 14-2 mark in the SEC to win the league title and took the team to the NCAA Championship as a No. 1 seed, eventually advancing to the Sweet 16. He was the 1999 Southeastern Conference and National Coach of the Year by six different organizations, includ-ing the John and Nellie Wooden and Associated Press awards. El-lis also led Auburn to the 2000 NCAA Tournament after a 24-10 record overall, becoming a finalist for National Coach of the Year. He also garnered 1995 SEC Coach of the Year honors in his first year at Auburn after taking the Tigers to a 16-13 record overall, earning a berth in the NIT. Ellis took the Tigers to seven postseason appearances in his nine years. A preseason last-place pick in the SEC, Ellis led the Ti-gers to the 2003 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, losing to eventual National Champion Syracuse 79-78. Auburn had a 22-12 record in 2002-03, 8-8 in the SEC and a runner-up finish in the Western Division. It marked the third-most wins in school history, all three while Ellis was at the helm. Senior Marquis Daniels was a first-
Coastal Carolina Athletic Director Hunter Yurachek and Head Coach Cliff Ellis hoist the Big South Championship trophy prior to the final game of the regular season against VMI. The Chanticleers won the league title with a 15-3 record inside the conference.

team All-SEC selection and the Birmingham News’ SEC Player of the Year and is currently a guard with the Boston Celtics. In the story book 1998-99 season, the Tigers climbed as high as No. 2 in the nation in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls and finished the season No. 4. Auburn won the outright SEC Championship (the school had only won two in the previous 67-year history of the SEC with the other coming in 1960), SEC Western Division Championship and set the state of Alabama record for victories in a season with a 29-4 record. Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum sold out seven times and a record 123,881 fans passed through its doors. The Tigers had never had back-to-back home sellouts in the then 31-year history of the Coliseum prior. In fact, he reached 100 wins at Auburn faster than any other coach in Tiger history, including the legendary Joel Eaves, Auburn’s all-time winningest coach and for whom the Coliseum is named after. In 1999-2000, Auburn was the preseason No. 1 ranked team in the nation by Sports Illustrated and sold out of all 10,500 season tickets for the first time in school history prior to the season. The Tigers spent most of the year in the top 10, had the second longest homecourt winning streak in the nation at 30 games and lead the SEC’s Western Division for 29 straight weeks dating back to 1998-99. The Tigers’ 24 wins in 1999-2000 marked the second most wins in school history and the Tigers’ 50-9 record over the two years was the fourth-best mark in the nation behind Duke, Cincinnati and Stanford. The 53 combined wins are the most wins in back-to-back seasons in school history. Auburn played in the SEC Tournament Championship game for only the third time in school history. Ellis coached at Clemson from 1984-1994, putting together a 177-128 (.580) record in his tenure. While at Clemson, Ellis led the Tigers to the 1990 Atlantic Coast Conference title, the only one in the school’s history, with a 24-8 overall record, a 10-4 ACC mark and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16. For his efforts, he earned ACC and NABC and US Basketball Writers District III Coach of the Year honors. He had previously garnered the ACC and District Coach of the Year awards in 1987 after pacing the Tigers to 25-6 mark, the best in the school his-tory, a runner-up finish in the ACC and a berth in the NCAA Tour-nament. The Tigers had been to postseason play just five times prior to his arrival. He was the first coach in ACC history to guide a school to postseason play in each of his first six years with a league program. The 1989-90 Clemson team continued the tradition of ex-cellence that Ellis began when he took over the program. For
the first time in the school’s 80-year history, the Tigers won the regular-season Atlantic Coast Conference title. Also for the first time, two Tigers were All-ACC first-team selections of the Associ-ated Press/Atlantic Coast Sportswriters in the same year. Ellis became the first Tiger basketball coach to be named conference Coach of the Year twice (1987 and 1990). Later that season, Ellis’ Tigers knocked off ACC foe North Carolina 69-61 and four days later, defeated fifth-ranked Duke 97-93. The Duke victory also gave Clemson its 24th consecutive victory in Littlejohn Coliseum, setting the Clemson record, and at the time, ranked as the fourth best among active home winning streaks nationwide. Included in those 24 wins were 13 victories over ACC teams, five ranked in the AP Top 25, three in the Top 10. In 1986-87, Ellis’ Tigers became the most successful team in Clemson history finishing with a 25-6 record, a No. 13 national ranking and an NCAA Tournament berth. Ellis, who became the first Clemson coach to be named ACC Coach of the Year, was also named NABC District III Coach of the Year by his peers and the state of South Carolina Coach of the Year. The Tigers defeated five USA Today Top 25 teams and they became only the second squad (at that time) in Clemson history to be invited to the Big Dance. Ellis also moved Clemson into the Top 10 in both the AP and UPI polls for the first time in school history. Ellis started his Division I head coaching career at South Ala-bama from 1975-1984, where he developed the program into a nationally-recognized team in his nine years. He had a 171-84 (.671) record, the highest winning percentage in USA history and led the Jaguars to three Sun Belt Conference Championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances, while earning one Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year award. He led the Jaguars to a top-10 national ranking during his tenure. During his time with the Jaguars, he also served as the Athletic Director and was in-ducted into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 for the work he did with the Jaguars’ basketball program. He started his collegiate head coaching career at Cumber-land University, where he also served as Athletic Director from 1973-1975. In his three years, he led Cumberland to a 78-12 (.867) record, including two league championships. Ellis started his career in the high school ranks, coaching at Ocala Vanguard and Niceville High Schools and Ruckel Junior High School in his first four years. Ellis has always had a reputation for recruiting top-notch athletes. Four of his players off the 1980-81 South Alabama team were drafted in the NBA, more than any other school in the nation. The Jaguars then had three more drafted in 1985, all
players Ellis had recruited to the school. He has six first round choices, including 1994 NBA lottery pick Sharone Wright, Terry Catledge, Horace Grant, Elden Campbell, Dale Davis and Mama-dou N’diaye and he has coached a conference player of the year four times. Chris Whitney, a second round pick in the 1993 NBA Draft is another former Clemson Tiger who played for Ellis. In his first year at Auburn, Ellis signed point guard Moochie Norris, who was a second round NBA Draft pick in 1996 and plays for the Houston Rockets. Chris Porter was drafted in the second round by the Golden State Warriors in 2000. Point guard Jamison Brewer was drafted in the second round of the 2001 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers. Prior to coaching at Coastal Carolina, Ellis worked as a tele-vision broadcast analyst, with numerous national and regional games including Big South Conference and Coastal Carolina games, from 2004-2007. Ellis got his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Florida State in 1968 and earned his master’s degree, also in physical education, from Middle Tennessee State in 1972. He has also published three books and two videos on basketball coaching during his career. Ellis is also a musician, author and ostrich farmer. He started in the recording business before coaching and has released many records. In 1991, he released a record called “Loveland” by Cliff Ellis and the EBS All-Star Blues Band. He cut another record, “Cliff Ellis and Friends,” which includes several rock ‘n roll songs and a rendition of “Amazing Grace” dedicated to the late Jim Valvano, a close friend who taught Ellis much about life through his battle with cancer. “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” another song on the compact disc, climbed all the way to No. 13 on the “Beach Music” charts. His most recent CD is People Get Ready in which he collaborated with Grammy winner Marty Rabun (Shenandoah) and former Auburn players. Ellis also has seven publications to his credit. He has published three books - Zone Press Variations for Winning Basketball, The Complete Book of Fast Break Basketball and Cliff Ellis: The Winning Edge, released in the summer of 2000. Ellis is married to the former Carolyn Ratzlaff and they have three children, Chryssa Rutland, Clay and Anna Catherine, and two grandchildren, Hannah Grace and Ellis Rutland.

Don Hogan enters his second season as the associ-ate head coach of the Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball program. Hogan’s arrival in Conway paid immediate divi-dends as he helped lead the Chanticleers to a
school-record 28 wins en route to the Big South regular season title and an appearance in the postseason for the first time since 1993. The Chanticleers also finished with a 15-3 mark inside the Big South to set a new school record for league wins, surpassing the previous record of 13 set during the 1990-91 season. Hogan also experienced success on an individual level by helping three Chanticleers earn All-Big South accolades in 2010. Senior forward Joseph Harris was named to the All-Big South first team after averaging 14.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Harris rewrote the record books during his time at Coastal and finished his career as the Chanticleer all-time leader in rebounds, blocked shots, field-goal percentage and games played. Harris is also the only player in the history of the Big South with 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 200 steals and 100 blocked shots. Junior Chad Gray was also selected to the All-Big South first team after ranking seventh in the league and leading the team with 14.3 points per game. Hogan also helped Kierre Green-wood land on the Big South All-Freshman Team following a sea-
son that saw Greenwood average 9.1 points per game and rank eighth in the conference with 3.34 assists per game. Coastal proved to be one of the top defensive teams in the country under Hogan’s tutelage. Freshman Sam McLaurin set a new single season school re-cord with 57 blocked shots to break the previous record of 51 set by Mohammed Acha during the 1992-93 season. McLaurin’s 57 rejections currently rank eighth on the school’s all-time list and he is on pace to shatter the record of 112 held by DuWayne Cheatam. Hogan spent the previous 16 years as the head coach at the University of West Florida, becoming one of the winningest coaches in the Gulf South Conference. At the time of his depar-ture, Hogan’s 239 wins was second most among active coaches in the league, and he also ranked ninth all-time in conference his-tory in wins and 11th with a .546 winning percentage (239-199). In 2005, Hogan became the ninth coach in conference history to surpass the 200-victory mark. West Florida finished with a winning percentage of .500 or better in 12 of his 16 seasons and has coached 16 All-GSC per-formers. Moochie Norris of the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets was drafted out of West Florida following his 1995-96 senior season under Hogan. Before accepting the head coach position at West Florida prior to the 1993-94 season, Hogan was an assistant coach for three years at Davidson College in Davidson, N.C. Working under current Wildcat Head Coach Bob McKillop, he served as the chief scout, directed the off-season conditioning program and was also in charge of team scheduling. As Davidson’s re-cruiting coordinator, Hogan helped bring in the bulk of a team which finished 22-8 in 1994 and earned a berth in the National
Invitational Tournament. Hogan was an important part of the Clemson men’s basket-ball program from 1984-89. He served as an assistant coach under Ellis in his first three years with the Tigers. Over his last two years, Hogan added the responsibilities of an assistant to the athletic director in addition to his duties as a coach. During his tenure, the Tigers received a post-season bid each season, earning two trips to the NCAA Tournament and three NIT berths. Hogan served as the Tigers’ chief scout and recruiting coordina-tor, and was responsible for monitoring the academic progress of the team. He also coached future NBA players Elden Campbell, Dale Davis, and twin brothers Horace and Harvey Grant. A native of North Babylon, N.Y., Hogan began his college basketball career at the University of South Alabama in Mobile as a player under Ellis. South Alabama posted a 78-33 record dur-ing Hogan’s playing career. Ellis’ first recruit at USA, Hogan was a starting guard as a freshman in 1977, scoring a career-high 24 points as the Jaguars downed New Mexico State on Dec. 17, 1976. He was also a valuable member of the Jaguars basket-ball team which advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1979 and 1980 and helped the program to its first-ever national top-10 ranking. Hogan received the University of South Alabama Most Scholastic Award for men’s basketball in 1980. Hogan earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in physi-cal education from South Alabama. He served a two-year stint as the junior varsity head coach and assistant boy’s basketball coach at Forrest High School in Ocala, Fla. Hogan returned to South Alabama for one season as an assistant, helping the Jag-uars earn an invitation to the 1984 NIT. He left his alma mater afterward, going with Ellis when he departed USA for Clemson. Hogan is married to the former Barbara Alford. They have two children, Kevin Martin and Colleen Adair. Kevin is a senior at Rollins College. Hogan is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Gus Hauser enters his second season as an assistant coach of the Coastal Carolina University men’s bas-ketball program. Hauser helped Coastal enjoy a breakout season in 2009-10 and helped the Chanticleers rewrite the
record books in the process. Hauser played an influential role in guiding Coastal to the Big South regular season championship and an appearance in the Big South Tournament championship game. The Chants finished the season with a record of 28-7 and a 15-3 mark inside the league to set new schools records for both overall victories and conference wins in a season. Coastal capped its season with a berth in the NIT to reach the postsea-son for the first time since 1993. Hauser also experienced success on an individual level by helping three Chanticleers earn All-Big South accolades in 2010. McLaurin’s 57 rejections currently rank eighth on the school’s all-time list and he is on pace to shatter the record of 112 held by DuWayne Cheatam. Prior to arriving in Conway, Hauser spent seven seasons in the coaching profession under some of the biggest names and programs in college basketball. Most recently, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, where he was responsible for team defense, scouting, scheduling, recruiting, operational aspects and other duties as assigned. Hauser helped the Warhawks to their first in-season tournament championship in 15 years and an upset of Iowa in 2007-08. Hauser had a successful two-year run at New Mexico State, coaching on Reggie Theus’ staff. In his two years in Las Cru-ces, Hauser helped the Aggies to a Western Athletic Conference Championship, NCAA Tournament berth and more than 40 wins. NMSU posted a 25-9 record in Hauser’s final season with the team, claimed the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and faced Texas in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. He also helped New Mexico State to a 16-14 record in his first year, which was the fifth-best turnaround record-wise in the nation. Under Hauser’s leadership the Aggies finished the sea-son ranked third in the WAC in scoring (71.5 points per game)
and field goal percentage (.455) and finished fourth in turnover margin (+.19) and fifth in three-point field goal percentage (.350). Hauser spent two seasons working for legendary head coach Rick Pitino as a graduate assistant at Louisville prior to his time at New Mexico State. While there, he helped the Cardinals advance to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments. His assistance in recruiting and opponent scouting helped the Cardinals claim the 2005 Conference USA regular season and tournament champi-onships. Louisville’s 2005 appearance in the Final Four marked its return to the National Semifinals for the first time since 1986, a span covering almost 20 years. Before joining Pitino at UL, Hauser spent one season as a volunteer assistant coach at Transylvania University where he helped the Pioneers to an eight-game improvement in the win column and a 13-11 overall record. Hauser was a point guard at Furman, lettering three-years and being named to the All-Southern Conference Academic Team and the Furman University Dean’s List. Richie Riley begins his second season as an assis-
tant coach for the Coastal Carolina University men’s
basketball program.
Riley’s arrival at Coastal Carolina
helped jumpstart a program on the verge of noto-
riety. His influence played a major role in taking the program to
heights and his insight is expected to help maintain the Chanti-
cleers as one of the top teams in the Big South.
Riley provided an immediate impact for Coastal and helped
lead the Chants to a record of 28-7 and a 15-3 mark inside the
league to set new schools records for both overall victories and
conference wins in a season. Coastal capped its season with a
berth in the NIT to reach the postseason for the first time since
1993.
The Chanticleers won the Big South regular season title and
finished runners-up in the Big South Tournament.
Riley also experienced success on an individual level by help-
ing three Chanticleers earn All-Big South accolades in 2010. Se-
nior forward Joseph Harris was named to the All-Big South first
team after averaging 14.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game.
Harris rewrote the record books during his time at Coastal and
finished his career as the Chanticleer all-time leader in rebounds,
blocked shots, field-goal percentage and games played.
Harris is also the only player in the history of the Big South
with 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 200 steals and 100 blocked
shots.
Junior Chad Gray was also selected to the All-Big South first

with 14.3 points per game. Riley also helped Kierre Greenwood
land on the Big South All-Freshman Team following a season that
saw Greenwood average 9.1 points per game and rank eighth in

57 rejections currently rank eighth on the school’s all-time list
and he is on pace to shatter the record of 112 held by DuWayne
Cheatam.
Riley joined the Chanticleer staff after spending three sea-
sons at Pikeville College in Pikeville, Ky. Riley was the associate
head coach for the Bears for the 2008-09 season and was the
recruiting coordinator for three seasons.
While at Pikeville, Riley helped guide the Bears to a 42-21
mark in two seasons. The Bears’ 2007 and 2008 recruiting
classes were rated in the top-five in the nation at the NAIA level
by RecruitingRumors.com and the Victory Sports Network. The
classes included 11 NCAA Division I transfers and five Kentucky
high school players. Riley was recognized for his recruiting abili-
ties by being named the Top NAIA Assistant Coach by the Recruit-
ingRumors.com website.
Riley was an assistant coach at the University of Hawai’i-
Pacific for the 2005-06 season and was a volunteer assistant
coach at Georgetown (Ky.) College for two seasons (2003-05).
Riley earned his bachelor’s degree in special education with
a minor in English from Eastern Kentucky in 2005. Riley played

2009-10 Big south ChaMpions
The Coastal Carolina men’s basketball team turned the corner in 2009-10 and put together one of the greatest seasons in school history. The Chanticleers finished the season 28-7 and 15-3 in the Big South and set school record
for both overall wins and conference victories. Coastal went on to make an appearance in the Big South Tourna-ment title game and earn a berth in the NIT to reach the postseason for the first time since 1993. The Chanticleers began the season picked to finish eighth in the Big South in the annual preseason poll. Coastal, however, reeled off wins in 16 of its first 18 games and showed the rest of the league that the Chan-ticleers were a force to be reckoned with. Coastal began conference play 6-0 and turned in double digit margin victories in 12 of its 15 league contests. “What we did last year has never happened here at Coastal in all of the years of playing basketball,” fourth-year head coach and 2010 Big South Coach of the Year Cliff Ellis said. “That was a very special team.” Expectations will once again be high this season as Coastal looks to defend its Big South regular season championship. The Chanticleers return just two start-ers from last year’s team, but many in and around the program feel this season’s squad may in fact be more talented. “The whole focus is trying to be the best that we can
be everyday when we step out on the court,” Ellis said. “Sure we would like to win that many games again, but I try not to put a number on how many games we need or have to win. I do feel like we have a chance to be a really good basketball team this year.” Most coaches will tell you that the key to being a good basketball team and have a successful seasons starts with having good senior leadership. Forward Joseph Har-ris provided the Chanticleers with that senior leadership last season and finished his career as one of the top play-ers in Coastal Carolina and Big South history. A two-time All-Big South first team selection, Harris leaves Coastal first all-time in rebounds (1,152) blocked shots (142), games played (134), second in steals (205) and sixth in scoring (1,444). He is the first and only player in con-ference history with 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 200 steals and 100 blocked shots. If the Chanticleers want to duplicate the successes of last season, Coastal will first and foremost have to find someone on this year’s team to replace the production of Harris. “There really is no way to replace a player like Joe Harris,” Ellis said. “We just have to try and find a way to reload. He broke Coastal Carolina records and Big South records and replacing him is next to impossible. We are going to put five men on the court and look to everybody to fill in. Without a doubt, though, his rebounding and
motor will be missed this year.” Junior transfer Brandon Crawford is one of the can-didates to replace Harris on the wing. Crawford comes to Coastal Carolina after spending last season at North-west Florida State College. The Montgomery, Ala., native averaged 10.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game last year for the Raiders. In addition, Crawford posted several games with double-doubles, which included games with at least 20 points. Crawford played his freshman season at Jacksonville State and drew starts in nine of the 24 games in which he appeared. He finished the season with an average of 10.0 points per game and ranked 25th in the Ohio Valley in scoring. He added 3.7 rebounds per game and was a threat from three-point range as he boasted a .431 shooting percentage from beyond the arc. “Brandon Crawford is a guy that has a tremendous motor and a nose for the ball,” Ellis said. “He has the ability to step out and shoot along with the ability to post up. I think he can really have a say in how much we will miss Joe Harris this year.” Senior Chad Gray strengthens the front court and re-turns as the team’s leading scorer. Gray paced the team and ranked seventh in the Big South a season ago with 14.3 points per game and stood fourth in the confer-ence with a .515 field goal percentage. He was named to the All-Big South first team as a junior and was rewarded

season previewprior to the season with a selection to the preseason all-
conference team. Gray turned in five games of at least 20 points, which included a career-high 31 points on 11-for-13 shooting against Savannah State. The South Carolina transfer was also third on the team with 4.8 rebounds per game and featured eight games with at least seven rebounds. “Chad Gray is a really talented player who is going to be up for a lot of conference awards this season,” Ellis said. “I’m really looking forward to watching him play this year because he can do so much. He is a multi-talented kid who can step out, go inisde, run the floor, defend and rebound. He can really do it all.” The Chanticleers should also benefit from another South Carolina transfer when former Gamecock Mike Hol-mes joins the team in December. Holmes is expected to provide the Chants with another physical presence in the post that can score and rebound the basketball. A native of Bishopville, S.C., Holmes averaged 10.8 points per game and a team-high 7.7 rebounds per game at South Carolina on his way to posting six double-doubles during the season. “I think Mike Holmes is going to be a major factor in this league if you look at his track record as an SEC play-er,” Ellis said. He brings a lot to the table and has proven himself as an outstanding rebounder. I think our team will go to another level when he joins the lineup.” Sophomore Sam McLaurin adds even more depth to an already loaded frontcourt and played an instrumental role last season in helping the Chants feature one of the top defensive units in the NCAA. McLaurin started 34 of
the 35 games he played and finished second on the team with 5.0 rebounds per game. McLaurin served as a huge defensive presence for the Chants last year and was one of the most feared shot blockers in the Big South. He finished the year with 57 blocked shots and set the Coastal single season record for rejections in the process. Look for McLaurin to have a more expanded role in the offense this year and put together another strong year on both ends of the floor. “Sam McLaurin is a guy that just keeps coming on as a player, and I think his game is going to step up to another level,” Ellis said. “He was without question our best in-side defender last year and I think he has gotten stronger heading into this year. I think we will see more scoring out of him, but we just want him to continue his solid play.” The Coastal frontcourt also features one of the tallest players in the conference in junior center Jon Pack. The 6-foot-11 post can play in the paint and be a rebounding force for the Chants down low. Pack provided Coastal will solid minutes and contributed in key situations in Coast-al’s run to the Big South title. “Jon Pack has played well for us the last couple of years,” Ellis said. “I think he can really help this team because of the way he runs the floor, rebounds the bas-ketball and defends.” Coastal Carolina features one of the deepest and most athletic backcourts in the Big South, as seven guards are expected to see substantial minutes this season. Headlining that group of guards is returning starter and sophomore Kierre Greenwood. Greenwood started all 35 games for the Chants last season as a true fresh-man and finished the season with 9.1 points per game and a team-leading 117 assists. In fact, Greenwood ranked eighth in the Big South with 3.3 assists per game and was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native put together 10 games with at least five assists and featured 18 games where he scored in double digits.
“Kierre Greenwood had a tremendous freshman sea-son and will be up for several conference awards this sea-son,” Ellis said. “I don’t think we would have had as much success last season without him. He really exceeded ex-pectations as a freshman in this league. He is long, he can get to the paint and can hit an open jumper. He is going to do a lot of great things at Coastal.” Fellow sophomore Danny Nieman is back for his sec-ond season in teal and black and is another candidate who could earn a starting role. Nieman saw action in 33 games last season and ranked up 102 assists in a backup role. In fact, Nieman was very efficient with the ball in his hands and led the Big South with a 2.6 assist/turnover ratio. The Concord, N.C., native only committed 40 turnovers in 783 minutes (23.7 mpg) of action. “Danny Nieman is an all-around player who can play the point or on the wing,” Ellis said. “Nobody brings as much intensity to the table as Danny. He is a fierce com-petitor and will be on the court somehow, someway once the season starts. He brings a lot of chemistry and glue and I don’t think we would have won 28 games last year without him.” Coastal fans will have their first opportunity to see sophomore Anthony Raffa suit up in a Chanticleer uniform this season. Raffa sat out last season after transferring from Albany and provides the Chants with another weapon from three-point range. Raffa averaged 9.7 points per game and 3.3 rebounds per game as a freshman for Albany in 2008-09. Raffa scored at least 20 points twice for the Great Danes and also poured in double figures against national power-house Kansas. “Anthony Raffa sat out last season after trasnferring from Albany, but he was able to practice with us on the scout team,” Ellis said. “What I like about him is that he is gutty. He can really push the ball in the open court and hit the open shot. He really plays hard on defense too.” Junior Dexter Moore is another guard who should can
Kierre Greenwood led the Chanticleers with 117 assists last season and ranked eighth in the Big South Conference with 3.3 helpers per game.

step in and provide the Chants with a viable option in the backcourt. Moore drew two starts a season ago and scored a season-high 16 points against Vorhees. Moore also proved to be one of the best shooters in the league and finished the season with a .426 shooting percentage from three-point range. “Dexter has really been able to shoot the ball for us throughout his career here,” Ellis said. “He’s gotten stronger and has an ability to dribble, pass, defend and handle the ball. He has gotten better and better as he has progressed.” Senior Jordan Griffin is another returnee that should add depth to the backcourt. Griffin had a solid season for the Chants last year after transferring in from Thomas More College. “Jordan Griffin makes our team much better because he brings a tremendous work ethic both on the court and in the lockerroom,” Ellis said.. “He is a hard nosed player that loves to play the game of basketball. He wants to see us succeed and I believe his attitude rubs off on the other players.” The Coastal guard corps welcomes two newcomers in Desmond Holloway and Willie Kirkland that are expected to provide an immediate impact with the Chanticleers. Holloway arrives in Conway after two successful sea-sons at Wabash Valley College. In his two seasons at Wabash Valley, Holloway averaged 17.1 points per game during that span. The Indianapolis, Ind., native poured in 18.1 points per game and 4.0 rebounds per year and was named to the all-conference first team and the all-tournament first team. Holloway averaged 16.1 points per game during his freshman season. “Desmond Holloway is a long and athletic guard who can do it all,” Ellis said. “He should be a major factor for us at the two guard position this year. I’m looking forward to seeing his performance this year.” Willie Kirkland is another newcomer that should see extended minutes on the floor this season. Kirkland spent
last season at Gulf Coast Community College and scored 12.4 points per game on his way to being named to the All-Panhandle first team. Kirkland has the ability to take the ball to the basket and hit and outside jumper and should be one of the more versatile players for the Chan-ticleers this season. “Willie Kirkland is a guy that is strong and can get to the hole because of his size,” Ellis said. “He is one of those power guards and I think he is going to bring a lot to the team.” Sixteen home games and premier non-conference matchups against Georgetown and LSU highlight the Coastal Carolina 2010-11 men’s basketball schedule. Coastal Carolina opens the season at home for the fourth consecutive year when the Chanticleers welcome Piedmont College to Kimbel Arena Friday, Nov. 12 before making a quick turnaround and hosting LaGrange College the following day. The Chanticleers hit the road for the first time Nov. 16 when Coastal heads south to take on the College of Charleston from Carolina First Arena. The Chanticleers return to Charleston two days later to take part in the Charleston Classic Nov. 18-21. Coastal faces perennial power Georgetown Nov. 18 in the opening round of the event, while second are third round matchups are still to be determined. Charlotte, East Carolina, George Mason, NC State, USC Upstate and Wofford make up the remaining teams of the classic. Following its trip to Charleston, Coastal returns home and plays seven of its next eight games inside Kimbel Arena. The Chanticleers close the month of November with games against North Carolina Wesleyan (Nov. 23) and The Citadel (Nov. 27). The Chanticleers begin their Big South title defense Dec. 4, hosting conference rival Charleston Southern. Coastal steps back out of conference Dec. 13 with a trip to Baton Rouge, La., to battle SEC foe LSU. Coastal returns home and begins a four-game home-
stand by hosting East Carolina at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Dec. 19. The Chanticleers next welcome Thomas More to Kimbel Arena Dec. 20 before taking 11 days off before retuning to conference play Dec. 31 with a home game against Radford. The Chanticleers also feature conference home games against High Point (Jan. 2), Winthrop (Jan. 13), Presby-terian (Jan. 15), Liberty (Feb. 3), VMI (Feb. 5), Gardner-Webb (Feb. 15) and UNC Asheville (Feb. 22). Coastal also takes part in Big South road games at VMI (Jan. 6), Liberty (Jan. 8), UNC Asheville (Jan. 20), Gardner-Webb (Jan. 22), High Point (Jan. 27), Radford (Jan. 29), Presbyterian (Feb. 10), Winthrop (Feb. 12) and Charleston Southern (Feb. 26). “We play a tremendously strong non-conference schedule that we feel like is going to prepare us for an-other tough conference slate of games,” Ellis said. “We signed a four-year agreement with The Citadel and they come here this year in what I think can develop into a rivalry similar to when we play the College of Charleston. East Carolina is coming to town in a game that will be played at the Convention Center, and LSU will be a nice test for us against a good SEC opponent.”
Danny Nieman dished out 102 assists as a true freshman and led the Big South Conference with a 2.6 assist/turnover ration. Nieman committed only 40 turnovers in 783 minutes of action.
Sam McLaurin was a defensive force for the Chanticleers in the post last year. McLaurin led the team and ranked fifth in the Big South with 57 blocked shots on his was to
setting a new Coastal single-season record.

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Confer-ence has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Divi-
sion I athletic conference is evident by athletic accom-plishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally foster-ing the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Win-throp. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was se-lected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to consti-tute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and wom-en’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Confer-ence implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 14 years at
the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instru-mental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Con-ference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirm-ing the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through ath-letic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presby-terian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Con-ference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Confer-ence has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had four individual National Champions, more than 220 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship five times in ad-dition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team four consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, has had four NFL Draft picks, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s
highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four out of the last six years – including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (Cross Country, 10,000-meter run), Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Confer-ence history. Two former Big South student-athletes also reached national prominence last year. VMI’s Reggie Wil-liams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson captured his third PGA Tour win during his third year on the tour. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunc-tion with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball cham-pionship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Confer-ence’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Con-ference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its 26 years of existence.

Coastal Carolina University won the prestigious George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup for a record-setting ninth time in 2006-07. The Sasser Cup, named for the former Coastal Carolina Athletic Director and Big South Commissioner, honors the top overall athletic depar tment in the Big South Conference. The award is based on a point system, with points being awarded based upon each school’s finish in each of the 18 league-sponsored sports. The Chanticleers’ nine Sasser Cup awards are the most earned by one school in Big South history. Coastal won the 2006-07 award by capturing Big South titles in football, women’s indoor track, men’s golf, women’s tennis (tournament) and baseball (regular-season and tournament). In addition to the Big South honors, Coastal Carolina was represented in six different NCAA Championships.

ABOUT THE POSTSEASONThe Chanticleers finished the regular season with a 20-7 overall record and a 13-1 mark
in the Big South Conference. The postseason saw Coastal Carolina take the number one seed into the conference tournament after winning its fourth consecutive regular season Big South crown. Coastal Carolina marched through the conference tourney in Anderson, S.C., and captured its second straight championship by defeating Augusta College 89-54 in the Chants’ national television debut on ESPN. It was then on to Jackson, Miss., for a game with the Tigers of Jackson State in the NCAA Tournament Play-in game. Robert Dowdell, who was named the ESPN/Coca-Cola Player of the Game, led the Chants to a 78-59 rout over the Tigers, gaining Coastal Carolina a spot in its first-ever NCAA Tournament.
The Chants drew a Southeast Region match-up as the 15th seed against Bobby Knight and his second-seeded Indiana Hoosiers. The Chants began slowly in front of the Hoosier-biased crowd of 18,217 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky. The heavily favored Hoosiers took a 46-30 halftime lead as the national television audience of CBS looked on. The second half saw the real Chanticleers stand up as senior Brian Penny pumped in 25 second half points and pulled the Chants to within three at 66-63 with 2:55 remaining. The Hoosiers’ Damon Bailey then sank a three-pointer and Indiana connected from the charity stripe down the stretch as it held on for a 79-69 win. Penny, whose performance was heralded as “one of the best I’ve ever seen” by CBS analyst Bill Walton, was named the CBS/Chevrolet Player of the Game.
ABOUT THE POSTSEASONCoastal Carolina recorded its seventh 20-win season by notching a 22-10 overall record,
including a 12-4 Big South Conference mark. After entering February with a 10-8 overall record, the Chanticleers turned up the heat and finished the season by going 12-2. The streak included an 11-game winning streak which began on February 8 and ended with the program’s third Big South Conference Tournament championship. In the conference tournament, the Chanticleers defeated the home standing Buccaneers of Charleston Southern University 79-66 at the North Charleston Coliseum in Charleston, S.C. In the semis, Maryland Baltimore County fell to Coastal Carolina 66-59. It was then to the finals as Coastal Carolina squared off with tourney cinderella Winthrop University. The Chants proved to be too much and crushed the glass slipper with a 78-65 victory over the Eagles. The win vaulted Coastal Carolina into the 1993 NCAA Tournament.
When the field was set, the Chants were seeded 16th in the West Region and drew the “Fab 5” of the Michigan Wolverines. The mighty Wolverines, sporting arguably the best class ever to be recruited by one NCAA institution, used their size advantage to the fullest to down the Chants 84-53. Coastal Carolina superstar Tony Dunkin led the Chants with 17 points and added six rebounds. The flashy dunks and “in-your-face” play of Mohammed Acha captured much of the spotlight as he tallied 10 points and nine rebounds to be named the CBS/Chevrolet Player of the Game.

50howard brown
(1981-82)Howard Brown was a member of the
Coastal Carolina basketball program for just 23 games, but remains a part of the Chanticleer family in the hearts of many.
Brown, a 6-8 center who transferred to Coastal Carolina from Spar tanburg-Methodist College, is remembered as a fan favorite. On February 6, 1982, he came off of the bench and slammed home the final basket in Coastal Carolina’s 80-59 Homecoming Day win over Erskine College. Unknown at the time, that basket proved to be his last in a game.
On Feb. 7, Brown suffered a heart attack following practice and passed away.
25tony dunKin(1990-1993)
Tony Dunkin is commonly called the best player to have ever worn a Coastal Carolina uniform. From 1990 to 1993, he not only led the Chanticleers, but he also dominated the Big South Conference.
Dunkin remains today the only player in NCAA Division I history to be named a conference’s Player of the Year four consecutive times. He was also a four-time All-Conference and three time All-Tournament selection. Dunkin, also the 1990 Big South Conference Rookie of the Year, scored a Chanticleer and Big South Conference record 2,151 points.
Adding to Dunkin’s legendary career at Coastal Carolina is the fact that he led the Chanticleers to the 1991 and 1993 NCAA Tournaments. In 1991, he scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds in a 10-point loss to Indiana. Dunkin then scored 17 points and pulled down six rebounds against Michigan’s “Fab Five” in the 1993 Dance.
