This booklet is one of six in a series that offers launch points for one-on-one conversations with prospective students about the programs of study, student clubs and activities, and potential careers that are available through Corning Community College's various academic divisions. To bring this project to fruition, I identified student, faculty, alumni, and employer stories; solicited testimonials and/or conducted interviews; arranged for all photography; wrote all copy; and developed the layout and design of all pieces in this series as part of a Recruitment (sales) communication plan for this two-year State University of New York (SUNY) institution.

“I love the energy you get from teaching and interacting with students when they’re asking questions based on critical thinking, when they’re not just processing data but they’re really thinking about ‘How does this apply?’ and ‘In what situation does this apply?’ I love that. I get excited about that. More importantly the students get excited about what they are learning.”[ [

In the Spring of 2009, Jean Anne took a sabbatical to Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Working with the human service systems there, she helped establish an ambitious early childhood program called“Edu-care.”The goal of the “Edu-care” program was for every child to have the opportunity to get through school and to go to college at Nelson Mandela University. The challenge in South Africa, however, is that many children drop out of school (if they even go) before the sixth grade.

4

Jean Anne called upon colleagues at CCC to lend their expertise, including Cathy McLaughlin, Associate Professor in Early Childhood and advisor to CCC’s Future Educators Club at the time. Together Jean Anne and colleagues at CCC developed a floor-plan for the “Edu-care” facility, materials requirements, and curricula.

“An important piece of this was the connection with CCC. When I connected with Cathy, she wrote me back saying, ‘CCC would like to help.’ I didn’t ask for this. They wanted to do it. CCC’s Future Educators Club, Psychology Club, and Human Services Society and their advisors ended up collecting over $1,000.00 worth of materials, including money for us to buy some early childhood pre-school curricula for the kids, which the kids were able to start using before I left.”

“It’s really difficult because these kids don’t get the nurturing they need in their early years, so they’re not ready for school when they start and they quickly fall behind. A lot of kids never get past the first or second grade—a LOT of kids. They don’t have the opportunities we do to go to Head Start or day care or programs like that.”

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.

shaping young minds

“One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with

gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is

so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the

growing plant and for the soul of the child.”~Carl Jung

[ [Shape the minds of future generations and affect the impact their lives will have on our community and our world.

“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy

in creative expression and knowledge.”

~ Albert Einstein

“The early childhood courses have taught me so much both personally and professionally. They have given me knowledge and confidence, which is so important in my job.

“I recommend CCC to everyone. Believe in yourself and CCC will help you get there.”

serve and protect

“It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”

-Robert Francis Kennedy

[ [Real threats to our way of life do exist. The good news is that you can be a part of the solution. Learn how.
