AND KENMORE
by Kathy ReandeauThe title is a bit intimidating, isn’t it?
After all, it mentions prison and who really
wants to talk about that? It’s easier to
sweep it under the rug and pretend this
is somebody else’s concern. That works
unless you’re one of the four people in
America who is impacted by this issue,
including inmates, corrections officers,
victims and all of their families and
friends. Even if you’re not in one of these
groups, you are still affected simply by
living in New York.
Currently there are about 35,000 people
being held in 70 prisons across the state.
Tax dollars are spent supporting those
people and possibly their families during
the time of incarceration. When they’re
released, recidivism rates are high - 40%
of men return to prison in three years,
while 30% of the women do. Those who
don’t are expected to be able to assimilate
back into society and family life. There
are high divorce rates among both inmates
and officers. But perhaps those that suffer
most are the children. There are about
10,000 children of inmates in NYS. They
are 8-10 times more likely to follow in
their parents’ footsteps because there are
no role models, and nobody who fills the
void when a parent is away. This will
affect all of us down the road.
Instead of ignoring these statistics
what if we spent time thinking about
the questions of how to help people in
prison and after they’re released, what
can be done to support their families and
victims, can we make it any easier for the
corrections officers, and what can we do
to bring God into this equation?
That’s exactly what the 4th Restorative
Justice Ministry/Prison Ministry Conference
plans to do. This event gathers together
experts to provide an education of what
is going on in the field, describe positive
things that are happening, and highlight
dedicated people who will share their
insights on what we can do to help. This
is an opportunity to talk to professionals
with hundreds of years of experience, who
most would not otherwise have a chance
to meet. Display booths will provide
materials and information on different
ministries. Training will be available for
those who want to learn how to do more.
We are celebrating our First Year Anniversary this month!!!! Thanks to all those who support our efforts!!! I feel truly blessed that things continue and that we are expanding into other communities in WNY.

by Kevin WalkerThe Reformers Unani-
mous Program at Light-house Baptist Church in North Tonawanda has been helping those in our community for over three years now. The Bible based program boasts an 80% recov-ery rate, if the program is followed through. While speaking with the Director, Joshua Freund-schuh, he stated that addictions of every kind, including alcohol, drugs, pornography, gambling and others are dealt with in a Biblical program. This approach uses Scripture to emphasize
the recovery process. In each group (men with men, ladies with ladies), everyone can openly discuss what issues, set-backs and accomplish-ments they have had that week without the details of the addiction and in a non-judgmental setting.
Reformers Unanimous class format is split up into three different seg-ments which are entitled Talk, Talk, Talk ! Each section is designed to develop a personal re-lationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Talk to God: Prayer and Testimonies
First, we talk to God in prayer and testimony. Each student is given an opportunity to share a need or request to be prayed for. We then have an encouraging testimony time where many students are able to share personal victo-ries they have experi-enced that week.
Talk to Each Other: Counsel Groups
Second, we talk to each other. Reformers Unanimous breaks into counsel groups to share each of our burdens or blessings. Each group is led by a counsel leader. If anyone needs
personal counsel, it is made available. Students go over their completed challenges during this time and encourage each other in their road to recovery.
God Talks to Us: Preaching
Third, God talks to us. He does that, Lord willing, during the message. Reformers Unanimous doesn’t just
listen to people talk about their problems. We teach what God says to do about it. We teach the Holy Bible.
The group meets every Friday at 7:00pm and on Sunday morn-ings at 10:00. The group
is open to everyone and there is no cost to attend meetings.

St. Paul Lutheran Church, 453 Old Falls Blvd., North Tonawanda will be holding its annual “Original Breakfast with the Bunny” for the community on Saturday, April 2 from 10 am to 12 noon.
All events of the day are held indoors including the breakfast, Easter Egg Hunt, games, crafts, and prize drawings.
Cost of the event is $2.00 per person; children younger than two years old are FREE.
A photo with the bunny costs $1.00The admission fee includes breakfast and
a visit with the bunny and a gift . Each child will also receive a bag for the Easter Egg Hunt, a coloring activity packet, four game tickets, prizes, a large craft project and a small project in addition to one entry per child for the door prize.
The breakfast menu includes cereal, hard-boiled eggs, French toast sticks, sausage, donut holes, fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee, and tea.
This year marks the thirteenth year that the church has sponsored the community event. In 1999 and 2000 it was known as “The Easter Extravaganza” with only the Easter Egg Hunt, games, and crafts. Starting in 2001, the breakfast was added.
“We usually have somewhere from 300 - 400 people who attend”, said Karen Sinon, who is again the chairperson for the event. “It is always a fun day for everyone. It’s great to be able to use all of our inside spaces for the event. Cold weather, rain, or snow never messes up the day. We look forward to seeing lots of kids and parents from the community again this year.”
