Many years passed, and Joseph’s family grew very largein Egypt. His family lived in the land of Goshen.They pros-pered in Goshen. Joseph and his brothers died aftermany blessed years. Their families continued to grow.

Pharaoh became the new king of Egypt. He did notknow Joseph. He did not like that there were so manyIsraelites. Joseph’s families were called Israelites.Pharaoh was afraid that the Israelites would somedaytake over and attack the Egyptians. So he made slavesout of the many people. Pharaoh worked them extreme-ly hard. But the harder they worked, the more babiesthey had.

Pharaoh decided this growth could no longer happen.He ordered the Israelite midwives to kill all the baby boysthat were born. The midwives did not listen to Pharaoh.They obeyed God and did not kill the baby boys.

One woman gave birth to a boy and saw that he wasvery handsome. She did not want to loose him. So shekept him hidden for three months. After three months, shecould no longer keep him secret. She wove a reed basket,and put pitch on the bottom. Once the basket was ready,she laid her baby boy in it and put the basket in the river.She told her daughter to watch over and see who pickedthe basket out of the river. This woman knew God wouldtake care of her baby.

Nearby, Pharaoh’s daughter was bathing in the river.She saw a basket floating and asked her handmaid to pullit out of the river. They discovered a baby boy. Pharaoh’sdaughter immediately had compassion on the child. Shewanted to keep him. She named him Moses. A young girltold the princess that she knew of an Israelite nurse whocould look after Moses. The princess told the young girl tobring the nurse to her.

After Moses grew into a young man, his mother had toreturn him to Pharaoh’s daughter. He became a prince inEgypt. Many years had passed, and the slavery wasgrowing worse. Moses did not like that the Israelites wereslaves.

One day, Moses saw an Egyptian hitting an Israeliteslave. This made Moses angry. So he killed the Egyptian.Moses thought no one was watching. However, someonewas. When Pharaoh found out about it, he wanted to killMoses. Moses had no choice but to flee. He fled toMidian, where he met Jethro. Moses became a shepherdfor Jethro. Shortly after, Moses married Jethro’s daughter,Zipporah.

One day, Moses was tending his father-in-law’s sheepnear Mount Sinai. He saw a bush burning with fire. As hegot closer, he saw that the bush was not burning up!Moses was curious. God spoke to Moses from the burn-ing bush. He told Moses to remove his shoes because theground where he was standing was holy.

God saw that the Israelites were enslaved. God toldMoses that He was going to send him to Egypt to lead Hispeople out. God called the Israelites “His people.” Moseswas very uncertain about going to Egypt. God showedhim a miracle that he would do before Pharaoh. God com-mand Moses to cast his rod to the ground. As soon asMoses did, the rod turned into a large snake. God com-manded Moses to pick it up by the tail. Moses grasped it,and the snake became a rod in his hand.

Moses was worried about going to Egypt because hecould not speak well. God sent Aaron, Moses’ brotheralong with him. Aaron would talk to Pharaoh. God warnedthem that Pharaoh would not let the Israelites go rightaway. God would have to perform many miracles beforePharaoh would be convinced to let them go. He liked thatthey were his slaves, but God did not like this. God prom-ised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that He would blessHis people and that they would prosper. The Israeliteswere not prospering as slaves. God was going to deliverthem and bring them to a land flowing with milk andhoney.

Moses and Aaron traveled to Egypt to see Pharaoh.Parents, explain to your children the many miracles thatGod performed so Pharaoh would let the Israelites go.
