Most flowers, like the ones in the pictures on this page, have four parts. Notice the flower buds. The green parts of flower bud are the sepals. They cover and protect the flower growing inside. As the flower grows, it forces the sepals apart. The bud opens into a beautiful flower.
When you look at a flower, you probably notice the petals first. The petals are the colorful parts of the flower. The petals attract bees, butterflies, birds, and other living things.
Notice the five small, knoblike structures in the center of the ring of petals. These structure make up the pistil is the part of the flower that make eggs. The eggs will grow into seeds when they are combined with sperm in pollen.
Now look just below the pistil. You can see the cluster of stamens with rounded tips. The stamens make tiny grains of pollen at their tips. A flower needs sperm in pollen to combine with the flower’s egg to make seeds.
