Policy Accomplishments

• 34 bills were monitored and tracked

• 21 letters of support written on these issues: health reform, environmental health, boys and men of color and mental health

• Testimony provided at 6 separate hearings

• Participation in 16 Hearings and/or policy meetings

• 12 speaking engagements on mental health, black infant health or health reform

• One-on-one relationships built with key policy makers:

• Senator Curren Price

• Assemblymember Dr. Richard Pan (Chair, Assembly Health)

• Assemblymember Roger Dickerson

2013 Accomplished Strategies

• Collaboration with Legislative Black Caucus Members

• Establishment of the CBHN Black Infant Health Alliance

• Collaborative Grant Applications leading to funding for 10 statewide CBO’s and CBHN

• Participation in broad-based work groups addressing specific policy issues:

• Boys and Men of Color

• Black Infant Health

• Environmental/Energy

• Mental Health & Cultural Competency for African Americans

• Partnership with Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson on Health Agenda

• Partnership conversatrions with Debbie Raphael, Director, Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC)

Strategies in the Making

• Partnership with National Council of Black State Legislators

• Partnership with Golden State Medical Association on policy/advocacy issues

• Resource to the Congressional Black Caucus on ACA implementation issues

• Colors of Commitment Movement to be expanded and promoted. Goal: 5000 wristbands distributed across the sate by 2015.

• Developing a national model for addressing prevention/wellness strategies and associated policy implications in the Faith-based community

The CBHN/Alere Faith-based Policy Initiative

• $100,000 Grant

• A model for behavioral change

• Involved 6 churches

• Data collection to support prevention/wellness policy initiative

• White paper being drafted to outline policy implications

• TCE’s Dr. Robert Ross has indicated keen interest in this project. Proposed meeting between Alereand TCE being coordinated.
