It’s difficult to imagine a destination that offers divers, snorkellersand those who simply love the water, more to see and do than theCayman Islands. Below the tranquil, azure waters that line GrandCayman and her two sister islands, Little Cayman and CaymanBrac, a world of magic awaits. For divers, it’s the opportunity toexperience first-hand the legendary walls, reefs and wrecks thathave made our islands famous the world over. For snorkellers andswimmers, the chance to mingle with Stingrays, turtles, tropicalfish and corals in every colour of the rainbow.

Guests enjoy all this in bathtub-like temperatures (79°to 83°) witha visibility that often exceeds 100 feet. With an abundance ofexperienced, highly professional dive operators, state-of-the-artlive aboards and numerous snorkel sites accessible by boat orstraight from shore, the Cayman Islands is the ideal setting inwhich to explore the underwater realm. Even children can get inon the fun (with the proper adult supervision). SASY (Supplied AirSnorkelling For Youth) is available at many operations on theislands and can provide an exciting introduction to the marineworld. Additionally, kids between the ages of eight and twelve can participate in the PADI Bubblemaker or the Scuba Rangersprogrammes – where they are introduced to scuba under anInstructor’s guidance and can experience the underwater breathing sensation in depths up to 12 feet.

Unlike many underwater hot spots, which require exhausting travel to lonely outposts, the Cayman Islands is only a 75-minuteflight from Miami. Many international airlines have direct flightservice to Grand Cayman from major U.S. gateways (Atlanta,Boston, Chicago, Charlotte, Detroit, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston,Miami, Newark, Philadelphia, Tampa), as well as from Toronto,Canada, London (Heathrow), UK, Havana, Cuba and Kingston andMontego Bay, Jamaica. Some, like our national carrier, CaymanAirways, offer discount packages for divers and dive groups. The airline ’s diver-friendly service includes a variety of accommodations such as easy equipment check-in and a dedicated team of specialists to help dive groups plan the ultimatetrip. Once you’ve arrived on Grand Cayman, making the jump toeither Little Cayman or Cayman Brac couldn’t be easier. CaymanAirways’ jets fly to Cayman Brac, and Cayman Express and IslandAir offer daily flights to both Little Cayman and Cayman Brac.

If you’re not a diver, and are currently not interested in becoming one, no worries. Some of the very bestsites the Cayman Islands has to offer are in shallow waters, tailor-made for snorkelling. If this is your firstsnorkelling trip, there are some things you should be aware of, particularly when it comes to equipment. Snorkel Away#1 Mask Perhaps the single most important piece of equipment you’ll need.Ideally, you’ll want a high quality mask with a tight-fitting seal. The easiest way to test the fit of a mask is to lift the strap over thetop of the mask and press the mask to your face (being sure notto capture any strands of hair) without breathing in. If it creates aslight vacuum and stays tight to your face, you’ve got the right fit.

#2 SnorkelA snorkel is a snorkel is a snorkel. Not true! There are varyingbore sizes, different designs, alternating internal air pockets, etc.,The best advice is to find a snorkel that is comfortable, delivers air easily and breathes as dry as possible.

#3 FinsFins give you mobility and speed. You have a choice between full-foot fins (that fit like a slipper around your heel) or open-heelfins. The latter are usually worn with some kind of neoprene"booties" with flexible rubber soles. No matter what type of finsyou choose, make sure they fit snugly, but not too tight.

#4 OuterwearYou may want to use a nylon dive skin or a thin wetsuit, both forwarmth and for protection from little stinging things and the sun. If you choose not to wear one, at least don a T-shirt for sun protection. While many of the Cayman Islands’ snorkel sites arefound just off the beach, a great many more are found off a rockyshoreline called ironshore. It’s best to patrol these sites in reefshoes or some other type of protective footwear. It’s also against the law to wear gloves when snorkelling or diving in Cayman waters.

Picture This…One of the biggest thrills of visiting the underwater realm is capturing the beauty and magic for friends and family back home.Because the marine laws governing our three islands are so strictly enforced (what’s found underwater stays underwater),you’ll need to try your hand at underwater photography if youwant to bring the experience home. Fortunately, you will find anynumber of on-island providers who can help. Many operators alsovideo tape diving or snorkelling activities – a perfect keepsake, great for bragging rights!

Reefs & Marine Life Grand Cayman’s reefs offer a variety of marine life encounters.Aware that strangely clad divers and snorkellers pose no threat, the fish and critters are amazingly docile and welcoming. Largesilvery Tarpon hover motionless midwater, surrounded by glitterySilversides and magnificent French Angelfish. There are so many dive sites that are teeming with marine life, you won’t be disappointed no matter where you go. Dive andsnorkel operators visit different sites on a daily basis – so if it’svariety that you’re looking for – we have it! If there’s a particulartype of marine life that you’d like to see or capture on film – mention it to your dive/snorkel operator and get the best adviceon where to go. Best of all, no site is more than a few minutes offshore. Below are just a few island favourites.

With over 250 dive sites to choose from, Grand Cayman offers some of the greatest underwater diversity anywhere in the world. It’s all here: deep, dramatic walls adorned with sponges and corals in astunning array of colours; shallow reefs filled with schooling fish and small invertebrates; and an assortment of wrecks, each with their own peculiar character and special inhabitants. There’s also theworld’s best 12-foot dive, the legendary Stingray City. The best snorkelling is where you find “ironshore” as opposed to sand – iron shore is dry coral that used tobe below the water. Snorkellers should have buddies while in thewater for fun and added safety.

Huge BarrelSponges and swirling schools of fish are equally common.Gorgonians and hard corals also thrive in the clear, warm waters.

Walls & WrecksAmong Grand Cayman’s more spectacular dive attractions are thewalls that completely surround it. There are two wall systems inGrand Cayman; the 60-foot drop-off for those lazy afternoon shallow dives, and the second drop-off to the deep wall into theabyss. All wear a cloak of luxurious marine life. Orange ElephantEar and Strawberry Vase Sponges form vibrant underwater bouquets, while Spotted Eagle Rays, Green Turtles and other

Our local tourism association has adopted the130-foot depth limit in its Safety Guidelines, making so much more available to divers.

deep-water pelagics cruise by for a look-see. Grand Cayman’s storied wrecks are equally impressive. Reefs in and of themselves, each wreck has acquired its own family of eccentric residents, all too eager to pose for passing photographers.

Laws and regulations have been established by the Cayman Islandsgovernment for a complete and comprehensive system of MarinePark Zones strategically placed throughout Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Working in conjunction with local watersports operators, the government maintains a system of permanent moorings at all popular dive sites. The purpose of thesemoorings is to prevent coral and sponge damage by the continualdaily anchoring of boats.

The Cayman Islands government has divided the reefs into: 1)Marine Park Zones; 2) Replenishment Zones; and 3) EnvironmentalZones. Each carries its own restrictions and regulations. The MarinePark Zones encompass a large number of wall diving sites and shallow coral reefs where much of the diving is done. TheReplenishment Zones are mostly shallow water lagoons, soundsand fisheries where stocks of conch and lobster are allowed tobreed and reproduce undisturbed. The Islands’ lone EnvironmentalZone was established to ensure the preservation of the mangrovefringed North Sound (See maps on page 20).

As an added measure of protection for the islands’ fragile eco-system, diving with gloves is prohibited, so that divers andsnorkellers are not tempted to touch any of the marine life.

It’s an exhilarating, one-of-a-kind adventure. The world’s best 12-foot dive on a sandy seafloor in Grand Cayman’s North Sound, where Southern Stingrays congregate in numbers is a must-do!Accustomed to the human interaction, these gentle creatureswaste no time surrounding both divers and snorkellers alike. Inand around they glide honing in on their favourite delicacy, themorsels of squid that your dive or snorkel guide will bring along.Joining the Stingrays are Yellowtail Snapper, always eager to gulpup what the rays miss. Whether you’re an experienced diver or afamily of first-time snorkellers, the memories of swimmingamongst these graceful giants will stay with you long after yousurface. Be forewarned, however, one trip to Stingray City is but a prelude to another. And another. And another.

Walls & Wrecks Long known as one of Grand Cayman’s quieter sisters, the tinyisland of Cayman Brac screams to underwater enthusiasts theworld over. At the top of any must-do list for visitors to ‘the Brac’is the MV Capt. Keith Tibbetts. A 330-foot Russian frigate intentionally sunk off Cayman Brac’s West End in 1996, sheremains the only divable Russian warship in the WesternHemisphere. Joining the Tibbetts as part of the Brac’s uniqueunderwater world is Oceanic Voyagers, a 7-foot tall bronze statuecreated by world-renowned marine sculptor Dale Evers. Thesculpture, which depicts a pair of Spotted Dolphins cavorting withthe Cayman Islands’ famous Southern Stingrays, was sunk off theBrac’s coast at Radar Reef in January 2003 as part of a year longcelebration commemorating the Cayman Islands’ Quincentennialanniversary. These large pelagics literally come to life in and

around the multitude of dive sites on this stunning island. Otherattractions to be found in the waters off the Brac include two otherwrecks, an ancient anchor embedded in a wall, numerous healthyshallow reefs and miles of colourful sponge and coral laden drop-offs. The majestic walls of Cayman Brac showcase alabyrinth of tunnels and swim-throughs in what is the Caribbean’svery own underwater Grand Canyon.

Reefs & Marine Life Little Cayman is a tropical wilderness above and below the sea.The least developed of the three Cayman Islands, her humaninhabitants number just over 100. Though famous for her walls, the island also offers pristine shallow reefs hosting an incrediblyabundant and diverse collection of marine life, both large andsmall. Since the underwater citizens barely notice the human presence, even barracuda and groupers have no qualms aboutposing for photographs. Night dives off Little Cayman are delightful.
