hat is it about Parisian women? What is that je ne sais quois we so often hear of? It is simply an indescribable quality - or, a myriad qualities that a true parisienne seems to have that makes her that much more chic, sophisticated, cool & frankly, a bad ass. In “How to be a Pari-sian Wherever You Are” by Anne Berest, Audrey Diwan, Caroline de Mai-gret & Sophie Mas, the four authors teach us the secrets behind the art of being Parisian and how to obtain that ‘je ne sais quoi’. With a unique layout, one part images, one part jokes & snarky sarcasm, one part recipes for food & life: the book is full of anecdotes and scenarios to give the non-parisian a better idea of what the ideals of these women mean. Paris has become synonymous with so many things; class, beauty, sophistication, style; and the images we see in movies and read about in books seem almost dreamlike or unreal. However, the authors bring the Parisian back down to reality & reveal her flaws and vices: she is never satisfied, a know it all, and always late; as well, they reveal the wonderful qualities that non-parisian women envy: her undeniable chic factor, that messy natural look that she embodies, how she hosts the perfect dinner party, and what she has in her closet. The parisian woman’s thoughts on marriage, love, children, work & play may be vastly different from the stereotypical Ameri-can’s, however, all women, globally, have some quality of the Parisian and we should hold on to that quality and let it give us that je ne sais quoi.

Dallas’ coolest art gallery, WaAS , just recently

wrapped up their Collect Respect exhibit, which

featured numerous artists of various mediums in the

street style realm together under one roof.

CAVEAT had the opportunity to chat with one of

the featured artists of Collect Respect , Dallas

sculptor Kate Firth, about her style both in her art

form & personally; as well as who and what are

inspiring her, and what’s going on in the world of

Kate.

What has been the most difficult process you’ve gone through to create a new piece?

Sculptors, Nic Noblique and Mark di Suvero - both hand make their work, emphasizing the power of imagination and process with human hands. Architect, Frank Gehry - his buildings are huge steel sculptures. Modern & contempo-rary architecture.. looking at the balance of posit ive & negative space, along with l ine. Androgyny - particularly in objects & materials, stripping preconceived notions of gender.

Each piece has their own dif f icul-t ies. I am always trying new forms, hanging hardware, f inish, and fabricating processes. The sculp-ture I am currently working on is much larger compared to works I have made in the past. This proj-ect is a large outdoor, wall hung sculpture that wil l be instal led in downtown Dallas at the corner of Main Street & Lamar. I am very excited about this commission; I have recently developed an interest in large outdoor work, trying something new & challenging for myself by placing my work in a public space instead of gallery walls.

Firstly, in 30 words or less, in the most cre-ative way you can, will you tell us what it is you do & what your art form & medium is, & anything else you can fit in there?

I am a sculptor that special izes in steel . My style is inspired by the contemporary, but I work ina traditional handmade manner.

I grew up doing a lot of extreme sports. I was always hitt ing up construction sites in the neighborhood to get build-ing materials for ramps. After learning how to build ramps & grind rai ls, I began making my own longboards skateboards. I ’d experiment with boar shapes, materials & paint jobs. My dad would drive me to Home Depot & teach me how to use power tools; he was always supportive of what I was creating, which really al lowed me to be creative. Both of my parents inf luenced me heavily

What is currently inspiring you as an artist and as a human being?*

How would you describe your younger years & how they affected your career trajectory?

in hindsight. My dad is an electrical engineer & my mom is an interior designer. It ’s kind of funny looking back to how I grew up and my parents’ inf luence - when you blend an engineer and a designer, that’s the job description of a steel sculptor.

Page 29: Caveat Magazine

2 8“ I T ” G I R L O F S T R E E T A R T

What was the first project you were extremely proud of and fed your inner artist most, conv-incing you to continue?

The first steel sculpture I ever made at age 18. Since I was a kid, I thought there was somethi-ng so amazing about making objects by hand at any size your imagination and abil i t ies would al low. one I f inished my first steel sculpture, I knew that’s what I was meant to do.

Fresh perspective.

IN DOWNTOWN DALLAS.

What do you want people to know most ab-out your art form, & you?

Because we think fashion & art are totally connected & work in unison, will you desc-ribe your favorite outfit you own and give us 5 words that describe your personal style?

Although I am often in studio clothes, when I go out, this is my favorite outfit : black boots, polka dot dress, black skinny jeans, speckled dark purple & black deep v-shirt, with my 80s black & grey single button blazer with shoulder pads. 4 words that describe my style: Well , I don't real ly know how to answer that myself. I guess i f I had to cal l i t anything maybe, industrial chic? • industrial •androgynous •polished •casual

If you had endless resources, what

would you do with your life?

Do you believe in love at first

sight? Why or why not?

Either work in stock and investment, or

Travel the world to see all the lost and

No. You have to get to know someone

How fabulous are these shots from

Sergio? How do you describe your

I really liked my shoot with Sergio, he

was great to work with and used subtle

techniques that most photographers d-

Amber Venz and Baxter Box have taken the question: “how can we monetize what the fashion world is already doing and make it beneficial for everyone involved?”, and answered with rewardStyle & Like to Know. By creating an invite only program of publishers they have allowed everyone to like, and then know.

Starting from the source, former personal stylist Amber’s own blog VENZedits, is where she first realized that she was giving her clients all of her style secrets without reaping any benefit or the usual com-mission that come with that sort of gig. So she decided to find a way to get all of her advertisers in one place & get smart about this blogging business. So add in Baxter, the tech side of the business, and voila: rewardStyle is born.

Amber can often be quoted as giving advice along the lines of, if you have an idea, follow it, pursue it, and embark on the adventure. Amber has been a part of many realms of the fashion industry locally in Dallas & globally (rewardStyle now has offices in London) with D Maga-zine’s top jewelry designer in Dallas as a credential as well as experience in styling. With her resume, drive, and pas-sion for connecting and uniting fashion and technology, now we all have the luxury of liking, knowing & then get-ting our hands on some gorgeous garments.
