SUCCESS STORY FOR SETTLEMENT GRANTS PROGRAM (SGP)JULY 2008 - MARCH 2009
Since the Cambodian Association of Victoria (CAV) commenced work on the Settlement GrantsProgram (SOP) things have been very busy indeed, The program aims to work with and supportpeople who have migrated to Australia recently, within the last five years. This program involves theCAV working with many newly arrived Cambodian people, in Springvale and surrounding areas, tohelp them with settling into their new lives in Australia.
This work is done in many ways, working with new migrants to orientate them to Australia by-providing information, advice and referral services. Integration into a new country and newcommunity is also a focus of the Program. The CAV works to provide its members with educationsessions, sporting and social group activities to support new migrants to be included and to participate'in the local and wider communities. By forging new and lasting friendships within the Cambodiancommunity new migrants are able to nurture their cultural heritage while embracing the new andexciting aspects of their lives in Australia.
A large number of eligible people have been registeredwith the CAV to receive assistance via the SettlementGrants Program. Last year the CAV went through theprocess of applying for the Settlement Grants Program forthe first time. It was estimated that in a 12 month periodapproximately 80 newly migrated people would receiveassistance from the CAV via the SGP. This number wasgreatly underestimated, with 80 eligible people alreadycoming through the CAV doors for assistance in the first 3months of the program commencing!
This large number of people visiting the CAV officeregularly has lead to a very busy start to the Program. Staffhave worked very closely with the CAV/ SGP clients.Much time has been spent with these clients workingthrough a variety of Settlement issues and concerns.Clients have contacted the CAV by phone or visited theoffice in person to seek help and support. Staff havesupported clients with a variety of Migration RelatedClient Services and Document Help, among a large variety
of other issues.

One of the most common areas where SGP clients rmesought CAV support and assistance is in the area ofDomestic Violence. This issue is of growing concern
within the Community, \sith many clients comingforward to seek help, information and support in recentmonths. The CAV stall have worked closely with clientsin this area and given them somewhere to turn for he lp .Staff has provided valuable listening and support in asafe environment. They have also provided importantinformation, such as information about the laws inAustralia, and advice on what action can he taken toimprove or resolve a difficult situation.
Information Session on Domestic Violence, Immigrationand Law (December 2008)
The CAV provides many, many people with much support and assistance every day. With the SGP. thenumbers of clients coming through the door for support with the Program are recorded lor statistical purposes. While it is only the number of SGP clients that are recorded, it starts to give a better idea of just how muchimportant work the CAV does every day. The number of CAV clients both in general and on the Program isincreasing all the time, and will lead to an even busier year in 2009. Below are the statistics of clients whoreceived services from CAV within the period of 01 July 2008 23 March 2009:
178 Clients received services from CAV
• The services included immigration related client services, financial support, document help.police or court, citizenship, driving, family violence, passport, centre facilities, education andtraining, employment, family and relationship, home tutoring, household management, legal and
transportation.• Among them, there have been 121 being referred to other service providers such as: DIAC.

VOLUNTEER IMPRESSION TO CAV
Volunteer Profile - Annie Boulton
Hi, my name is Annie Boulton. I am 30 years old. I live in Brunswick, which is northof Melbourne, a far way from Springvale! I have a dog that I love very much, although he is very naught}'!
I work as a nurse in the community, driving all around inner Melbourne. I work withpeople with HIV/AIDS, I visit them at their homes, to help and support them withtheir general health and coping. I am very lucky that I love my job very much!
Last year, in August, I went to Cambodia for the first time. I had never met anyCambodian people before and I did not know much about Cambodia, except about theterrible 'killing fields'.
I found Cambodia to be the most beautiful and interesting country and the people tobe so kind and friendly and cheerful, despite their poor and difficult living conditions.I loved driving through the country side, seeing the style of houses built up high offthe ground! I was very lucky to travel to Angkor Watt to see the magical temples andplaces from another time and place in history.
When I came back home to Melbourne, I decided that I wanted to meet moreCambodian people and help them in some way if I could. I looked into the Cambodiancommunity living in Melbourne, and I found out about the CAV.
I started coming to the CAV in about November, once a week for a couple of hours,to volunteer and help out where I could. In this time I have met many new people andhave helped with many different things, such as helping with an application for agovernment grant, to hopefully get some more money for CAV to be able to help itsmembers!
I have really enjoyed coming to the CAV so far, and I look forwau) to continuing myvisits to the CAV and helping out some more in the future! Thanks for having me!
