Why?• The United States military and

economic power was strong enough to stop Hitler and Mussolini, but failure to do so fueled Hitler’s, Mussolini’s, and Japan’s conquests for power.

• Knowing that the U.S. would not stop all three continued to conquer other nations

Why?• All three Axis power’s believed their country

was superior to other’s and therefore had a right to conquer other nations.

• World domination became their goal• Aryan German’s believed they were superior

to others• If Hitler had only persecuted German Jews,

nations probably would have ignored him, but killing other nation’s Jews was a whole other story

Why?• Militaristic – glorified the army, built up their

weapons, solve problems through war, influence of military in govt.

• Nationalistic – believed superior to other nations and had a right to conquer them

• Totalitarian – controlled all aspects of citizens lives limiting rights and requiring citizens to obey they leader

• The depression and use of propaganda allowed for strong leaders to take control who promised to solve the countries problems

Why?• The league of nations was unwilling to

take actions to stop aggression• The U.S. didn’t join leaving the league

weakened• The Axis power’s knew the LON was

not willing to go to war against them, so they just withdrew from the league and continued the aggressive actions.

Why?• France and Great Britain gave into

Hitler to keep peace and avoid war.• Hitler knew they were unwilling to go

to war, so he had the advantage.• Appeasement fueled his power for

conquest knowing that no one would step in to stop him.
