Dealing with inappropriate

behavior

Page 10: Causes of pupil misbehavior Classroom-related issues Classroom-related issues Personal issues Personal issues Social issues Social issues.

-The teacher should ask the pupil to stop the inappropriate behavior . The teacher should maintain contact with the pupil until the behavior has ceased .

-the teacher needs to remind the pupil of what the appropriate behavior is.

-The teacher should make eye contact with the pupil until appropriate behavior return .

-The teacher may need to ask the pupil to explain the correct behavior to him/herself. If the pupil doesn't understand , s/he should be provided feedback .

-The teacher needs to impose the penalty for breaking the rule . This will usually consist of performing the procedure until it is done correctly . however when the pupil understands what s/he needs to do but is doing it incorrectly on purpose , the teacher can use some mild form of punishment , such as withholding privileges

-Often, off-task behavior occurs when pupil are doing repetitive, boring task which they have already mastered. Varying activities , for example by going from seatwork to interactive teaching or by going on to another type of exercise or another topic, can refocus pupils on the lesson .

Another model for dealing with misbehavior is the LEAST model , which suggests five steps for dealing with desist behaviors :

1.Leave it alone. ıf the behavior is not going to become troublesome , leave it alone.

2.End the action indirectly. This can be done by distracting the pupil from her/his misbehavior through giving him/her something else to do .

3.Attend more fully . Teachers should try to get to know pupils, so they can get to the heart of the problem. Has s/he got problems at home? Is s/he being bullied? Does s/he have learning difficulties etc.? This will help the teacher decide what to do .

4. spell out directions. Remind the pupil of what he or she should be doing and , if necessary, warn her/him of the consequences of not complying.

5. Track the behavior. If there appears to be a recurring problem with misbehavior of one or more pupils , it is useful to keep systematic records of the behavior, by using pupil tracking records for example

To sum up you know that what is causes misbehavior ; outside school , such as pupil's psychological development, and in the school and classroom factors such as boring , irrelevant lessons and curriculum or overly lax or authoritarian rules. When misbehavior occurs , the teacher should not ovverreact to minor misbehavior. Also teacher can help nip problems in the bud. Effective ways of correcting behavior is the use of rewards and punishment but should not be overused.
