A recent study conducted by the HEAL Foundation and Breathe Blue, shows that four out of every 10 children in the Capital suffer from severe lung problems and Delhi kids have the weakest lungs across Indian metros. The study evaluates the lung health of schoolchildren across metro cities in order to understand people’s perceptions about air pollution. The survey released on the eve of World Asthma Day on Monday . The survey , covering 2,000 kids in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata, shared that increasing air pollution in metro cities was one the main causes and the effects could be heart disease, lung cancer, both chronic and acute respiratory dis eases, including asthma. The survey , which was conducted by the Breathe Blue and Heal Foundation, graded children’s lung function as excellent, good, satisfactory, bad and poor based on various international scales. Delhi’s children fared the worst, with 40% having compromised lung function: 21% had poor lung function and another 14% bad lung function. Mumbai’s children fared the best with 73% of the surveyed children having good lung function. Of the remaining, 13% children had bad and 14% had poor lung function. In Bangalore and Kolkata, the affected student percentages stood at 36% and 35% respectively . The Breathe Blue survey says about 35 per cent of school-going children fared badly in the Lung Health Screening Test (LHST), indicating poor air quality across India. “The LHST determines how much air the lungs can hold, how quickly one can move air in and out of his/her lungs, and how well the lungs take in oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the body. The tests can detect lung diseases and measure the severity,” Dr Preetaish Kaul, representative of the HEAL Foundation Causes of Poor Lung conditions: 1. A recent study conducted by the HEAL Foundation and Breathe Blue, shows that four out of every 10 children in the
