Excavated ancient ruins in Northern Greece

Transitioned my focus from Archaeology to Industrial Design

Moved to San Francisco to attend CCA

Currently pursuing my BA in Industrial Design

Moved to Portland, OR on a whim

Hello, my name is

Cat Lam

I am currently a third year design student at CCA in San Francisco. I previously had training as a student of archaeology and cultu-ral anthropology. I believe the study of behavior inhe-rently shapes the cultures we create around objects. My passions include the outdoors and collecting artifacts pertaining to natural history.

Design a water filtration device to aid in obtaining potable water during an emergency hurricane situation.

15 week solo project research / sketching / storytelling / material consideration / prototyping

PROJECT BRIEF

Page 7: Catlam portfolio

Hurricanes are spiraling tropical storms with wind speeds of over 160 miles per hour. They disperse more than 2.4 trillion gallons of rain daily.

None of this water is drinkable.

Page 8: Catlam portfolio

DISCOVERY

“Electricity is usually down for at least 3 to 5 days. Unfortunately we don’t have a generator.”

Hurricane Andrew

Hurricane Sandy“Gallons of what? I ‘m not really properly informed on natural disaster prep.”

“I had evacuated during the storm, but when we were allowed back into the city two weeks later, we couldn’t drink the tap water. “

Hurricane Katrina

Page 9: Catlam portfolio

Currently, bottled water is usually delivered to the site after the fact. This is both costly and inefficient.

How can we design a solution that will empower communities to utilize the surplus of water that is already there?

Page 10: Catlam portfolio

Pros:simple and safe kills majority of bacteria and other microbes

Cons:requires reliable heat source, time consuming volume is dictated by size of the container

Pros:most tried and true methodlarge range of products offer portability and easy storage solutions

Cons:level of contamination dictates the complexity of filter, so one could assumably purchase the wrong kind of filter

Pros:covers all bases of treating drinking water

Cons:requires set up and multiple pieces of equipment such as a heat source, a pot, and steel tubing

Pros:kills most viruses, bacteria, and protozoa with short wave UV light

Cons:are oftentimes more expensive than other options due to the technology and parts

Boiling Filtration Forward Osmosis Ultraviolet LightDistillation

NEW TECHNOLOGY

Pros:can be dropped into any contaminated water source

provides essential nutrients and live saving electrolytes

can be delivered more efficiently than conventional bottled water

uses a natural process to filter water, much like how plants absorb clean water through their roots

nomamobile payment for tolls and parking

Page 42: Catlam portfolio

What are some of the problems with the current Fastrak system?

no visual assurance

no interaction with object

EXISTING SYSTEMS

Page 43: Catlam portfolio

San Francisco has already begun to adopt an all electronic toll system on the Golden Gate Bridge.

However, the Bay Bridge still accepts cash in specified lanes - which often experience more congestion.

How can we streamline the process of paying the toll and parking once in the city?

Page 44: Catlam portfolio

INSIGHTS

“My battery died without me knowing. Then I got a bunch of tickets. They didn’t replace my FasTrak, they just made me register my plates. I didn’t know I had to pay more each time I crossed the bridge. They didn’t tell me that.” - Amber, 26 Richmond, CA

“It’s such a hassle driving through the bridge from out of town. Why do I have to prepay ahead of time or remember to send in a payment afterwards? ” - Matt, 27 Los Angeles, CA

“It’s an ugly thing just sitting on your dashboard” - Cale, 23 Oakland, CA

SKETCHING

Communication is key.

The archaeologist William H. Marquardt once said “archaeology is fascinating to people when it is com-municated to them in plain language.” As a designer, I strive to communicate visually in a concise manner.
