    CatholicExorcismsshouldonlybeperformedbytrainedpriests,andeachandeverycasehastobeauthorizedinadvancebythelocalBishop.ThepriestshouldneverbealoneduringtheexorcismandshouldbearmedwithHolyWater,aCrucifix,RelicsoftheSaintsandtheRitesOfExorcism.

    SincetheSecondVaticanCouncilin1959,everyriteofsacraments,blessingsandeventheMasshasbeenchanged.TheRiteofExorcismwasoneofthelasttoberevisedin1999.The1614ExorcismRite(DeexorcizandisobsessisadaemoniointheRitualeRomanum)wasrevisedinJanuary1999(Deexorcismisetsupplicationibusquibusdam,asitisnowknown).ThereisongoingdebateandsometraditionalCatholicsfeelthattheritehasbeen‘watereddown’whileothersmaintainthatitisthesameinitsessentials.Thenewritesforbidexorcismsonpeoplewhoarebelievedtohavebeensubjectedtoevilspells/cursesand/orarementallyill.Athoroughmedicalexaminationisessential.WepresenthereboththeEnglishtranslationofboththetraditionalandrevisedritesofexorcism.

    1.Apriest-onewhoisexpresslyandinspecialwise(particularly)authorizedbytheOrdinary-whenheintendstoperformanexorcismoverpersonstormentedbythedevil,mustbeproperlydistinguishedforhispiety,prudence,andintegrityoflife.Heshouldfulfilthisdevoutundertakinginallconstancyandhumility,beingutterlyimmunetoanystrivingforhumanaggrandizement,andrelying,notonhisown,butonthedivinepower.Moreover,heoughttobeofmatureyears,andreverednotaloneforhisofficebutforhismoralqualities.2.Inordertoexercisehisministryrightly,heshouldresorttoagreatdealmorestudyofthematter(whichhastobepassedoverhereforthesakeofbrevity),byexaminingapprovedauthorsandcasesfromexperience;ontheotherhand,lethimcarefullyobservethefewmoreimportantpointsenumeratedhere.3.Especially,heshouldnotbelievetooreadilythatapersonispossessedbyanevilspirit;butheoughttoascertainthesignsbywhichapersonpossessedcanbedistinguishedfromonewhoissufferingfrommelancholyorsomeotherillness(especiallyoneofapsychologicalnature).Signsofpossessionare(maybe)thefollowing:abilitytospeakwithsomefacilityinastrangetongueortounderstanditwhenspokenbyanother;thefacultyofdivulgingfutureandhiddenevents;displayofpowerswhicharebeyondthesubject'sageandnaturalcondition;andvariousotherindicationswhich,whentakentogetherasawhole,

  • builduptheevidence.4.Inordertounderstandthesemattersbetter,lethiminquireofthepersonpossessed,followingupononeortheotheractofexorcism,whatthelatterexperiencedinhisbodyorsoulwhiletheexorcismwasbeingperformed,andtolearnalsowhatparticularwordsintheformhadamoreintimidatingeffectuponthedevil,sothathereafterthesewordsmaybeemployedwithgreaterstressandfrequency.5.Hewillbeonhisguardagainsttheartsandsubterfugeswhichtheevilspiritsarewonttouseindeceivingtheexorcist.Foroftentimestheygivedeceptiveanswersandmakeitdifficulttounderstandthem,sothattheexorcistmighttireandgiveup,orsoitmightappearthattheafflictedoneisinnowisepossessedbythedevil.6.Onceinawhile,aftertheyarealreadyrecognized,theyconcealthemselvesandleavethebodypracticallyfreefromeverymolestation,sothatthevictimbelieveshimselfcompletelydelivered.Yettheexorcistmaynotdesistuntilheseesthesignsofdeliverance.7.Attimes,moreover,theevilspiritsplacewhateverobstaclestheycanintheway,sothatthepatientmaynotsubmittoexorcism,ortheytrytoconvincehimthathisafflictionisanaturalone.Meanwhile,duringtheexorcismtheycausehimtofallasleep,anddanglesomeillusionbeforehim,whiletheysecludethemselves,sothattheafflictedoneappearstobefreed.8.Somerevealacrimewhichhasbeencommittedandtheperpetratorsthereof,aswellasthemeansofputtinganendtoit.YettheafflictedpersonmustbewareofhavingrecourseonthisaccounttosorcerersornecromancersortoanypartiesexcepttheministersoftheChurch,orofmakinguseofanysuperstition,nayanysortofforbiddenpractice.9.Sometimesthedevilwillleavethepossessedpersoninpeace`andevenallowhimtoreceivetheHolyEucharist,tomakeitappearthathehasdeparted.Infact,theartsandfraudsoftheevilonefordeceivingamanareinnumerable.Forthisreasontheexorcistmustbeonhisguard,lesthefallintothistrap.10.

  • Wherefore,hewillbemindfulofthewordsofourLord(Matt.17.20),totheeffectthatthereisacertaintypeofevilspiritwhocannotbedrivenoutexceptbyprayerandfasting.Therefore,lethimavailhimselfofthesetwomeansaboveallforimploringthedivineassistanceinexpellingdemons,aftertheexampleoftheholyfathers;andnotonlyhimself,butlethiminduceothers,asfaraspossible,todothesame.11.Ifitcanbedoneconvenientlythepossessedpersonshouldbeledtochurchortosomeothersacredandworthyplace,wheretheexorcismwillbeheld,awayfromthecrowd.Butifthepersonisill,orforanyvalidreason,theexorcismmaytakeplaceinaprivatehome.12.Thesubject,ifingoodmentalandphysicalhealth,shouldbeexhortedtoimploreGod'shelp,tofast,andtofortifyhimselfbyfrequentreceptionofpenanceandHolyCommunion,atthediscretionofthepriest.Andinthecourseoftheexorcismheshouldbefullyrecollected,withhisintentionfixedonGod,whomheshouldentreatwithfirmfaithandinallhumility.Andifheisallthemoregrievouslytormented,heoughttobearthispatiently,neverdoubtingthedivineassistance.13.Heoughttohaveacrucifixathandorsomewhereinsight.Ifrelicsofthesaintsareavailable,theyaretobeappliedinareverentwaytothebreastortheheadofthepersonpossessed(therelicsmustbeproperlyandsecurelyencasedandcovered).Onewillseetoitthatthesesacredobjectsarenottreatedimproperlyorthatnoinjuryisdonethembytheevilspirit.However,oneshouldnotholdtheHolyEucharistovertheheadofthepersonnorinanywayapplyIttohisbody,owingtothedangerofdesecration.14.Theexorcistmustnotdigressintosenselessprattlenorasksuperfluousquestionsorsuchasarepromptedbycuriosity,particularlyiftheypertaintofutureandhiddenmatters,allofwhichhavenothingtodowithhisoffice.Instead,hewillbidtheuncleanspiritkeepsilenceandansweronlywhenasked.Neitheroughthetogiveanycredencetothedevilifthelattermaintainsthatheisthespiritofsomesaintorofadeceasedparty,orevenclaimstobeagoodangel.15.Butnecessaryquestionsare,forexample:aboutthenumberandnameofthespiritsinhabitingthepatient,thetimewhentheyenteredintohim,thecause

  • thereof,andsuchlike.Asforalljesting,laughing,andnonsenseonthepartoftheevilspirit--theexorcistshouldpreventitorcontemnit,andhewillexhortthebystanders(whosenumbermustbeverylimited)topaynoattentiontosuchgoingson;neitheraretheytoputanyquestiontothesubject.RathertheyshouldintercedeforhimtoGodinallhumilityandurgency.16.Letthepriestpronouncetheexorcisminacommandingandauthoritativevoice,andatthesametimewithgreatconfidence,humility,andfervour;andwhenheseesthatthespiritissorelyvexed,thenheoppressesandthreatensallthemore.Ifhenoticesthatthepersonafflictedisexperiencingadisturbanceinsomepartofhisbodyoranacutepainoraswellingappearsinsomepart,hetracesthesignoftheCrossoverthatplaceandsprinklesitwithholywater,whichhemusthaveathandforthispurpose.17.Hewillpayattentionastowhatwordsinparticularcausetheevilspiritstotremble,repeatingthemthemorefrequently.Andwhenhecomestoathreateningexpression,herecurstoitagainandagain,alwaysincreasingthepunishment.Ifheperceivesthatheismakingprogress,lethimpersistfortwo,three,fourhours,andlongerifhecan,untilvictoryisattained.18.Theexorcistshouldguardagainstgivingorrecommendinganymedicinetothepatient,butshouldleavethiscaretophysicians.19.Whileperformingtheexorcismoverawoman,heoughtalwaystohaveassistinghimseveralwomenofgoodrepute,whowillholdontothepersonwhensheisharassedbytheevilspirit.Theseassistantsoughtifpossibletobecloserelativesofthesubject,andforthesakeofdecencytheexorcistwillavoidsayingordoinganythingwhichmightproveanoccasionofevilthoughtstohimselfortotheothers.20.DuringtheexorcismheshallpreferablyemploywordsfromHolyWrit,ratherthanformsofhisownorofsomeoneelse.Heshall,moreover,commandthedeviltotellwhetherheisdetainedinthatbodybynecromancy,byevilsignsoramulets;andiftheonepossessedhastakenthelatterbymouth,heshouldbemadetovomitthem(theexorcistalwaysbeingconsciousofthepotentialrequirementthisbedonebyacompetentphysician);ifhehasthemconcealedonhisperson,heshouldexposethem;andwhendiscoveredtheymustbeburned.

  • Moreover,thepersonshouldbeexhortedtorevealallhistemptationstotheexorcist.21.Finally,afterthepossessedonehasbeenfreed,lethimbeadmonishedtoguardhimselfcarefullyagainstfallingintosin,soastoaffordnoopportunitytotheevilspiritofreturning,lestthelaststateofthatmanbecomeworsethantheformer.

    CAUTIONSANDADDITIONALSUGGESTIONS

    TOTHEEXORCIST

    A.Theexorcistshouldbepreparedtohavethedemonrevealtheexorcist’ssins,especiallythosewhichhehasforgottenandnotconfessedandthoseforwhichhehasnotreceivedabsolution.Itthereforeisprudentthattheexorcistconfessandreceiveabsolutionimmediatelypriortoeachexorcismsession,butnotmerelytoavoidembarrassment,butprimarilytoprotecthisownimmortalsoul.B.Forthispurposeandalsoforhisownprotectionandassistance,especiallyshouldthedemonbeexceptionallyviolent,ifavailable,anotherpriestshouldassisttheexorcist,withitbeingclearandcertainwhichistheexorcistorlead,andwhichistheassistant.C.IftheexorcismistotakeplacenotinthechurchorotherplacewheretheHolyEucharistispresent,itispermittedandadvisedthattheexorcistcarryItproperlysecured(inapyx)onhispersonorplaceItinaplaceofreverencewheretheexorcismtakesplace,alwaysmindfulofItssafety.D.WhentracingthesignoftheCrossonthepersonafflicteditisnotnecessarythatHolyOil(Chrism)beused,thoughitsuseoftenisprudentoradvisable.E.

  • Besuretoknowthefull,propernameoftheonethoughttobepossessed,aswellasanyfamiliarnamesbywhichthepersoniscalled.Insomeinstancesitismorepropertousebuttheproperfirstname,othersthefullname,orthefirstandlastname,andeventousethefullpropernamefollowedbyastatementofthefamiliarname,e.g.:N.JonathanWestphaltSmithson,whomweoftencallJohn.F.TheExorcistshouldreadtheritualtobeusedpriortousingit.Notjustanhourbefore,butatleastseveralhoursprior,atandinatime,place,andsituationwherehewillbeatpeace,inaprayerfulmanner,notskimmingorcursorilybutcontemplativelyandstudiously.
