School NewsA word from the Principal

Last week, we celebrated Catholic Education Week. Maybe you saw the pictures on our Facebook page? One highlight had to be our CEW Winter Feast. All of you would be aware that it is one time per year where we sit down together to recognise how fortunate we are to be members of our Catholic school community.

There is something special about the inclusive nature of meals. It’s pretty normal to spend that time with friends who share our interests. But sometimes we can be placed in situations where we are not placed next to people with whom we normally socialise. Does that make us feel uncomfortable, pushed outside our comfort zones? In fact, Jesus calls us to expand our circle of friends. Why? Because many people need our company. Meals were huge in Jesus’ ministry. He brought outcasts to meals with people of honour. He ate in the homes of people considered sinners. His meals revealed God’s Reign – where everyone has a place around the table. He tells his followers to stop worrying about whether their seat allocation proves they’re honourable. He asks them to welcome outcasts to their meals and into their lives. What does that mean for us? Reach out! In our community, all of us are challenged to ‘eat’ with those who are isolated and alone. At times, each school can have students that feel a sense of being friendless. We challenge our students to seek these people out. From an adult perspective, how can we welcome others into our circle of friends? Even each town can have nursing homes with lonely people. That’s why our students visit Emmerton Park at times. Let’s break down isolation in our community and honour the people others forget.

Last week really affirmed the inclusive nature of our school community. Don't go changing!

Best Wishes for a great week,

Gregg Sharman Principal

Congratulations Father Phil McCormack Recently, Fr Phil McCormack celebrated 45 years a priest. This is a remarkable effort and was celebrated a fortnight ago after Mass on Sunday. We give thanks to Fr Phil, for his service to our church and communities in Tasmania.

Fr Phil will take annual leave on 11 October for a month. This will be a well-earned break for our priest! Maybe time for reflection on a Sydney Swans premiership?

Weekly Diary Check We are asking that families are regularly checking diaries, particularly Thursday nights at the end of each week.

Baby News Congratulations to Amelia and Joe Coombs on the arrival of their son, Macklen Joseph born on 10th August weighing 8lb 12oz. We look forward to meeting Macklen and wish them all the best for this very exciting time of their life.

Grade 1 Excursion to Emmerton Park On Wednesday 10th of August, Mrs Lardner’s Grade One class went on an excursion to Emmerton Park. Prior to their excursion, students put together some questions that they wanted to ask the elderly about when they were at school and what it was like. While at Emmerton Park the Grade One students got to sit down with the elderly and ask their questions and they were also given a tour of the whole facility.

Olympic Disco Thank you to the P&F for organising this event which was a great success. It was fantastic to see all the students dress up and get in the Olympic Spirit.

Thank you to all of the families who came along to make it a fun night enjoyed by all.

Prep and Grade One Excursion Last Friday both the Prep and Grade One classes went on an excursion to the Post Office and Sadie’s. While at the Post Office both classes got a tour of the whole store. The Grade One class got to send their own letters to a fellow class member and were able to see where they went once placed in the shoot. While at Sadie’s the students got to sit down to their choice of food and a milkshake, which was enjoyed by all.

Archbishop’s Visit 2016 His Grace, Archbishop Julian Porteous attended Mass on Sunday, confirming five of our students. Thanks to Robyn and Gerry McMahon for the preparation of the candidates, Asha and Austin Howard, Zarna Oll ington, Alexis Donovan and Tanar Draper. Special thanks also to the Parish for their overall support and encouragement.

Feast Day As a part of the Catholic Education Week celebrations we held our annual CEW Winter Feast Day. Tables were set out in the Octagon, seating everyone to eat lunch together. Students sat in their class groups as they ate a nourishing home cooked meal, made from fresh produce.

Special thanks must go to all that were involved in the setting up for the day, preparation of the food and also those who helped cook and serve the Whole School community. Your help is greatly appreciated and special events like these would not be able to go ahead without you generously giving up your time. A special thank you to Mr David Plaza and Mr Stuart Smith for organising the fresh produce and cooking all of the meat. Also a shout out to the Teacher Assistants and the Parents and Friends that contributed throughout the day.

Winter Sports Last Wednesday, 17th August, the Grade Five and Six Students participated in the third and final week of the Winter Sports program. A great job to all students for participating with a positive attitude.

Mini Olympics During Catholic Education Week, a Mini Olympics was held here at School. Students were split into their house groups and got to participate in a range of activities throughout the day. Kinder to Grade Two took part in weightlifting, sack race and relay sprints. Grades Three to Six participated in basketball, 3 legged race and relay sprints.

Great job to all students who participated throughout the day. Also a big thank you to all who came to help staff run the activities during the day.

The excursion was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Emergency Practice Before November we will hold an unannounced emergency practice with staff & students, to test our responses of going into lockdown (opposite to evacuation). This will occur during recess or lunchtime.Like for fire evacuation, we recognised the worth to test processes. We have plans in place to make this practice as least disruptive to students as able. And it will be apparent that this is only a practice – not a real lockdown. If you have queries you can call our Safety Officer, Simon Natoli on 0400 105 476

Grade Four, Five and Six Health and Recreation On Friday 26th August students in Grades Four, Five and Six will be given the opportunity to take part in either Netball, Football or preparing the school garden for the growing season. Both the football and netball will be played against the Circular Head Christian School, with the football being played here at school and the netball will be played at the Netball Courts in Havelock Street.
