Welcome back to term 4! What a busy but exciting term this will be. Both Camille and I are taking on new roles
this term, and are looking forward to this challenge!
Prac Teacher: This term we welcome Sarah Borg and April Lemon who will be working with IC and 2F for the
next four weeks. Welcome to McAuley Sarah and April. We hope your time with us is both exciting and
rewarding.
Kinder 2019 Orientation: We begin our Kinder 2019 Orientation next Thursday 25th October, with a Parent
Information meeting in Kenna Hall at 6.30pm, followed on Friday 26th October with the first of our three sessions
with our Kinder students for 2019. While our ‘new’ Kinders are in the classroom, our Year 6 students will be
working with our current Kinders. Thank you so much to our Year 6 students and teachers for their wonderful
generosity.
School Summer Uniform: Now that we are in Term 4, students are moving into their Summer Uniform. Over
the next week students have the option to wear either summer or winter uniform, but regardless of which uniform
is worn, students are expected to wear the complete uniform, not a combination of uniforms. Also, the summer
uniform comes complete with the school hat. Hats are to be worn each time students are outside. Even though
we are still experiencing cool days, our risk from the sun is increasing, therefore beginning this week, students
will be expected to wear their hats. If students forget their hat, they will have to sit in designated shade areas
during playtime. Please remind your children to bring their hats to school and wear them each day.
Year 6 excursion to Canberra: This will be a very busy term for Year 6, beginning with their excursion to
Canberra on 1st & 2nd November. It is a big responsibility to take nearly 80 children away over night. There is a
very high behaviour expectation placed on all Year 6 children as they represent our school in our Nation’s
Capital.
This is both a wonderful experience and great privilege. Thank you to our Year 6 teachers and Mr Croke who
will be giving up their own time to accompany these students.
OSCH at McAuley: Last term we were very fortunate to start our OSCH facility for school students Out of
School Hours. This facility runs from our Sacred Heart Campus in Byng Street. It has continued to grow in
numbers and is open to all primary school students in Orange. The relaxed setting, great afternoon tea, option of
outdoor and indoor play has seen all children attending this facility, happy and engaged. Thank you to Amy and
Renai from Centacare for all their work in running this wonderful service. After school care is currently on offer
from 3:00pm – 6:00pm Monday to Friday, and before school care from 7:00am - 9:00am. For any information on
McAuley OSCH please call Amy or Renai on 0439 631 686.
Be Respectful Be Responsible Be Safe
ICAS tests: Congratulations to the following students who received recognition for their achievements in the
ICAS English Test, which they sat recently.
This is an outstanding achievement and we congratulate all of our students who sat these tests.
Arriving Late: It is an expectation at McAuley that students will arrive at school before the first bell at 8.55am.
Supervision in the playground commences at 8.35am, with students arriving at school prior to this time expected
to move to the seating area outside the staffroom and remain seated until supervision begins. Should students
arrive late for school, they need to report to the School Office before going to class. Please be respectful of the
limited time we have with your children, and our need to make the most of the time we have with them by making
sure they are at school in time for the bell.
Focus of the Week
As the term has just begun, our focus at the moment is on wearing our uniform correctly and with pride. In
Summer, the boys do not have to tuck their shirts in, but it is important that we still maintain a tidy presence.
Please go over the school rules regarding jewellery, nail polish and hair ribbons and accessories with your
children so that while in the McAuley uniform, they represent our school proudly. PLEASE MAKE SURE
THAT ALL ITEMS THAT COME TO SCHOOL ARE LABELLED!! We appreciate the cost of uniform, lunch
boxes, etc, and are often dismayed at how many items end up in ‘lost property’ and are unable to be returned to
their owners. Have a wonderful week,
Robyn Petty

Mission Month
“Never think that you have nothing to offer, or that no-
body needs you. Many people need you. Think about it!
Each of you, think in your heart: many people need
me.” Pope Francis
Myanmar is located in Southeast Asia with around one
quarter of its population estimated to be living below
the poverty line. Active conflict zones exist in parts of
the country. Ongoing ethnic and religious violence has
intensified since 2012, culminating in the tragic
displacement of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya
refugees from the country.
The high incidence of poverty is exacerbated by barriers
to education, and has contributed to adverse health
outcomes.
Catholic Mission supports the Catholic Church in
Myanmar in a number of ways, including funding,
missionary collaboration and providing expertise in
sustainability. The Church in Myanmar has a strong
focus on education as the key to moving forward, and is
engaged in a range of education specific projects.
This year we unite again with Catholic Mission to raise
both awareness and money for those less fortunate than
ourselves during World Mission Month.
Over the next two weeks students will be learning
about, praying and raising money for the children of
Myanmar. They will also have the opportunity to learn
about how others live out their call to be missionary
disciples in our world.
If you wish for your child to participate in the
fundraising activities in Week 2 then please send the
donation amount listed below ($3 in total for all
activities), to your child’s classroom teacher before
Monday 22nd October.
The non perishable recess food items will be
collected before recess on Tuesday 23rd October for
our Deny and Donate day.
The money for the Fun Day (20c pieces) will not be
collected but should be brought in on the day
(Wednesday 24th October) and kept in a small purse
or zip lock bag (students will be responsible for their
own money to be used at the stalls).

The Dish
Year 5 had a lovely day at “The Dish” in
Parkes. The weather was warm and the dish
was huge and amazing. The 3D information
movies were awesome and the scavenger hunt
for clues around the information centre was
interesting and insightful. All in all a great day
had by all.

The Secrets to Savvy Snacking!
It’s certainly no secret that our kids are constantly growing…. and depending upon their growth cycles (and of course, their daily activity levels), it’s natural for them to experience fluctuations in their appetites as well.
Whilst some of us parents may have grown up in an era when snacks were labelled as ‘bad’, and we were told to avoid them at all cost, snacks can in actual fact, be used really effectively to:
Support nutritional requirements during growth spurts (including pregnancy),
Supplement ‘nutritional gaps’ in the standard daily eating pattern, and
Assist in the maintenance of a healthy body composition (ratio of lean muscle tissue to body fat).
Although the (very) occasional lolly, biscuit or packet of chips is not a major problem, healthier options are a far better way to go…. so consider these strategies:
Plan and portion out daily snacks rather than just grabbing something cheap and/or convenient when you’re already hungry,
Select foods high in nutritional value,
Ensure energy input aligns to activity output,
Try to include protein where possible,
Try to keep fresh fruit visibly positioned (as a healthy snack reminder),
Try making healthy snacks such as muffins and muesli bars,
Limit highly processed foods, particularly when high in refined sugars
Also try to establish some snacking boundaries with your children, such as:
Teaching them to ask for a snack rather than just helping themselves, Asking them to snack at the table, rather than in front of the TV, Eating snacks from a portion serving size container or bowl, rather than directly from the
packet.
Nourish yourself (and your kids) with savvy snack selections and your body (as well as your kids) will thank you for it!!
