THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Isaiah 61:1-3 RESPONSORIAL Psalm 23: 1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6, Marier

The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me; he revives my soul. He guides me along the right path, for the sake of his name. Though I should walk in the valley of the shadow of death, No evil would I fear, for you are with me. Your crook and your staff will give me comfort. You have prepared a table before me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil; my cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord’s own house shall I dwell for length of days unending. R/

SECOND READING Hebrews 5:1-10 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia, Mode II, Graduale Romanum

V. I AM THE good shepherd, says the Lord; I know my sheep and mine know me.

GOSPEL John 17:6, 14-19

THE RITE OF ORDINATION

CALLING AND PRESENTATION OF THE CANDIDATES

The priest is called by the Church to serve God’s people. The candidates respond, announcing their readiness and willingness to enter into the priesthood.

ELECTION BY THE BISHOP AND CONSENT OF THE PEOPLE

After the candidates have been presented, the Bishop elects them for ordination, with the people’s consent. Applause is an appropriate sign of approval. HOMILY

The Bishop speaks to the candidates and to all assembled about the offices and duties of the priest.

PROMISE OF THE ELECT

Each of the elect affirms his intention to serve in his office with clear conscience and prayerful spirit after the example of Jesus.

PROMISE OF OBEDIENCE

Since the priest serves under the authority of the Bishop,

the elect pledge obedience and respect to the Bishop and to his successors. LITANY OF SUPPLICATION Litany of the Saints

LAYING ON OF HANDS The gesture of laying on of hands can be found in most of the sacraments and in many other forms of prayer.

Here, together with the Prayer of Consecration, it forms the heart of the ordination. After the Bishop lays on hands, all priests present join in the prayerful gesture.
