Capital Campaign Begins by Ann Earley Cathedral Capital Campaign News phase would be Sacred Heart itself. Fr. Adam, with the help of Mr. German, then tried to canvas much of the Davenport Deanery for support and then, through the Catholic Messenger and Cathedral Sunday, reach the greater diocese. At this point, a date has not been established, though the hopes for breaking ground this Spring are very high. All are asked for their prayers and support to make this vision a reality and a blessing for the whole of the Davenport Diocesan Community!! When former pastor of Sacred Heart Cathedral, Msgr. Robert Gruss, was assigned as Bishop of the Diocese of Rapid City, South Dakota, this opened the Pastor/Rector position of the Cathedral of the Diocese of Davenport. Bishop Martin Amos had definite plans for the Cathedral and shared those plans with Fr. Rich Adam, then Pastor of the cluster parishes of Riverside, Richmond and Wellman. When Bishop Amos asked Fr. Adam to be the Pastor/Rector of Sacred Heart Cathedral, he had specific requests upon this assignment, primarily fine liturgies, good homilies - and - “there was some construction that needed to be done.” Having just finished two consecutive building projects at former parishes, it seemed a pattern was being established in Fr. Adam’s priestly career! Bishop Amos recited particularly needs of: Additional Bathrooms Handicapped Entrances A Gathering Space Diocesan / Parish Hall Thus began the incentive for a capital campaign that not only included the parish of Sacred Heart, but the entire diocese. Fr. Rich Adam began his assignment August 1 st of 2011 and it didn’t take long for him to realize the needs Bishop Amos spoke of were real. Parishioner Mark Miller, of Bracke, Hayes, Miller, Mahan Architects, met with Fr. Rich and shared previous plans for updating Sacred Heart Cathedral that had been ascertained for many years. Shortly after that meeting, Mark introduced the present architectural plans that seemed to accommodate Bishop Amos’ requests, to the tune of $5.5 million which, with the passing of time, is now $6 million. Ray German, a consultant of BMG Associates, was invited to assist in the campaign process, which began in the Spring of 2013. A cathedral campaign is a bit unique as it is more than a parish campaign, but a campaign for the entire diocese. Although Sacred Heart is a parish unto itself, it is also the home of the bishop, the seat of the diocese, the “Cathedral” for each member of the Davenport Diocese. It was ascertained the best way to introduce and execute such a campaign should be done in several phases and the first Inside this issue: Capital Campaign Begins 1 Cost Estimate 1 Phase I 2 Campaign’s First Contribution 2 New Co-Chairs 3 Liturgical Perspective 3 Cathedral Sunday 4 Special points of interest: Project begins 2011 $6M needed $4.4M secured to date Phase I included handicap-accessible East Entrance First donation by elderly parishioner Tiedje & Collins new Co-Chairs Liturgical advantages Cathedral Sunday, February 14 Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport, Iowa January, 2016 Volume 1, Issue 1 Preliminary Cost Estimate Phase 2 1-14-16 Diocesan/Parish Hall Addition -Gathering space, hall, kitchen, rest rooms $2, 951,900.00 -Lower level classrooms 2,712,800.00 -Porte-cochere 58,900.00 -Renovations to Cathedral 241,300.00 TOTAL PHASE 2 $5,964,900.00
