Let’s review the life cycle of a frog.

Now let’s explore the life cycle of a butterfly. Click on the butterfly below.

Fun Butterfly Fact: People who study or collect butterflies are called lepidopterists because butterflies are of the insect order Lepidoptera.

To show that you know the life cycles of the frog and the butterfly, you will make a foldable.

Step 1: Fold a piece of white or manila paper into four boxes.

Page 7: Caterpillars, Polliwogs, and All. Let’s review the life cycle of a frog. Fun Frog Fact: Did you know that a group of frogs is called an army?

Step 2: Draw and label the life cycle of a Monarch butterfly on one side of the paper and the life cycle of a frog on the back.

Step 3: Title your document "Life Cycles."

Now let’s discuss how the butterfly and frog have similar and different needs to survive.

Are these animals domesticated or wild?

Domesticated animals are raised by people for a purpose. Wild animals live in nature.

Use the index in your science textbook to find where you can read how frogs grow and change. Be ready to answer these questions:

•What word is used to describe the changes in a frog as it goes through its life cycle?

•Explain the shelter of a frog. •Do frogs keep all their inherited traits as they grow and change? Why?

Page 10: Caterpillars, Polliwogs, and All. Let’s review the life cycle of a frog. Fun Frog Fact: Did you know that a group of frogs is called an army?

In your Science notebook, draw and label the life cycle of a bird and the life cycle of a dog.

How are the human life cycle and animal life cycle connected?

What are some of the inherited traits that both get from the parents?

One more question:

Why are the interactions between people and animals in the natural world important?

Now think about the interactions between people and insects.

Page 13: Caterpillars, Polliwogs, and All. Let’s review the life cycle of a frog. Fun Frog Fact: Did you know that a group of frogs is called an army?

The silkworm, termite, and grub worm are examples of animal life cycles that people often interrupt to control the population of the insect.

Exterminators know about the life cycle of termites, grub worms, and other harmful insects so they can successfully extinguish the insect.  To get rid of termites, exterminators spray the worker termite during the adult stage, while grub worms need to be sprayed during the larva stage.

Workers who raise silkworms also have to know the life cycle of the insect.  A silkworm becomes valuable when it is in the larva stage and spins a cocoon.  The cocoon is made of a single silk thread about one mile long.

Hopefully you can see that it is easier to solve problems when there is an understanding of the life cycles of different animals.
