Island of the SunIsland of the SunCatania was one of the main centers of the Sicilian Vespers revolt (1282) against the House of Anjou, and was the seat of the incoronation of the new Aragonese king of Sicily, Peter I. In the early 15th century, Sicily was turned into a province of the larger Kingdom of Aragon and with the unification of Castile and Aragon (early 16th century) Sicily became part of the Spanish Empire. Catania was one of the vanguards of the movement for the Sicilian autonomy in the early 19th century. In 1434 King Alfonso V founded here the Siciliae Studium Generale, the oldest university in the island.
There is a little Italian proverb that said:" Palermo grandeza, Catania belleza." This proverb purported that Palermo have the larger City, but Catania the beauty of Sicily.
UNESCO World Heritage Site, representing "the final flowering of baroque art in Europe.”
Catania
Piazza Duomo is the heart of Catania, with the city’s symbol monument: the fountain with the Elephant. The city’s cathedral with the Chapel of Sant’Agata looks out onto this square, where precious treasures are kept. There is also Palazzo degli Elefanti which is the City Hall. One of Catania’s most interesting roads starts from Piazza Duomo - Via Etnea, where there are splendid Baroque buildings with lava dust façades and a multitude of shops and confectioners.
The Elephant, symbol of the city of Catania since 1239, is located in the center of Piazza Duomo. This is a lava-stone statue that dates back to the Roman era, mounted on a more modern structure by Vaccarini from the eighteenth century. Legend goes that this animal became the city symbol because in ancient times pigmy elephants lived in this place, that protected the city’s inhabitants by chasing away fierce animals.

Palazzo degli Elefanti - (Elephant’s Palace) currently houses the city’s town hall.
Palatul Elefanţilor (Palazzo degli Elefanti) adăposteşte Primăria oraşului.
The construction of the Elephant’s Palace (The City Town Hall) began after the earthquake of 1693, and is square-shaped with a large courtyard and porticos on two sides.

Moving from Piazza Duomo through Porta Uzeda, it is possible to find the famous Biscari Palace, built on the old “walls”.The Biscari palace is composed by seven hundred rooms, it is located in the old quarter of Catania behind the popular down town area, overlooking the port on the famous marina arches, where trains still pass.
