Today’s Objectives

SWBAT explain trends in ionization energy.

SWBAT collect and record data about unknown substances to determine which substances are ionic.

REVIEW: Characteristics of Ionic Substances1.Electrons are transferred

2.Bonds between metals and non-metals

3.They make crystals (usually solids, hard but can break)

4.High melting points

5.Good conductors of electricity when dissolved

Is It Ionic? Lab

Now that you’ve learned what the general properties of ionic compounds are, it’s time to see if you can use those properties in the lab.

Your goal is to determine whether or not each of the five unknowns is ionic in nature.

You will use the three tests listed below to help you.

As you complete each test, record the data and determine if the compound is “ionic” or “not ionic.”

Test Protocol

Complete all three tests before moving on to the next substance

Test #1: Physical Analysis

Analyze the COLOR, TEXTURE, STATE OF MATTER, HARDNESS, BRITTLENESS, SQUISHINESS, etc.

Record descriptions in data tableUse this to help you determine if it is “ionic” or “not ionic”

Test #2: Water Solubility TestAdd 1 spoonful of each substances to an Erlenmeyer flasj with about 50 mL of water

Record results in data tableUse this to help you determine if it is “ionic” or “not ionic”

Test #3: Conductivity Test

Pour some of sample from the Water Solubility Test into Petri dish

Measure the conductivity of the substance

Listen to directions from Ms. Stroh on how to set up the circuit

Look closely at the light bulb to see if it lights up

Use this to help you determine if it is “ionic” or “not ionic”

LAB EXPECTATIONS…follow them or cry

Speak only loud enough so that only your group can hear you

Do not move on to the next station until I say to Follow all lab safety procedures Neglecting to follow any directions will result in book work. Read pages 220-227 Chapter Questions 1-20

Exit Question

1. Mr. LY wants to see if a new energy drink will help his muscles get even bigger. The energy drink has potassium chloride and sodium chloride in it. It also conducts electricity. Is the drink ionic? Why or why not?
