SKARGAARDEN

THERE IS NO GREATERLUXURY THAN TIMEEver since we at Skargaarden put together our first chair, we have

had a special relationship with time. We have spent rather a lot of it,

God only knows. Our furniture is not produced in an instant.

And we have made all our products with time in mind; from at

least two different aspects. On the one hand, they shall stand up to

time and age with absolute dignity. On the other hand, they are made

for a special time, namely free time. In our world, there is no purer

form of luxury than leisure time.

When you actually dont have to be productive. When you dont

have to think. When you can just be.

This years collection is broader than ever before, and the most

eye-catching newcomer is perhaps the Res chair, designed by Matilda

Lindblom. Another newcomer is the fire basket Boo, which turns into

an outdoor candle holder if you turn it upside-down. We are also

launching a smaller version of the Tipi lamp. The idea came from

Colorado, of all places, when a winter sports resort wanted a smaller

version to use on their terraces.

Our popular series Djur is supplemented with a dining chair in

two versions, one with a seat and back made from fabric and one

made entirely from teak, and accompanying tables. The Djur lounge

chair now also comes in a version made entirely from teak. And with

a matching foot stool thoroughly tried and tested for those whowant to do absolutely nothing at all.

SKARGAARD

weden lies in the far north, and the polar circle runs through it.Where we live was recently covered in glacier ice, and only whenthe ice started to retreat did humans take over the landscape.

Here, we live in the coniferous forest, and if you point eastwards, you pointtowards the Siberian tundra. Summer is short here. We know that every

minute of it is a loan, which we repay with interest during the dark months.Skargaarden could not have originated from anywhere else.We make leisure furniture. They can be placed wherever you want to

spend your leisure time. Irrespective of whether this is indoors or outdoors.For ourselves, we spend as much time as we can outdoors, during the shorttime this is possible.

It could be seen as a paradox to put your soul into something as transient asthe Scandinavian summer. We think the exact opposite. It is because summeris so short that it is worth it.

For a few months, light conquers the darkness.And at no other time of year are compromises as worthless.

MOVING OUTDOORSFor many hundreds of thousands of years, humans lived under the

open sky. And perhaps that is why we feel so comfortable there even

now. There are moments when even the very thought of walls and

roofs feels claustrophobic.

Out here, dinner often lasts into the night, full of discussions about

life, art, love and many much more trivial matters. The subject is

unimportant; the company is all. The newcomer Djur dining furniture made entirely from teak is

carefully designed to assist in these situations. Like the people sitting

in the chairs, it works well indoors. And does so with complete self-

confidence. But this is where it loves to be.

Here, where the sea whispers in the background, where the trees

listen in to the conversation, and where no-one bothers about what the

time happens to be.

SKARGAARDSKARGAARDEN

RESThe E6 road goes all the way up to Kirkenes, right up at the top of Scandinavia,

where Norway meets Russia. But those who turn off at Kragens, in Bohusln

on the Swedish west coast, and follow the road across two bridges, end up at

Res instead. A fishing village in the archipelago that refused to die and become

a tourist resort.

Here you can sit on the veranda of the boarding house by the sea and have

a beer. And when you look out across the archipelago, you can easily get an

idea for a chair. One that juxtaposes the soft and graceful lines of steel withthe sturdy load-bearing ability of fabric. A chair that can be varied without

becoming indistinct; a chair that is social and happiest in a group.

So then you quite simply leave the veranda, go home and design this chair.

Those who did not take the turning off the E6 still have sixteen hundred

kilometres to go to Kirkenes. On their way, they pass Narvik, the harbour

from which Kirunas iron ore is shipped to become steel. The circle closes,

even if you are still in Bohusln.

DJURDjur is a secret place. Its in the middle of Lake Vnern, isolated

from the world by freshwater that stretches into the distance: you feel

as though you are out at sea, or the last person on Earth.

Our Djur furniture range is not quite so secret. But it does share

some of the same qualities: the same sensation of other-worldliness.

Djur has a link to the past, to the iconic Scandinavian teak

furniture of the 50s. It also gives a very nonchalant nod to the future,in the durable acrylic fabric in the chair seat and backrest. Together,

the past and future combine to create a strong sensation of the here

and now.

Severely simple, without being the least bit Spartan.

Rather like the island that gives its name to this range of furniture.

Fallow deer also roam Djur, regal and graceful, but seldom seen.

This is a secret place.

FALSTERBOThere is something grand in the name Falsterbo. It expands slowly,

letter by letter. One need only print it to produce a logo that exudes

bohemian nobility and natural privilege. Just say the word and

imagine the shoreline embracing the sea, which turns to kiss the sky.

In this harmonious summer idyll, artist Joseph Frank drew five

summer houses the only ones he drew in Sweden. Here, southernSwedish nobility bathes in the nude. And, of course, there are also

golf clubs and horse shows.

Our Falsterbo lounge series encapsulates all this with a very casual

elegance, where strict lines are accompanied by generous cushions.

Ideally, they should be placed in the sparse pine forest near the

sea. But it works on your veranda, too. Guaranteed.

Our Falsterbo range is luxurious and inviting. Deep sofas and armch

with wooden frames and thick cushions (filled with down for indoor u

polyester for outdoor use)turn something as mundane as sitting down

a genuine experience. The series includes an armchair, two and three

GRINDAStanding on the gravel in front of his enormous Art Nouveau villa,

lawyer and financier Henrik Santesson smokes a cigarette, his eyes

squinting in the soft June light. It is 1930, and he is on the island of

Grinda in the Stockholm archipelago. A place where cows wander

around as if nothing matters to them apart from the grass.

A thousand miles away, in Dessau, Marcel Breuer sits on one

of the Bauhaus Schools rooftop terraces. He is dressed in a casual

summer suit and bowtie. When he shuts his eyes he imagines metalthat can be moulded into any sort of shape. When he opens his eyes

he sees the same stars that Santesson sees.

In many ways, the Grinda dining chair pays homage to both these men.

Quiet steel pipes that carry rustic wooden slats without a murmur.

At the same time, both aesthetically functional and so beautiful it feels

natural on the gravel, in front of a house, or on an island where the

cows are still wandering about.

The ingenious design of the Grinda chair: Dont get fooled by the

minimalistic, almost ascetic, look. The springiness in the constructio

and the carefully bended teak makes it very comfortable. Carefully cr

HRINGEHringe Castle nestles by Landfjrden Bay. It had stood there for 272

years when Torsten Kreuger purchased it in 1929. Torsten was a man

with little understanding of historically listed buildings and a keen

interest for new fashions.

He quickly installed a fridge in the kitchen, a skittle alley in one of the

wings and Swedens first outdoor swimming pool in the castle gardens.

Over time, the castle became a jet-set haunt where one could see both

Josephine Baker and Greta Garbo. Decadent? Perhaps a bit. Fashionable?

To some extent. If you were to design a piece of furniture according to the same

principles, you could base it on solid traditions with precise, balanced

lines. To the classic, original design you might add a decadent playfulness

and a very relaxed way of relating to luxury.

This was what we did when we developed the range of dining

furniture we call Hringe. Greta Garbo would have been the perfect

accessory. But it works with any mysterious beauty in dark sunglasses.

Our Hringe range is sophisticated and refined in expression and entirely

enuine in form. What you see is what you get: a steel frame, completely

ee from seams and joints, strips of wood, and cushions in fabric or

OXNOxn lies on the island of Gl in the Stockholm archipelago.

Here, pines edge towards the waterline, held back by grey rocks

with the quiet authority of millions of years of experience.

This is not a spectacular place, but uncomplicated and beautiful:

precisely the sublime qualities that inspire our Oxn range of dining

chairs and tables.

Oxn chairs are designed with and without armrests. Both have

curved slats in the seat, which by i ts ingenious design seem to floatjust outside the frame. The details are innovative and intricate, but

the overall impression is so simple that it almost feels perfunctory.

It is almost as though the chair i s aware of its own clarity.

Meanwhile in Oxn: nothing, absolutely nothing, happens that

has not already happened for the past ten thousand years. The same

pines, the same rocks.

INTERIOR DETAILSSkargaarden is more than furniture. Wood and steel are the foundation for

what we make, but these must be supplemented by the softness of textiles

and the transparency of glass. After all, we have taken on a big mission: to

furnish moments of peace and quiet. You cant skim over the detail then.

So we make cushions that can cope with outdoor use. In lots of different

colours, and with quirky details that make them as suitable for decorating

as for relaxing. And, of course, soft throws made from pure wool, with fine

leather detailing. There to warm you, when summer drifts into autumn.

And, talking about the time when darkness returns to the evenings you

need light as well. Our outdoor lamp Tipi, designed in association with

Atelj Lyktan, provides warm and solid lighting for your sitting-out area.A newcomer this year is a smaller version. And, for those who prefer more

back-to-nature sources of light, we have storm lanterns with glass from

Reijmyre glassworks, where the craft has been refined for more than

two hundred years, deep inside the silent, needle-strewn melancholy of

the Kolmrden forest. A newcomer this year is the fire basket Boo, which

contributes both flaming light and generous heat.

The range also includes champagne coolers and tableware items.

DJURLounge and dining range in teak. The armchair is available with seat and back made from Batyline

textile from Ferrari, or made entirely from teak. There is also a matching foot stool in teak.

Dining chair made entirely from teak or with seat and back made from Batyline textile. There is

one circular and two rectangular dining tables, seating up to six (actually, as many as eight if you use

the ends).

There are two lower, circular tables to go with the lounge chairs.

The furniture can be oiled annually if used outdoors and if you want to retain their original look.

If you choose not to oil them, they will slowly turn a beautiful patinated grey. Batyline Duo

GRINDAGrinda dining furniture comes in teak or oak slats with a black painted steel frame and in white

painted ash slats with a white painted steel frame.

Grinda dining furniture includes a side chair, arm chair and four different sizes of tables

to decorate your balcony, veranda, wooden deck, the lawn or wherever you choose to arrange

lovely dinner parties.

Although it has a minimalistic look, the spring steel frames of the chairs, as well as the gently

curved wood in the seat, make it very comfortable. In the back, the wood is elegantly pierced

INTERIOR DETAILSOur cushions and throws are based on simple ideas, and gain character from their well-worked

detailing. The cushions are sewn using fabric from Sunbrella, which is not just beautiful, but

also copes with both sun and rain. We make them in strong, clear colours and with well-wor-

ked details, such as duffel toggles in wood, press studs in metals and corners in leather. We

also offer throws made from the finest wool, with leather detailing, beautiful storm lanterns

and textiles for the dining table. The Tipi lamp is manufactured in association with Atelj Lyk-

tan, and a newcomer this year is the fire basket Boo, in stainless or black laquered steel, which

can be supplemented with a brass tray to go underneath.

Wood is a material that needs to be looked after well. By caring for your

furniture properly, you can increase its lifespan and keep it beautiful.

One simple way to do this is by wiping it with a damp cloth, so that

pollen, bird droppings and other types of dirt do not gain a foothold.

OILED OAK

Our oiled oak furniture is finished with quality oil. Maintenance needs

are determined by how much the furniture is exposed to the sun, water

and general use. However, a rule of thumb is that you should oil your

furniture twice a year. Always wash with soap and water before youapply oil (mould and algae can be treated with chlorine or similar).

Rinse well, but never use a high-pressure hose. Allow to dry, scrape off

flaking oil and rub gently. Apply one to three coats of Skargaarden

wood oil. Follow instructions provided on the packaging. Over time,

small cracks will form in the wood; this is entirely normal and gives

what is known as patina. If you prefer, you can choose not to oil

your furniture. It will then develop a lovely grey hue, but will be less

resistant to the elements.

PAINTED WOOD

Painted surfaces can usually go three to four seasons outdoors without

a great deal of maintenance. However, if paint gets chipped or becomes

worn, you need to repair it immediately. Sand and clean the affected

area and reapply Skargaarden paint specifically made for outdoor use.

TEAKWe recommend that you allow your teak furniture to age naturally and

that you simply clean it thoroughly once or twice a year. If you want

to retain the golden-brown colour of new teak you will commit to a

regular maintenance program. If the furniture is left to age naturally

outside by being exposed to light, air and rain, then the surface of the

teak will gradually change to beautiful soft, silver-grey.

Teak or oak? Teak is highly resistant to rot and is almost unaffected by

sun, rain, frost and snow. Kiln-dried teak is compact, dense and has natural

oil content. Oak has similar qualities, but lacks the natural oil content. There-

fore, over time, oak develops small natural cracks in the wood surface and

a beautiful grey colour that gives the furniture a beautiful patina. Teak

develops no small cracks, but it attains the same beautiful silver-grey patina

if it is not oiled. Teak is absolutely the best choice in terms of durability

for outdoor furniture. Oak is a fantastically beautiful wood for outdoor

furniture with the patina of an aged wood, but it is not quite as durable.

We recommend that you choose teak for furniture to be left outdoors

year round in the sun, rain, frost and snow. But if you want to use the

furniture in covered outdoor environments or seek to achieve a beautiful

patina, oak is a good choice. But be aware, however, that oak has a shorter

lifespan than teak when exposed to weather.

PAINTED WOOD

Our painted furniture is made of kiln-dried eucalyptus and ash.

Kiln-drying is important so that the wood is not affected by cold and

heat after it has been painted. The furniture is hand-painted with the

best available paints for marine use to withstand weather.

We recommend eucalyptus and ash for outdoor environments and

oak for roof-covered areas. The furniture is designed for outdoor use,

but it is affected by weather conditions in the same way as wood in

marine environments is affected in general.

long-term perspective of sustainability. Our teak comes from carefully

selected approved plantations with the highest available quality. Theoak comes from wood suppliers who take great responsibility for the

environment in all stages of production. Our linen comes from well-

known Romo and our outdoor fabrics are from Sunbrella and Ferrari,

both leading companies in the development of weather-resistant fabrics.

Its easy, really. Our furniture is made for the places and the spacesin between things. Skargaarden is Swedish for archipelago, where the

land and sea meet and greet, gently nestling each other. The reed,

part under water, part above the surface. The sand on the beaches

is the bottom of the sea. There are perhaps limits, borders and

boundaries. They just cant be told.

We make furniture that is perhaps at its best when you place it

between the inside and the outside. On the patios and verandas, in

the winter garden or in the room with the sliding landscape windows.

When you cant say whether youre indoors or outside.

And it really doesnt matter.
