You might recognize this painting as a world famous Masterpiece by Dutch artist Rembrandt Van Rijn – a name that doesn’t need further introduction. For this year’s catalogue, we added a little ‘vinyl magic’ to celebrate

the Dutch Vinyl Masters, a collection of Dutch albums that have conquered the world. You can find these in the centrefold of this catalogue (p16-17).

The past 12 months we have not been sitting still: earlier this year we celebrated our 500th release, by the end of 2012 our catalogue will have grown to about 700 titles. We released a diverse range of classic albums by Rory Gallagher, Electric Light Orchestra, B.B. King, Miles Davis, Live, White Zombie, The Who, Iron Butterfly to mention only a few. We have a special page dedicated to Original Soundtracks (p22) as this assortment is

steadily growing with awesome new releases. And you know what? 2013 will have much more in store!

The Byrds were one of the earliest groups who successfully combined the best of both worlds; They caught on to the energy of the British Invasion and fused it with the lyricism & musical elements of the contemporary Folk movement. Along the way they pioneered Psychedelic and Country Rock, always keeping things recognisable with their vocal harmonies accompanied by jangly guitars. After the departure of three band members that played on Sweetheart Of The Rodeo, Roger McGuinn

had to assemble a new line-up for The Byrds. Especially their new guitarist Clarence White really shines on Dr.

Sam Cooke, inventor and true King of Soul, recorded Night Beat in 1963, an album that was more bluesy and moodier than anybody had seen before from Cooke. This album from 1990 marks the return of Ritchie Blackmore

Miles Davis was asked to create the soundtrack for the film “Ascenseur Pour L’échafaud” in 1957. He knew exactly how to portray the smoky, hazed and frantic scenes through sonic imagery. Davis brought four French Jazzmen to the recording studio without having them prepare anything in advance.

Eventually Ascenseur Pour L’échafaud has become a great achievement of artistic excellence. For the first time since its original release in 1958, Music On Vinyl combined the original soundtrack and the additional recordings, creating an essential 2LP set with the original artwork.

Bob Dylan’s Love And Theft was a true return to form, his 30th studio album, with the unfortunate release date of September 11, 2001. His voice is shot but, he sounds warmer, more relaxed and old Mr. Grumpy is as good humoured as on The Basement Tapes. Bob is in a wistful, elegiac, playful mood.

The June 23, 1968 show of Janis Joplin & Big Brother and the Holding Company at the Carousel Ballroom would prove to be legendary on a number of levels. Janis would leave the band only two months after the show to pursue her solo career, making this one of the last times the ensemble worked together.

The show was recorded by Augustus Owsley Stanley III a.k.a. ‘Bear’: soundman of The Grateful Dead and a masterful LSD-cooker, who also supervised the re-mastering of the recordings shortly before his death

in March 2011. This is to be the first in a series of releases from his archive titled ‘Bear’s Sonic Archive’, and it promises to be one hell

of a ride. Though some of these songs have appeared on a 1972 Janis Joplin collection before in a very raw form,

this is the first time these recordings are being released on vinyl, in a gatefold sleeve.

The British progressive rock band Alan Parsons Project was active between 1975 and 1990. The Project consisted of Eric Woolfson and Alan Parsons surrounded by a varying amount of session musicians.

The title track Eye In The Sky, originally released in 1982, turned out to be the Project’s greatest hit to date. In a similar style

Lawless is a brand new star studded movie by director John Hillcoat (The Road, The Proposition) about a gang of bootleggers in Virginia during the Great Depression. Guy Pierce, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy and Shia LeBoeuf signed up for the gritty and evocative story about brothers who try to create their own American Dream during Prohibition.

Nick Cave assisted Hillcoat with the screenplay, whilst also paying special attention to the soundtrack of the film. The live album As Recorded at Madison Square Garden was originally released in June 1972, just one week after the concert took place at the Madison Square Garden arena in New York City. This show was Presley’s first live concert in the Big Apple since the 1950s. 49When two dogs (in this case, Blur and Oasis) fight over a bone, sometimes an unknown third hound grabs the title of Best Britpop Band of 1995.

Such was the case with Pulp, even if charismatic frontman Jarvis Cocker was not exactly fond of the moniker.

Pulp came, saw, and recorded one of the best albums of the genre with 1995’s Different Class. The inspiration for the title came from

a friend of Cocker who used the phrase ‘different class’ to describe something that was ‘in a class of its own’. Cocker liked the double

meaning, with its allusions to the British social class system – a theme of some of the songs on the album; ‘We don’t want no

trouble, we just want the right to be different. That’s all.’

Two of the singles on the album – “Common People” and “Disco 2000” (reaching #2 and #7 in the UK

Daub a bit of glitter on your cheekbones and become a star; Marc Bolan of British Glam Rock band T. Rex did just that. It wasn’t only his flamboyant personality, eerily good looks and enigmatic stage presence that made him one of the most popular artists of his time, he was a prolific songwriter, poet and an inventive singer/guitarist to boot. In 1972 EMI signed this remarkable artist and created a dedicated label for him called T. Rex Wax Co. through which he released six albums in as many years until Bolan’s fatal car crash in 1977.

This is a collection of all the singles he cut for the label, and Music On Vinyl is the first to release this compilation on vinyl. With excellent artwork and liner notes by Mark Paytress, The T.Rex Wax Co. Singles A’s and B’s is a great introduction for those less familiar with these British pioneers, and it’s “T. Rextasy” for longtime fans!
