aboutSoundTraxxSoundTraxx has been designing and manufacturing the latest in state-of-the-art sound systems for the discriminati ng model railroader for over 25 years. Our experti se in creati ng innovati ve and fun products for DCC and sound cannot be surpassed.

Many of our ground-breaking features began with our early products. Our fi rst product was a powerful litt le lighti ng system called the Hyperlight. The Hyperlight was the fi rst lighti ng system to use a microprocessor, not only to provide brilliant lighti ng eff ects, but also to allow the user to select the desired eff ect from within one model. Today we sti ll incorporate this system into our digital sound decoders.

In 1992, our fi rst steam sound system included the fi rst digital, playable whistle. Today our sound decoders use an evolved version of this feature. Our current sound decoders can play a multi tude of sounds including whistles, bells, airhorns, compressors, dynamic brakes, and engine prime movers.

The steam versions also introduced our customers to Dynamic Digital Exhaust™, a method of adjusti ng the sound volume and ‘cut-off ’ of steam exhaust chuff automati cally, further enhancing the illusion of a steam locomoti ve coasti ng into the stati on or working to ascend a steep grade. This feature has been revamped for both steam and diesel locomoti ves in our new line of Tsunami2 Digital Sound Decoders (pg. 7).

Our Fireman Fred features (named to describe a set of sound eff ects associated with the work of a locomoti ve fi reman) were the fi rst of their kind. They have been a popular additi on to SoundTraxx steam sound decoders over the years. Tsunami2 now has FiremanEd available for diesel versions as well.

We incorporate leading technology into easy-to-use products in our new Tsunami2 and Econami lines of Digital Sound Decoders. We conti nue to invest in cutti ng-edge manufacturing machinery and emphasize quality control and customer support.

Testing the Locomotive Stall Current

Testing your locomotive’s stall current is the first and most important thing to do before your purchase. The manufacturer of the locomotive may have provided this information for you, but beware! There are occasionally situations where a motor may not meet the manufacturer’s specifications. Likewise, this measurement should not be confused with its operating current. Therefore, we highly recommend that you do the following:

1. Place the locomotive on a section of track powered with a conventional DC power pack set to the same track voltage as your command station (typically 12-14 volts).

2. Connect a DC ammeter in series with one of the track feeders. If your power pack has built-in meters, they may be used for this purpose.

3. Grasp the locomotive to prevent it from taking off, and turn the power pack on.

4. Stop the motor from turning by grabbing hold of the flywheel or driveshaft.

5. For the most accurate current measurement, be sure that the power pack voltage remains at the voltage set in Step 1.

6. Measure the current the locomotive is drawing while the motor is stalled. This is the stall current and must be less than the decoder’s rated capacity.

Choosing the Right Board Format

In many cases, choosing the right board format will be obvious. However, if you have models which require a little more thought, it is important to select a decoder that you are comfortable installing unless you will enlist the help of a friend or DCC professional.

Some of our sound decoders are installed by way of small plastic caps that simply hold the wires in place. Some models are designed to plug into a mating connector on the circuit board that was installed during its assembly. Others easily plug into harnesses from prior installations.

SoundTraxx manufactures a variety of formats to facilitate an easy installation wherever possible.

Choosing the Right Soundfor your Model

Sometimes, choosing the right sound is easy, but regardless, we suggest choosing the sound that you like best. Many sound effects can be adjusted, such as the exhaust rate, bell ring rate, or number of airpumps. All SoundTraxx digital sound decoders have a ‘menu’ of prime movers, steam chuffs, airhorns or whistles, bells, and a plethora of other sounds that one can simply select using a DCC command station.

When choosing the decoder for a diesel locomotive, the prime mover (i.e. EMD, ALCO) is probably the most important factor, so take that into consideration when making your purchase.

The features list and decoder comparison chart offer a quick overview of technical specifications, sound effects, and operating characteristics across the current product line to help you to determine the product family that best suits your needs.

Now the biggest name in sound is also the biggest name in value! Starti ng at just $79.95 MSRP, Econami is a full-featured line of digital sound decoders designed with value in mind.

Available in fi ve formats to suit a variety of steam and diesel locomoti ves, Econami provides high-quality 16-bit sound, Hyperlight lighti ng eff ects, and Hyperdrive2 advanced motor control for enhanced realism. New features include Flex-Map technology, an easy-to-use method for assigning any functi on to any functi on key.

The Econami line ranges from our smallest sound decoder, the ECO-100 (measuring just 27mm x 10.5mm x 5mm) to our largest decoder the ECO-400, 4-amp version for models requiring a litt le more “beef.”

The 2-amp ECO-200 and the ECO-PNP decoders are two new additi ons to the Econami line. The ECO-200 is a new universal-format Econami suited for a variety of scales, HO to S. Stop Limiting your train to locomotive sounds! The Tsunami SoundCar is the only DCC digital sound decoder to replicate railcar sounds and lights. The Tsunami SoundCar is a 16-bit, universal-style sound decoder featuring many new and accurate recordings, most of which can be customized to accommodate a variety of rolling stock. Furthermore, the decoder has automated sound sequences and auto-adjusti ng features for more realisti c operati on.

The Tsunami SoundCar adds railcar sounds such as the clickety-clack, fl ange squeal, fl at spots, generator, brake cylinders, and glad hand release to your railroad. The CurrentKeeper is ideal for imperfect track or models that lack multi ple pickups as it allows you to maintain operati ons during momentary losses of power. Mini Cube SpeakersThese revoluti onary speakers allow for big sounds in the smallest spaces. The unique design of these speakers allows for faithful reproduction of sounds throughout a very wide frequency range. With the factory supplied enclosure they can be mounted inside small locomoti ve cabs, under the narrow hood of diesel models and almost anywhere other speakers may not fi t. If you have a model with limited space, these are the speakers for you!

Note: We recommend using two of either of the Mini Cube speakers wired in series when installed with higher powered digital sound decoders. Failure to do so may result in damage to the Mini Cube speaker or decoder.
