You can apply sunscreen to all areas that are the most sensitive to the sun, especially if your cat has lighter skin and hair. Ears, temples, lips, and nose can be the most sensitive to sunburn. Also, keeping your cat out of direct sunlight between the hours of 10AM and 2PM can also decrease the risk of life-threatening sunburn. Cars can be a death trap! Even cracking the windows or keeping them rolled down on a hot day can turn your car into a sauna in just minutes. On a 90 degree day, your car can quickly turn into 120+ degree incinerator. It’s best to leave your pet at home while you run errands, even if it’s only going to be for just a few minutes. Maintain good grooming habits! Keep pets hair clipped short, free of mats and brushed well. Proper grooming can really help to keep your pet cool! Remember that your cat cannot sweat to keep cool. Cats and dogs only sweat from their paws, which does not allow for much cool-down. Your cat may start to pant if the heat is getting to be too much, this is usually the first sign of heat- stroke. Remember these few easy rules for the summer and you and your companion will be able to enjoy many happy summer’s together! Cat Days Of Summer? July 2011

    Inside this issue:

As the days become warmer and longer, your family may gravitate toward fun-filled outside activities. Your otherwise indoor pets can become increasingly

vulnerable to many outdoor dangers. One of the biggest dangers to your pet

during this season can be the heat!

Remember these necessary precautions the next time you take your pet on vacation or leash them for a stroll around the block:

    • Always make sure there is plenty of fresh water available.

    • Create sun-free shady spots all day long so that your cat can relax

and enjoy the outdoors without laying in direct sunlight. • While exercise is very important to all pets, over-exertion can be

deadly during the hot summer months.

    • Sunscreen is not just for humans! Fur does not fully protect skin from the sun’s harmful rays. You can apply

sunscreen to all areas that are the most sensitive to the sun, especially if your cat has lighter skin and hair.

Ears, temples, lips, and nose can be the most sensitive to sunburn. Also, keeping your cat out of direct sunlight between the hours of 10AM and 2PM can also decrease the risk of life-threatening sunburn.

    • Cars can be a death trap! Even cracking the windows or keeping them rolled down on a hot day can turn your

car into a sauna in just minutes. On a 90 degree day, your car can quickly turn into 120+ degree incinerator. It’s best to leave your pet at home while you run errands, even if it’s only going to be for just a few minutes.

    • Maintain good grooming habits! Keep pets hair clipped short, free of mats and

brushed well. Proper grooming can really help to keep your pet cool!

    • Remember that your cat cannot sweat to keep cool. Cats and dogs only sweat

from their paws, which does not allow for much cool-down. Your cat may start to pant if the heat is getting to be too much, this is usually the first sign of heat-

    stroke.

  • Rolling out the Red Carpet

    PAGE 3 CAT CHAT

There are those who love to bask in the spotlight and steal all of the attention. Yet others, who are equally adorable but are too shy to be caged up at the store for our adoption events. Today, these “uneventful kitties” get to run the red carpet and show us exactly why they were nominated for the following categories!

    Most Outgoing

“Range” 1 y/o-Female Range is a beautiful playful kitten! At the young age of just 1 y/o, she still very much plays like a kitten. She is looking for a home either as an only kitty or a home that has someone that is just as playful as she is.

Double Duo –“Dickens and Stormy” Dickens Female 6-8 y/o Stormy Female 8-10 y/o

This duo came to us when their owner passed away! Double the trouble you ask?

Well only if you are the male kitty in the house! These two divas run the roost.

    Best Break-through Duo

“Sampson and Delilah” 3 y/o M&F These two kitties are in need of a quiet home. They are only 3 y/o. They came to us because their owner could no longer care for them.

    Most Desirable Male

    “Earl”- 5 y/o

I am a friendly, large male who enjoys looking out windows, watching the birds and trying to catch toy mice. I would be better as an only cat. I love to sleep in bed with you and sit on your lap. I will explore your house from top to bottom until I have checked everything out.

Best Cameo- “Gazebo” 1 y/o– Male

I was a “fruit-box kitty” that was dumped at the shelter last year! Most of the other kitties have been adopted, but since I was taped up in a box it is hard for me to go to adoption events and be put in that tiny cage. I have a big personality and a sweet composure.

These cats have only been nominated for their awards, they are waiting for their big prize by finding a forever home. Please consider adopting one of these wonderful cats! For more information on these cats, and other equally special cats please visit our website www.1by1 catrescue.org OR www.1by1.petfinder.org.

Every life that enters One By One has meaning and is one more life saved! We are only able to provide for our ani-

mals through voluntary efforts and your donations. Our funds are used to keep our cats healthy– spay/neuters, den-

tal work, vaccines, vet visits, and medications prove to be very costly, yet necessary expenses.

Please continue to support our no-kill mission, where our goal is to adopt out every cat who enters our organization

one by one (or two by two, whenever possible). Donations to all non-profit organizations across the world have de-

creased due to the troubled economy. We are no exception, our funds are desperately low. Please help in any way

possible. We really appreciate your contributions. Thank you!
