Gardeners Celebrate 10 Years Of Local Agricultural
Get out the rake and hoe, it’s time to celebrate 10 years of local gardening expertise at the 10th Annual Nelson Garden Festival on Saturday, May 7 in downtown Nelson.
“It started out simply on Hall Street in 2001,” says or-ganizer Suzy Hamilton. “And now it is simply fantastic. Th e festival is a real testimony to the quality of growers and artisans we have here in the Kootenays.”
With more than 40 vendors selling everything from lo-cal seeds, plants, bulbs, trees, garden ornaments and fur-niture, the festival has moved to the 200 block of Baker Street and runs from 10 am to 3 pm on the Saturday be-fore Mother’s Day.
“We always schedule the festival for Mother’s Day week-end because it’s such a popular place to fi nd something for mom, or to bring mom down to pick out something for herself,” says Hamilton.
Th is year’s festival thanks the vendors for their con-taining support with a complimentary t-shirt designed by local artist Leah Wilson. Th e t-shirts will also be for sale at the festival.
Music, community groups info tables and lots of gar-dening stories add to the mix of fun, fl owers and festivity.
Th e festival is sponsored by the WK EcoSociety. For more information, call 250-354-1909 or visit www.ecosociety.ca

Workshop For Non-Profi t Societies Th e Lardeau Valley Historical Society would like to give
a “heads up” regarding a workshop on board governance and best practices for non-profi t societies. It is booked for June 25 and is one you may want to sign up for early in order to get a seat.
Several years ago, such a workshop was off ered in Kaslo for non-profi t societies. It was lead by Th eresa Kingston of Port Alberni, who is an expert in this. She provided an entertaining and very informative workshop (the class maximum was 30 and we still had a waiting list).
Some years have passed since then. Th ere has no doubt been a lot of board member turn-over since then. We have invited Ms. Kingston to return to give a similar workshop for arts, culture, heritage and other non-profi t boards. Th e aim is to help with a better understanding of the structure of nonprofi t societies, working with volunteers, running meetings effi ciently and a myriad of other board issues.
Th e workshop will be the start of a year long event called “Th e Process Project”. Th is project will involve interested non-profi t board members from across Area D, (and be-yond if space allows). It will off er 2 coordinators to work with the boards, designing templates for streamlining paperwork, researching (more) best practices and gener-ally assisting the participating boards in building capacity and sustainability within each organization. We hope to make it a whole lot easier (and maybe even more fun?) to participate on a board and fulfi ll society mandates more successfully.
Pending funding, this workshop will be held Saturday, June 25. Workshop cost is $10 per person. For more in-formation or to sign up call Deb at 250-366-4325 or Ann at 250-366-4305.
World Labyrinth Day Saturday, May 7, marks the 3rd annual World Labyrinth
Day event ... a day when people from all over the planet will ‘Walk as One at 1:00’ ... creating a rolling meditation around the globe for healing and peace.
At this time of rapid global change, if we ever wanted to encourage these changes to be positive and gentle ... this is an opportunity to join in community and set that inten-tion, en masse! Based as much in science, mathematics and geometry as it is in spirituality and metaphysics, the labyrinth has been used for centuries as a way to com-municate with our inner and outer worlds.
As Virginia LoneSky of Peaceful Endeavours states, the labyrinth is “A place where we scientifi cally stimulate the left /right hemispheres of our brain to activate ‘something’; the labyrinth is working with humanity to help during times of challenges and changes”. Some users say they ex-perience calm and inner peace. It’s a place of refuge. A place to give the overworked, weary mind a chance to re-coup and refresh, and to go forward toward a new day, or new goals, or to heal.”
Labyrinths have been found all over the world and the earliest ones date back to 3500 BC. Currently, there is a global labyrinth revival taking place – they are appearing in back yards, in city parks, at retreat centres, in church halls and parking lots. We are extremely fortunate to have our very own Lakeside Labyrinth in Nelson’s city park.
In celebration of World Labyrinth Day, your Nelson Community Labyrinth Group will host a walk and will have a labyrinth display on site; books, photographs, handouts and fi nger labyrinths. Come and experience for yourself what a simple walk in the park can reveal. Bring the entire family, children love to run the labyrinth and they especially like the magic of the ‘squeak’ when they clap in the centre!
Th e Lakeside Labyrinth is wheelchair accessible and is open during park hours and is always free of charge. For more information, contact Shane at 250-352-9630, or www.labyrinth.kics.bc.ca. Gather at 12:30 pm, walk at 1 pm. See you there on May 7.
