Giovanni Maria Cassini (1745 – 1824)was an Italian globe maker, geographer, engraver, and cartographer. His maincartographic work was the Nuovo AtlanteGeografico Universale of 1792-1801. In1790, the Calcografia Camerale of Rome
published his twelve terrestrial globe goresthat updated the world cartography after the three voyages of Captain James Cook around the globe.

PREMISE The Base and the meridian arc (the Support) form thesupporting structure of theglobe. The strenght of thestructure is due to its particular
shape (triangular prism) and tothe tension generated by thecurvatures of the paper. Theassemblage is not difficult, but it is absolutely necessary toobserve two rules: (i) take careas much as possible of theallignment of the parts and of the flaps to glue (the blue linescan help you); (ii) during theassemblage, continuously check the allignment of themeridian arc along the vertical axis, in order to avoid thetwisting of the arc, as shown onthe figure on the left.I suggest to check continuously the assemblage, bringing the parts close together beforegluing the flaps.

Procedi ora all’assemblaggio delle treparti formanti il supporto.
. Il supporto completato appariràcome in figura .

. Glue S on S . Use the templateon page 2-8 for a correct allignment.
. Glue S on S . Check theallignment with a ruler.
. Glue S on S . Always check thecorrect allignment.
. Glue S on S .
. Close the parts starting from flap(pay attention on the allignment and avoid the twisting!!!). After gluing flap
, insert a piece of cotton pushing it toward the already closed tip (see thegreen arrows on scheme below). The cotton stops the rice you will introduce in order to increase theweight of the support. Continue theclosure till flap . Now, insert about 250 g of rice (shake a little bit tocompact the rice), then, insert another
piece of cotton. Proceed to thecomplete closure till flap .
. The completed support will look like in figure .

4 6 Use the templateon page 2-8 for a correct allignment.
Now, proceed to the assemblage of the three parts forming the support.
. Glue the flaps, on the external side, following the red number on the flaps. The correct allignment can be (also)checked following the blue dotted lines.

ISTRUZIONI / INSTRUCTIONS

Cut out the covers. Before gluing the covers, paint the edges and the borders of the Base and the Support with a black and/or brown felt-tip pen. This is useful in order to avoid the occurrence of white areas after gluing the covers.
