Dear Friends and Colleagues,
The year gone by has been a very fulfilling one for all of us at CASP as we were able to engage with newer programmes. We also aligned closely with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan which we hope will make India a cleaner better place for the coming generat ions.
Our programmes in M umbai for vocat ional t raining and health care cont inued even as we launched a School Improvement Programme in four schools (including one for special children) where we focussed on improving the school infrast ructure and also provide the schools with materials.
In Pune the school WASH programmes cont inued to consolidate. We launched another school WASH programme which extended to improving the environment of the school. With both these programmes we have been able to extend our capacity to engage with communit ies and advocate for behavioural change.
Across Pune dist rict our microfinance and livelihoods programme cont inued to grow t ill we had reached out to more than 4,000 women across more than 200 villages. In addit ion to assist ing these marginalised women we also launched a reading and mathemat ical skills programme for young children. This has been implemented for 1000 children in 32 schools across the dist rict and the metropolitan area of Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune.
In Delhi our work of providing support to first generat ion learners cont inues. As also our adult educat ion programmes for women from underprivileged families who desire to cont inue their educat ion. Here too we undertook programmes for improving the sanitat ion in schools as also improved the infrast ructure. At the same t ime special programmes for special children and working children also cont inued.
In Gujarat we cont inued to support children from underprivileged families who live in small hamlets in remote areas of Kutch. We also cont inued our micro finance programme which provides women with the opportunity to establish or expand their businesses and pull their families out of poverty.
In the years ahead we will cont inue to develop and implement programmes that are relevant and address the changing needs of the country. We will cont inue to work towards a developed empowered society as we build a new India …child by child.

CASP - At a Glance
Community Aid & Sponsorship Programme (CASP), a non Government , not -for-profit organizat ion has been working across several states of India for almost four decades. The primary goal of the organisat ion is to provide under-privileged children with development opportunit ies.
CASP is governed by a group of eminent professionals from diverse fields, designated as the Governing Council. This
body decides policies and guides the organizat ion’s workforce.
CASP is committed to engaging with the community in a part icipatory manner to assess development needs and
implement programmes. Through the sponsorship programme the organisat ion has been successful in reaching out to
underprivileged children, their families and the communit ies where live.
CASP facilitates, and in some cases actually provides, opportunit ies for children to access educat ion, health, recreat ion,
and later in life, livelihoods. But above all the organisat ion aims to prepare them to take on the challenges of life and
part icipate in the development of India.
CASP collaborates with individuals and organisat ions that are willing to make a long term commitment and share our
vision of developing self reliant communit ies where children are able to realise their rights. These include and state
governments and several nat ional and internat ional organizat ions both Non Profits and commercial establishments.
Some of these partnerships have been in place for years while others are more recent partnerships. Apart from these
organisat ions CASP is also supported by individuals both in India and abroad who believe in the ability of CASP to
change lives and thus provide assistance in their individual capacity. We are grateful for the support from all our
individual and organisat ional partners.
CASP collaborates with Individuals and organisat ion that are the result of long term commitment and a joint vision of
self reliant communit ies. Recent ly formed too are important as they have opened new avenues. CASP acknowledges
the support it receives from individual and organizat ional sponsors in building relat ionships across the globe.
CASP implemented a variety of projects in the year 2014-2015 with a view to address locally relevant issues affect ing
children and their communit ies at mult iple locat ions. A bouquet of programs for children were implemented including
Early Childhood Care and Educat ion, support for mainst ream educat ion, health init iat ives part icularly directed towards
reproduct ive and child health (with a special focus on adolescent health) including HIV/AIDS awareness, increasing
opportunit ies for livelihoods and community development . The programmes for community development focused on
sanitat ion, habitat , access to services and care for the elderly. This year too we cont inued to focus on the part icipat ion
of the common man in governance by engaging with the administ rat ion on the implementat ion of government
programmes. Livelihood programmes were primarily directed towards women and youth, to ensure social just ice and
economic and social empowerment .
CASP has been focusing on the part icipat ion of children by empowering them and facilitat ing their inclusion in decision
making and the monitoring of programmes. CASP believes that every child must be aware of her/ his rights and the
means to obtain and defend them. Bal Panchayats (Child councils) and Bal Sabhas (Children meet ings) have been
encouraged at every locat ion where the organisat ion is working. Children are members of these bodies which diagnose
community issues and part icipate in the resolut ion of the same. The children are personally inst rumental in organizing
workshops, meet ing with decision makers and mobilizing resources. In a t rue sense this is a children’s movement .
6 Annual Report 2016-17
CASPVisit us at www.caspindia.org
CASP has encouraged the part icipat ion of the communit ies not only as recipients of the services it offers, but as equal
decision makers in planning, implementat ion and gradually increasing ownership of the projects. The thrust on
encouraging the community, especially women, to form Community Based Organizat ions (CBOs) in all the locat ions
where CASP works, is an ideal example of the focus on community involvement . Today the volunteer base from the
community is the back bone of our programs. It is this partnership with the communit ies that has helped create a
sustainable resource at all our program locat ions, both present and past .
CASP works through eight Units. Of these, four are in M aharashtra – M umbai with a sub unit at Nagpur, Raigad Dist rict ,
Pune (Urban), and Pune (Rural). There are also two units in Delhi – CASP Delhi Unit (which also works in Western UP)
and CASP Plan Unit and one each in Kerala (in collaborat ion with the Rajagiri College of Social Sciences), and in Gujarat
at Kutch. Each unit has a set of act ivit ies which are based on the needs of the local community. Thus the organisat ion
implements mult idimensional programmes.
Each unit team is led by a Project manager and advised by a Chairperson. Efforts of all the team members at all locat ions
deserve kudos for their dedicat ion, perseverance and ‘let ’s do it ’ att itude.

A number of workshops/ consultat ions, at the regional and nat ional levelsand t raining programmes
for/ about senior cit izens were organized by ILC-I with a view to orient ing senior cit izens and other
stakeholders in the field of populat ion ageing to a number of relevant issues. Cited below are the most
impact ful ones of them all-
ü An interact ion with the Police Commissioner of Pune, M s. Rashmi Shukla and the senior cit izens of
Pune city that was organized by ILC-I on the occasion of the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in
June 2016, was the catalyst that led to the format ion of “ What ’s app” groups of the leaders of the
senior cit izens and the designated police officers in charge of the senior cit izens, which ensured
that the seniors stayed connected with the police 24x7.
ü A one day orientat ion workshop for the senior cit izens who volunteer to be a part of the ‘Healthy
Life for Seniors’ project run by the Associat ion of Senior Cit izens’ Organisat ions of Pune (ASCOP)
was organized by ILC-I in July 2016. These volunteers, who themselves are older persons, ensure
that those seniors who live by themselves or with their spouse and are weak, very old, fragile,
disabled and / or vulnerable are attended to by the act ive seniors by providing them with their
required medicines, taking them to the doctors or hospitals for consultat ions or t reatments and
even giving a pat ient hearing to their grievances, just being there for them as friends and also
counselling.
ü A two days’ Nat ional Consultat ion on “ Challenges and Opportunit ies before an Ageing Society”
held on the 18th& 19th of August 2016, got together the leading experts in this field to discuss this
and a Pune Declarat ion on this was issued and sent to the nodal minist ry for ageing in India, the
M inist ry of Social Just ice & Empowerment , Govt . of India.
ü An innovat ive two days’ workshop, “ The Role of Senior Cit izens in M aintaining a Green &
Sustainable Environment ” that needs to be ment ioned here is the one held in October 2016,
where the office-bearers of 15 senior cit izens’ organisat ions (all of which were ILC-I Award
winners for having undertaken qualitat ive work for populat ion ageing), were given t raining by
environmental experts on different subjects like rainwater harvest ing, water conservat ion, solid
waste management , recycling, vermicompost ing etc. These t rained senior cit izens went back to
their hometowns to undertake at least one init iat ive there and sent ILC-I a well-documented
report on what they had done and its impact . A one day feedback workshop on the 31st of January
2017 three months later got these part icipants together again to reveal some wonderful
init iat ives undertaken by them. Their projects were substant ial evidence of the potent ial of Senior
cit izens ut ilized to the opt imal levels and the best five projects undertaken by the organisat ions
were given special awards.
ü Two special lectures by Prof. Dr. DilipSatbhai, the financial expert and Hon. Director, ILC-I, were
organized by ILC-I in December 2016 and January 2017, to give informat ion to the senior cit izens,
on the post -demonet izat ion era that was ushered in by the Indian Prime M inister, M r. Narendra

that the seniors had in their minds regarding the financial uncertainty that prevailed then. He
spoke on the ‘Implicat ions of demonet izat ion & its implicat ions/ ramificat ions with special focus
on the elderly.’
ü To mark UN’s Walk for Water Day of the 22nd of M arch 2017, 250 senior cit izens walked along a 2
kilometers route carrying placards with ‘Save water ’ & ‘Conserve Water ’ messages, and
advocat ing the need for saving water to the residents of the housing societ ies that they passed by
on the roads , followed by a lecture on “ Rainwater harvest ing.”
All the above programmes were supported by Gharda Chemicals Ltd., under CSR support .
ü ILC-I, as the Satellite Centre for the SAARC region of the United Nat ions’ Internat ional Inst itute on
Ageing’, M alta, conducted a five days’ t raining programme in M umbai on “ Social Gerontology”
which was attended by part icipants from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, in April 2016. The
Director of UN INIA, Dr. M arvin Formosa and the Programme Officer, M s. Rosette Bonello were the

ü ILC-I conducted a series of ‘M obile Literacy Training Programmes for Senior cit izens’ very
successfully for nearly hundred seniors unt il now. The object ive of this programmewas to t rain
seniors to adapt to a society that is fast moving towards becoming a ‘cashless’ one, and where
financial t ransact ions were becoming elect ronic and digital. The need now being to making use of
the mobile as a ‘bank’, but the senior cit izens today aren’t at all comfortable with using the mobile
as a medium for financial t ransact ions. So ILC-I organized these t raining programmes for senior
cit izens to be mobile-savvy and to help the seniors understand the use of a mobile for more than
just receiving and making calls. This project saw the seniors having a special one on one interact ion
with the t rainers and the seniors were very enthused about this new and much-needed
learning. This programmewas supported by Gharda Chemicals Ltd., under CSR support .
ü ILC-I’s VALUEDUCATION programme is an init iat ive in impart ing ethical values and morals to the
school children of especially the underprivileged sect ions of society, and most important ly this is
done by senior cit izens themselves on a voluntary basis. Values of respect for elders, cleanliness,
sanitat ion, hygiene, honesty, hardwork, integrity, respect for women and many more are imparted
to the school children by the senior cit izens through non-formal means of educat ion, like singing,
dancing, poetry, telling fables, mythology tales and legendary stories etc. Essay compet it ions are
held on topics related to elders/ grandparents and the prize-winning essays are given awards. 2500
children from 8 schoolswere covered under this programme. A prize-dist ribut ion ceremony was
held on the 24th of M arch 2017 to felicitate the winners of the essay compet it ions from each of the

RESEARCH:
ILC-I AWARDS:
ü ILC-I conducted a study survey of 250 senior cit izens for its study on “ Living arrangements and its
impact on the health of the elderly.” This survey essent ially revealed that though, the seniors who
lived by themselves or with their spouses were more likely to suffer from physical and mental ill-
health (especially, feelings of loneliness & the consequent depression), even those who lived in
families, had certain health issues that stemmed from the fact that the family environment was
not too congenial for their mental and physical well-being.This was supported by Gharda
Chemicals Ltd., under CSR support .
ü The ILC-I Awards (including the late B. G. Deshmukh and late Dr. S. D. Gokhale Awards) for the year
2016 were given away by the renowned philanthropist and industrialist , M s. Anu Aga, to the
senior cit izens’ organisat ions which have done commendable work for the well-being of society in
general and/ or senior cit izens in part icular, and to senior cit izens over the age of 70 years as a
lifet ime achievement award. The Anjani M ashelkar Inclusive Innovat ion Award given annually to

M ahatma Gandhi, Jayprakash Narayan, Pandit Din Dayal Upadhay had told us the concept of Antodaya means the person who is on the last step vulnerable and marginalized should be given priorit y for development . If t hey are developed then the development of t he society w ill take place. And then only the count ry w ill develop. Somet imes, it takes only a few words spoken in love to bring a person back from the brink. The concept of heredit y was deeply rooted, and when leprosy was thought to be inherited, persons w ith the disease (and their children) were shunned. As deformit y was considered divine punishment , st igma was associated w ith it . Because of associated ideas about heredit y and contagion, children and families of persons w ith leprosy also suffered st igma. Studies found that only about 5% of spouses living w ith persons w ith the disease cont racted it , making it clear that leprosy was not highly contagious. Leprosy is a disease, which st ill st r ikes fear in the societ ies as a mut ilat ing, disf iguring, contagious and incurable disease. The st igma at tached to leprosy leads to loss of employment even before manual labour becomes more diff icult due to disabilit y, which often result s from late or no t reatment . It also leads to exclusion from society, causing physical and emot ional dist ress. Even to this day, when leprosy is completely curable w ith M DT (mult i drug therapy), some part s of India uphold the belief t hat leprosy is a divine curse, a punishment of t he past sins, and a result of immoral sexual behaviour. These beliefs reinforce the image of t he „ leper ’ as being physically and morally unclean, to be blamed for cont ract ing the disease and therefore to be ost racized. The repulsive physical image, the fear of infect ion and the belief t hat it is incurable are the root causes of t he inhuman t reatment that is often meted out to those who have leprosy. At all levels of society, leprosy often makes women more vulnerable, socially and economically, t han men. Hence gender equit y needs equal focus besides reducing st igma and discriminat ion. We have never considered Leprosy Affected Person is a part of our society. Leprosy at tached to the body w ill be cured by medicine but what about the leprosy of our narrow mind how are we going to eradicate that . I t herefore st rongly feel t hat Leprosy Pat ient should be t reated at home and not in the hospital. Due to which the family is not broken. Leprosy is hundred percent curable this scient if ic t ruth is also people are not accept ing. This is really painful. Government today feels that t he Leprosy has been eradicated but t he t ruth is t hat every year new cases of leprosy are arising. Fear of leprosy like a darkroom where only negat ives are developed. Even Doctors are afraid of t reat ing leprosy pat ient . Government failed to educate these doctors so far. I don’t understand how leprosy is counted in terms of percentage. Person who is affected by leprosy is suffered by cent percent st igma. Percentage is a parameter it is a f ict ion but not a t ruth, Truth is his st igma which is painful. ILU-HA organize workshop to empower these vulnerable people and create awareness about leprosy the facts and scient if ic t ruth to not only Leprosy Affected Persons but also educate general public.
