TESCO, The Drilling Innovation Company, hasnvested $50 million and six years of intensiveesearch and development in elevating theevolutionary CASING DRILLING processrom an experimental procedure to a provenuccess. The process, which eliminates drill-tring tripping, is inherently more cost-efficientnd safer than conventional rotary drilling. Itan cut the time required to drill a well by 20o 30%, helps avoid unscheduled events, savesperating and labor costs, and reduces capital
nvestment through faster field development.
Simultaneous drilling and casingaves time
n the CASING DRILLING process, thewell is drilled and cased simultaneously, usingtandard oilfield casing. The bottomholessembly (BHA) is latched into the bottom jointf casing and is run and retrieved through theasing, via wireline. Using wireline to conveyhe BHA is much faster than conventionalripping with a drill string.
For directional and horizontal wells, theCASING DRILLING BHA can be fittedwith conventional steerable motor andMWD tools or with Rotary SteerableSystems. LWD can readily be included, also. Since these tools are run andretrieved inside casing, they are protectedfrom the harsh downhole environmentwhile in transit. Drilling contractorsexisting rig fleets can be easily modifiedor adapted to accommodate the CASING
DRILLING process. For servicecompanies, the process presents newopportunities for tool development.
Elimination of drill-stringtripping increases safety
The CASING DRILLING processincreases safety because it requires fewerpeople on the rig floor and less pipehandling than conventional rotary drilling. It also eliminates unscheduled events that
result from tripping the drill-string kicks, unintentional sidetracks, casing wear, hole problems due to swab and surgepressures, and formation sloughing andswelling.

Process reduces costs and environmentalmpact
Because the CASING DRILLING process eliminatesrill-string tripping, the rig requires only a Range III single
mast. Therefore, the rig is smaller, it can be moved inewer loads, and it requires less horsepower, reducingapital investment. The CASING DRILLING processlso requires less drilling fluid, which further reducesosts and environmental impact.
The TESCO CASING DRILLINGprocess has also beenemonstrated to add value through improved boreholeuality and reduced reservoir damage. Better boreholeuality translates to improved cement jobs, better quality
ogs and reduced risk from wellbore instability. The provenPlastering Effect resulting from TESCOs technologyan enhance reservoir productivity through reducing orliminating fluid losses to the producing horizon. Overall ,roject economics can be greatly enhanced by accessingnd proving deliverability of otherwise marginal reserves.
Rigs can be retrofitted or purpose-built
Retrofitting an existing rig with CASING DRILLINGquipment is easy to do and does not interfere with itsse for conventional drilling. The versatility gained byonverting it to a dual-purpose rig makes it suitable forse on a wider range of wells and increases contractpportunities for its owner.
New land rigs in various designs are available from TESCOwith all necessary CASING DRILLING equipment fullyntegrated into the rig package. This equipment includesTop Drive, internal and external drive systems for rotating
he casing, and a wireline winch for running and a retrievinghe BHA and other downhole tools.

TESCO has a wide range offit-for-purpose equipment
The fit-for-purpose equipment TESCOhas developed for the CASING
DRILLINGprocess includes pump-down
and pulling tools for the BHA and a Drill
Lock Assembly (DLA) that secures the
BHA to the casing. Specially designed
underreamers provide an excellent rate
of penetration (ROP) and have a reliable
collapse mechanism for tripping.
In addition to these downhole tools
TESCO has developed many CASINGDRILLING accessories, including:
stabilizers; centralizers; wear protection;
cement floats; and, casing connection
torque rings. These accessories are
specifically designed to protect the
casing from drilling wear, centralize the
casing properly for optimal cementing,
and ensure that standard oilfield casing
connections can be used reliably in a
variety of vertical and directional well
designs.
In addition to their proven value in
CASING DRILLING applications many
of these accessory items also are used
with TESCOs Casing Drive System
to help ensure that casing strings can
be successfully run in troublesome
conventionally drilled wells.
