Artinsite Art installation at the new Thomas Cook Children’s Critical Care Centre, King’s College Hospital, LondonDesigned by Martin Jones in collaboration with Louisa Williams, Artinsite, Architect Adam Baines, Brunton Boobyer Partnership

The briefTo produce and install an art installation that would appeal to young patients and their parents. The aim was to give the centre a consistent identity, with a welcoming feel for each ward and patient bed, and to provide a positive focus for children by creating an interactive space that could be personalised.

The workLeading to the intensive care ward, we produced an 11m frieze of Camber Sands, East Sussex, which created a calming,

dream-like feel. We personalised each bedspace with individual kites and beach toys set against blue skies.

For the high dependency ward, we produced a vibrant 11m frieze facing the open bed bays themed around a tropical island. Large scale images of tropical fish and underwater reef scenes continued the theme on bedhead boards, detracting attention from medical equipment.

All graphics were produced using high quality Lambda digital prints wrap-mounted to fire-rated MDF with a hard wearing ‘crystal’ laminate. Custom formed acrylic pockets were fixed to the bedhead boards and magnetic ‘pin boards’ allowed parents to display photographs and greetings cards. The imagery was also used in pre-printed dry-wipe magnetic team boards and ward literature.

ResultsThe work has been nominated for the Award for Best Use of Visual Art in Healthcare.

Artinsite Bedhead boardsDesigned by Louisa Williams, Artinsite

The briefArtinsite’s bedhead boards are supplied to hospitals to create a cheerful, welcoming environment for patients, whilst incorporating useful, practical features to support the nursing team.

We were briefed by Artinsite to provide a production solution that incorporated design, functionality and safety considerations in a cost-effective manner.

The workWe produced frosted acrylic bedhead boards with a clear, crisp, modern look that presented the vibrant, colourful flower graphics to best effect.

As well as their aesthetic appeal, the boards were designed to hold important patient information, with features such as acrylic balcony shelves and dry-wipe boards to easily update patient details.

Safety was key to this project. The acrylic material was chosen for its hygienic qualities and, with an industrial floor grade over-seal, could be bleach cleaned. Stainless steel snake-eye screws were used instead of ordinary screws that can hold dirt and rust. Deep acrylic slides were incorporated for easy cleaning and the acrylic balconies were mounted on a series of small risers to prevent dust build-up. All slide-in boards were wipe-clean front and rear.

The resultA welcoming, practical, safe addition to the hospital ward, appreciated by patients and staff alike.

Asprey Christmas windows for the London flagship storeDesigned by Asprey and Vivid Design & Events

The briefTo fully implement the Christmas scheme for Asprey’s flagship Bond Street store for the third year running. The brief was to tie in with Asprey’s 225th anniversary celebrations and reflect a traditional English Christmas with a contemporary twist.

The workTo create visual impact, a swirl motif was taken from the cast iron balustrade running along the first floor of this historic store.

We negative cut frosted vinyl into irregular sized ‘swirl’ patterns and applied it to the inside of the glass. The effect was stunning inside and out. The subtle metallic sparkle of the vinyl, enhanced by the lighting scheme in the windows, created a ‘winter wonderland’.

Starting at 6pm on Saturday and finishing late on Sunday, we also installed a 7.5m decorated tree, 15,000 bulbs worth of Christmas lights and dressed a total of 28 windows over two floors with 170m of garland and 32 wreaths.

The resultsAsprey’s most successful Christmas window to date – both in sales and positive customer reaction.

Asprey Window scheme, Hakan Rosenius’ Spring/Summer Collection 2008Designed by Asprey and Vivid Design & Events

The briefAsprey commissioned us to produce and install a window scheme to replicate and enhance the subtle silk prints, brocades and embroidery of the latest Hakan Rosenius Collection.

The workWe have worked closely with Asprey for the last four years, implementing all window schemes. Here we were asked to propose a technical solution for colourways, design the layout of the panels and produce and install the display itself.

The scheme consisted of six windows, each with a painted back panel to match the colours of the collection. Over 500 silk flowers were sourced and applied to the back panels to be sympathetically displayed amongst the garments, accessories, jewellery and lifestyle items. Black vinyl borders allowed us to reframe the window and give the customer a clear, uninterrupted view of the products.

The resultsOne Saudi client wanted to buy the entire scheme! Sales of the collection have been excellent, with a wonderful reaction to the scheme from customers and staff alike.

Boden Seasonal graphics project, Walton-on-Thames storeDesigned by Boden

The briefWe were asked to produce and install high-impact graphics for Boden’s Walton-on-Thames store. Our solution needed to be cost-effective enough to allow for regular changes.

The workConsidering the huge dimensions of the graphics involved, and the required seasonality, we recommended a Matrix Frame system using fabric graphics. Without compromising quality, this system allows the graphics to be changed quickly and easily to keep production and installation costs to a minimum.

The store’s double-height entrance hall features a 6m × 5m graphic, which generates enormous impact from the street and for shoppers entering the store. We also supplied 7m × 2.3m window graphics, wrapped hanging wall graphics and floor-to-ceiling graphics to give a sensational backdrop to product displays.

The resultsToo early for trading data yet, but the new graphics are universally popular with clients and staff, and they certainly succeed in separating the Boden store from the neighbouring shops.

Hugo Boss Window scheme, Liverpool storeDesigned by Hugo Boss

The briefThis commission from Hugo Boss was to produce and install high quality window graphics to create greater impact than product and mannequins alone.

The workThe Hugo Boss Liverpool store is a first floor site with large windows, some as high as 15m. This latest design scheme involved adding graphic windows to the more traditional props and products to increase visibility and impact.

Using the new Autumn/Winter photography shot by Mario Testino and Terry Richardson, we printed outstanding quality, full height graphics up to 9m tall to optically clear film. This was then backed up with white and applied to the inside of the graphic windows to give 100% coverage. Branding in cut vinyl was also added.

The resultsThe store is going from strength to strength. Since the installation of this scheme, trading has been excellent, with quarterly targets exceeded. Customers and staff regularly comment on the strength and impact of the windows.

JD Sports Matrix LED light boxes for new store openings, including the flagship store in LiverpoolDesigned by Dalziel & Pow

The briefAs the UK dealer for Matrix Frame, we were asked to produce and install the revolutionary Matrix LED Light Box system at JD Sports ‘Class A’ store openings, including their new flagship store in Liverpool.

The workThis innovative light box system uses an LED light system that is maintenance free and, with very low power consumption and no heat emission, it offers a big environmental advantage over standard fluorescent light

boxes. The Matrix fabric graphic makes it very simple and quick to change the image, avoiding expensive installation. It also has a stylish, slimline appearance with no border.

Working closely with Dalziel & Pow, we created bespoke specifications for the light boxes and worked on layouts and artwork. We then produced 14 light boxes with varying graphics for four stores, including an 11m high installation at the flagship store in Liverpool. The other light boxes were approximately 3.5m high × 2m wide.

Our specialist installers installed the light boxes and graphics working directly with the JD Sports project team.

L’Oréal Luxury Products Division In-store graphics for over 500 stores

The briefWe’ve worked with L’Oréal for over 20 years, producing in-store graphics for over 500 stores in the UK and Ireland. Adhering to strict brand guidelines, colour reproduction and overall quality are of paramount importance.

The workAlmost every graphic is a different shape and size, so each project starts with extensive adaptive artworking to convert international guidelines to fit the many different crops.

At the same time, colour testing across many different media ensures consistency of colour when the finished site is viewed in its entirety. Colour correction and retouching is undertaken on selective areas to create the best match to the product and the most striking result.

Once approved all graphics are produced in-house, collated and either distributed to store or installed.

The resultsOn-going reinforcement of L’Oréal’s brand and market share – and a lasting client relationship.

Links of London Launching a new range of watchesDesigned by Links of London and Vivid Design & Events

The briefTo launch Links of London’s new range of watches, our retail specialist division was asked to create a dramatic, fashion forward environment within an art gallery in London’s Bruton Street.

The workA stunning backdrop of large format images, shot by photographer Lachlan Bailey, drew the viewer into the range. The watches were displayed on sleek leather bound and acrylic plinths.

The scale of the images called for ingenuity in the execution and an intricate eye for detail. As well as producing all the plinths, we printed 27 large images using the Lambda process to achieve the highest quality. These were wrap-mounted to 5mm thick, foam-centred board with an overlap join to create the continuous image. Each print section was 3,500mm high × various widths and was fixed on-site to timber frames, avoiding any permanent fixings to the walls of the gallery.

We carried out a full site survey, generating all graphic measurements and then installed all graphics and plinths in 12 hours flat.

The resultsA fantastic reaction from visitors to the gallery and positive editorial coverage in all the major fashion publications.

Nokia ‘Music Almighty’ in-store and window graphics campaign, London flagship storeDesigned by Euro RSCG KLP

The briefWe were commissioned by Nokia to implement the latest in-store campaign promoting their XpressMusic range of mobile handsets.

The workThe window display for this campaign featured a colourful and impactful adaptation of the distinctive Nokia headphones, and was applied by McKenzie Clark as vinyl.

Once in store, customers could interact with the handsets on demo cubes created by us. We constructed made-to-measure plinths with colour co-ordinated metal rods to hold the double-sided, cut-to-shape, printed headphones. Cables were attached to make them even more realistic. We also printed this image to optically clear film and applied it to the store’s windows.

The resultsThis campaign has succeeded in drawing in customers from the much-cluttered Regent Street location, and has almost doubled the store’s footfall. Our work ultimately led to an increase in the sales of the promoted headsets (not to mention requests from customers to buy the graphics as well).

Nokia ‘Navigation’ campaign, Summer 2008, London flagship storeDesigned by Euro RSCG KLP

The briefOur brief was to produce, install and implement the new and unique ‘Navigation’ campaign for Nokia’s Regent Street store.

The workThis interactive campaign celebrated the launch of the new Navigation handsets, and offered consumers a 360-degree retail experience. They could see it, participate in it and be responsible for its outcome.

The campaign required fish tanks, audio-visual equipment, real artists and a giant artist wall. We created plinths to hold the fish tanks and mechanical arms to hold the handsets. Cut vinyl decals were added to the windows, and a double-sided globe of clear acrylic manufactured for the interior of the store. Interactive audio-visual equipment included LCD laptops, programmed and maintained by McKenzie Clark.

The resultsToo early to say, but the feedback has been excellent. Big crowds have gathered to watch the fish tanks and have their favourite London places drawn on the live artist window. The scheme is now being rolled out to other stores.

The Podge Lunch Design agency showcaseDesigned by The Brand Union

The briefThe Podge Lunch is an annual event celebrating the creativity and diversity of the design industry. Founded by Phil Jones and now in its 15th year, the event brings together leaders from the design world and acts as a platform to showcase the talent of individual design agencies.

Our brief was to work with this year’s chosen agency, The Brand Union.

The workWe were able to give The Brand Union over 100 different printing media to choose from, allowing them to showcase their creative ideas to best effect.

Working with this year’s theme, ‘Food for thought’, they asked us to produce voile tablecloths, subtly overprinted with plates. Each of the 150 place settings was beautifully typeset with a famous food-related quote.

We produced vibrant mesh banners to adorn the main dining area, along with specially designed napkins and bottle labels.

The resultsAn impressive showcase for The Brand Union and another hugely successful event on the Podge Lunch calendar.

River Island Clothing Co. Ltd On-going graphic production

The briefWe’ve been working with River Island for over five years, producing a huge variety of in-store, seasonal window and hoarding graphics for over 250 stores in the UK, Ireland and Europe.

The workOur dedicated account team liaise with River Island on a daily basis. We manage the graphics database, the production, distribution and installation for all newly re-fitted and upgraded stores, as well as updating existing store graphics with the latest graphic concepts. The schedule can include up to 60 separate installations over a 4-week period.

One recent execution was a fantastic, three-dimensional mural to launch a new ladies line. We printed directly to pre-painted, vacuum-formed, plastic brick-effect panels and installed them in sections to create a ‘textured’ mural in various sizes up to 8m square.

We also printed directly to 3mm and 5mm rigid PVC to create large graphic ‘product walls’ to promote a particular range.

Perhaps our most unforgettable project was a large hoarding on Oxford Street. We installed full colour printed Foamex panels to a total size of 8m high x 16m wide using a scissor lift in the pouring rain in the early hours of the morning!

The resultsUp-to-the-minute, impactful graphics to reinforce River Island’s brand and increase sales.

Store Twenty One Window graphics for three new concept storesDesigned by Dalziel & Pow

The briefWorking closely with Dalziel & Pow, McKenzie Clark were asked to create a high quality window graphic treatment for three new concept stores for Store Twenty One. The treatment had to be changed seasonally without needing a professional installer.

The workWe recommended our ‘Magnawall’ product, which is printed directly to thin rollable Polyester with a ferrous backing. This ‘sticks’ to a 0.7mm thick magnetic rubber applied directly to the wall. Replacement graphics can be sent to stores rolled in a tube for low cost distribution and applied quickly and easily by store staff.

We also produced and applied vinyl cut decals to the inside of the windows and wet mounted large lifestyle images printed to self adhesive vinyl and applied to fitting room doors.

The resultsIn the words of our client, “The graphics are so vibrant and seamless they look like light box graphics”.

Thomas Pink ‘Splash of Colour’ campaign window scheme, all stores, Summer 2008Designed by Yellow Door and Thomas Pink

The briefOur commission from Thomas Pink was to produce and implement the new ‘Splash of Colour’ campaign.

The workThis truly three-dimensional window scheme featured the same bright colours as the Thomas Pink garment range, as well as props and busts to add charm and personality.

The graphics were printed by McKenzie Clark on a variety of substrates, including large and small wrapped canvas, and lightweight board to suit the space and access available within the windows. The extra dimension came from props such as easels, brushes, palettes, wooden mannequins and busts with articulated arms and heads – all serving to bring the scheme to life.

The resultsThis campaign generated a great deal of customer interest, and helped to create an uplift in the sales of womenswear – especially those garments featured in the scheme.

Wordsearch Marketing suites

The briefWordsearch is the international leader in marketing for architecture, property and the building environment.

We were asked to produce and install marketing suites for prestigious sites, such as St. Botolphs, EC1 and the former Dickens & Jones building in Regent Street, both of which are being developed into several smaller retail outlets and residential spaces. Our brief was to capture the imagination and emotion of the buyer.

The workWe used digital wallpaper to create large feature walls which could powerfully communicate a range of marketing messages.

Wallpaper is more durable and long-lasting than self-adhesive vinyl. It forms around any man-made structure with seamless joins, reflecting direct and ambient light to give natural colour warmth.

We used a bespoke, purpose-made industrial wallpaper, which offers Class 1 fire rating and antifungal properties, making it suitable for marine, medical, commercial and residential projects.

The resultsStriking and imaginative marketing suites that powerfully conveyed the quality and potential of each individual site.

Zurich Connect Interactive display for the 2008 International Motor Show at ExcelDesigned by Publicis

The briefWe were commissioned by Publicis to produce a large interactive display that automatically logged the number of visitors to the 2008 Motor Show and used these figures in an innovative marketing message for Zurich Connect.

The workSensors at both entrances transmitted visitor numbers directly to receivers built into the display unit’s LEDs. The display showed daily visitor figures and calculated the number of these visitors who would be able to save money by switching to a Zurich Connect insurance product.

The freestanding unit measured 3m × 3m × 150mm deep, with a 2”× 2” box steel frame construction located onto an 8mm steel base plate. The unit was clad in a brushed aluminium finish. The graphic was printed directly on the RHO 800 onto an aluminium composite material, with the apertures for the flush mounted LEDs routed out on the Zund cutter. The two LED modules were manufactured in Zurich Connect’s corporate colours and flush mounted inside the unit.

The resultsA striking, innovative display unit that strongly conveyed Zurich Connect’s brand and marketing message to Motor Show visitors.
