A Message from the Premier

As Premier of the Province of British Columbia, I am pleased to welcome everyone attending the CaseIT 2015 International MIS Case Competition. Since its inception in 2004, CaseIT has grown into the largest annual international undergraduate IT strategy business case competition in North America. This annual four-day event promises to gather the brightest minds from top universities around the world. It will provide an excellent opportunity for networking and discussion related to the ever-changing IT world. I know a lot of preparation goes into organizing an experience of this magnitude. I would like to take this opportunity to commend each and every student who has dedicated their time and efforts into making this event such a success. Once again, please accept my best wishes for an exciting and educational Competition. Sincerely,

Christy Clark Premier

M E S S A G EF R O M T H E

As President of the CIO Association of Canada, Vancouver chapter, and

on behalf of our board and members, I would like to extend to all of you a warm welcome to the International CaseIT competition. We consider our sponsorship of CaseIT a win-win partnership and solid investment to help students think about their path to be the next generation of senior IT leaders and CIOs; and that’s why the CIO Association of Canada, as a founding sponsor has supported this competition for eleven consecutive years. We provide economic support, but also senior IT leaders and CIOs that understand that the business they are part of rely heavily on them to drive business transformation, so are perfect to lead discussion panels and as judges. This year’s theme “The Internet of Things” (IoT) highlights how quickly our economies are changing, the opportunities that leveraging new technologies can bring and the risk of ignoring them. The race is on for commercialization of the next best idea, which can come from all types of companies: like Kolibree, creating their digital business case with an offer to improve your health by monitoring, through sensors, a simple everyday activity and then implementing a solution leveraging IoT. Other more traditional companies like GE that have transformed themselves once again by providing smart industrial machines loaded with digital sensors leveraging cloud and IoT, creating their Predictivity brand and GEs common software platform “Predix”, then becoming a digital solutions company which generated incremental revenues of $800M US in 2013 and $1B estimated for 2014. All the way to companies like Google with their long-term project to create a self-driving car, requiring 1.1M kms. of road tests, which are now capable of detecting and reacting to hundreds of objects simultaneously by using not only GPS, but radars, cameras, 64 beam lasers and inertia sensors to navigate in the real world, thus having the potential for transforming an industry with more than $1.4 trillion US$ in revenue for FY 2013. Computer Science and MIS University graduates are key in this new economy where they can immerse themselves in new startup companies, technology companies or even traditional ones where they can contribute or lead in the creation of business cases for ideas that leverage mobile, cloud and IoT. We look forward to CaseIT 2015, and to many more years of affiliation.

Alex Buhler President, CIO Association of Canada, Vancouver Chapter CIO, MEC

M E S S A G EF R O M T H E

Welcome to CaseIT 2015 and we hope you enjoy your stay here in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. After months of hard work, the Organizing Committee is excited to host you throughout the events of the 12th annual CaseIT.

This year, CaseIT has expanded to include 19 schools and InTech, a parallel case competition for students at Simon Fraser University. In addition, we decided to explore a theme that is complementary to our theme topic last year - Big Data. At CaseIT 2015, we will be exploring the challenges and possibilities of the Internet of Things and its effect on our future.

The Internet of Things will give us the opportunity to change the way we live and work, but like many opportunities, it also presents many challenges. Anything we can dream of - from mobile devices, transportation, infrastructure, and much more - will all be connected to the Internet. We are all partaking in the Internet of Things in our daily lives, sometimes without even knowing. In fact, there will be nearly 26 billion devices on the Internet of Things by 2020. The challenges stemming from connecting and supporting all these devices create challenges for all organizations, no matter what size. In addition, by equipping everything to be seamlessly and continuously connected to the Internet, there will be an infinite amount of data collected. Being able to process this big data into information will give us greater efficiency and effectiveness in everything that we do.

Of course, CaseIT 2015 could not have been made possible without the support of our sponsors. We would especially like to extend our gratitude towards our Founding Sponsor, SFU Beedie School of Business as well as our Foundational Sponsors: CIO Association of Canada – Vancouver Chapter and SAP. We would also like to thank our past, present and returning sponsors who deliver their generosity in many ways that have enabled us to reach higher goals year after year.

We would also like to thank the Organizing Comittee for your hard work in preparing for the competition. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we truly wish you enjoy your time here in Vancouver. Beyond the competition, we hope your experiences here will create enduring memories and develop lifelong friendships that span across the globe.

Our best wishes,

Gwendoline WongCheryl Chan

OVERVIEW OF

CaseIT is an annual international undergraduate business case competition with a strong Management Information Systems (MIS) focus designed to find the best and brightest in strategic IT case analysis. It is a forum where students from various backgrounds of IT and business can showcase their skills in areas such as teamwork, problem solving, and critical thinking to a panel of industry professionals.

The structure of the competition consists of 19 teams competing against each other in a 24-hour case deliberation. The teams are divided into five divisions with four teams in each division. There are two rounds

CASEIT

of presentations where the top team of each division can advance to the second and final round. The runner up of each division will enter into a wildcard round where the winner will advance to the final round.

CaseIT 2015 is a four-day event that encompasses more than just case analysis and presentation. Participants engage with industry professionals and discuss current IT issues at CaseIT’s Corporate Evening. Moreover, students will be able to network with other future business leaders at events such as the Welcome Dinner and the Awards Banquet.

Inception, under the directorship of Paul Cyr and Zephaniah Wong, CaseIT began as a competition between undergraduate teams within Simon Fraser University.

In 2006, under the leadership of Andrew Kumar, CaseIT reached a national level through the inclusion of schools from all across Canada.

CaseIT 2014 saw the addition of the Wildcard Round through Jillian-Joy Marlinga.

Steven Chia, with a vision for sustainability, consolidated the reputation of CaseIT as an international undergrad case competition as 16 teams from across the globe converged to Vancouver for a 24-hour case competition.

Furthering the progression of CaseIT, Chair Nima Sarhangpour played an integral role in the incorporation of the CaseIT Foundation. CaseIT 2012 also saw the first University from Australia take part in the event.

Peter Lew celebrated CaseIT’s 10th year since inception and welcomed the first Latin American Team to the Preliminary Round.

Under the guidance of Rey Lim, CaseIT 2008 officially established itself as a global competition by bringing teams from four continents – North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

As Vice President of Business Technology for Vision Critical (visioncritical.com), Diraj Goel champions a people-first ethos. For Mr. Goel, understanding how people use and interact with information systems and technology is more important than the technology itself. To that end, Mr. Goel has been instrumental in Vision Critical’s adoption of an All Cloud Enterprise Strategy (ACE); an initiative created to empower and enable a global community of employees to use any device at their disposal while remaining compliant to Vision Critical’s standards for confidentiality and privacy. The majority of Mr. Goel experience has been focused enterprise-sized transformations of business and technology. However, he has an entrepreneurial spirit that has helped him play a pivotal roll in fostering Vision Critical’s growth from a Vancouver based tech-startup to a global customer intelligence leader with nearly 1000 employees and $150m in annual revenue.

Olga Volkoff is an Associate Professor of MIS and Associate Dean of Research and Faculty Development. She came to Beedie in 2005 after five years in Massachusetts where she taught at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
