Residential Case Study According to The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, researchers believe nasal allergies affect about 50 million people in the United States. Indoor and outdoor allergies can be seasonal or chronic allergies. Many people with allergies often have more than one type of allergy and are allergic to multiple allergens. The most common indoor/outdoor allergy triggers include tree, grass and weed pollen, mold spores, dust mites, cockroaches, and cat or dog dander. For one homeowner in suburban Pennsylvania, finding relief from her chronic and seasonal allergies was a near impossible challenge. Her daily medication regimen, to manage allergy symptoms, included triple therapy with medications like Flonase®, Zyrtec®, and Singulair®. On occasion, the homeowner also required inhaled albuterol to open her lung passages after the onset of allergy symptoms. The homeowner’s health was always affected greatly by her allergies. As a child, the homeowner was especially vulnerable to severe allergy symptoms when spending prolonged periods of time indoors with pets. As an adult, spending just a few minutes in the waiting area of either a veterinary office or a pet groomer establishment could put the homeowner at risk for a severe allergic reaction. Despite pet allergies, the homeowner loves her pets and has three dogs. The home owner’s residence is a 5 bedroom 4,600 sq ft custom built home. The home is well insulated and its envelope is appropriately weatherized from air infiltration. The home has multiple heating and cooling zones served by (2) 20,000 Btu furnaces and (2) 3 ton 12 seer split AC units. The HVAC system is controlled by an advanced automation system and utilizes electronic air filtration technology. Case Study: Residential IAQ

In the summer of 2015, the homeowner was introduced to Phenomenal Aire™ by the product manufacturer’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Robert Miller. The homeowner agreed to purchase and install two (2) Phenomenal Aire™ Series R CPG units. The home owner also agreed to allow Top Product Innovations to perform multiple indoor air quality studies pre and post installation of the R-6 units.

Indoor air data was captured utilizing an air sample pump model PATI-100. The air sample pump was supplied by the laboratory that performed data analysis, Prism Analytical Technologies of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

Initial Findings Prism Analytical report data indicated that the levels of volatile organic compounds present in the home were severe. The average VOC reading in a home range from 500-1,500 ng/l whereas the findings for the IAQ study registered greater than 3,000 ng/l.

It was identified that the high number of plug-in air freshers being utilized to mask pet odor throughout the home were creating unhealthy levels of VOCs. The analytical data also identified moderate levels of mold present in the home’s air. Based upon the age, condition and properly functioning utilities in the home, mold sources other than seasonal airborne mold and pollen were ruled out as cause of the high mold count.

Results of Phenomenal AireTM

Within a matter of days of Phenomenal Aire operating, the homeowner noted a remarkable change in the quality of the home’s air. Pet odors were being controlled without the use of plugin air fresheners. The homeowner noted a decrease in allergy symptoms. The home owner also noted a sudden increase in dirt/dust collecting on the HVAC return air grills throughout the home. One of the many positive effects of using ions to scrub air is their ability to attracting like molecules together. This process is called agglomeration. In the case of dust, the like molecules stick together forming larger dust particles. Having larger dust particles increases the effectiveness of a HVAC system’s air filters.

Roughly three years after the installation of Phenomenal Aire, the homeowner has reduced her daily use of allergy medications from 3 products to 2. She no longer requires the occasional use of an inhaler while at home. The ongoing use of medications is essentially to manage allergy symptoms associated with time spent outside of the home.
