scope of project For one of the most environmentally-sensitive new buildings in Portland, project architect Holst and the team of developers wanted to source a natural wood siding that could be stained and applied in a creative way, and that met high standards for forestry and local, low-carbon sourcing. Our FSC 100% Western Red Cedar siding in a Se- lect Tight Knot grade was selected and milled into a custom channel profile with a stain pre-applied. By partnering with Sustainable Northwest Wood, the project developers were able to obtain this siding and have it custom milled, kiln dried, and fire treated within weeks of ordering it. From harvest site to jobsite, including the additional processing and fire treatment, the wood traveled less than 100 miles. PEOPLE & PLANET This cedar was harvested from a forest maintenance program at Camp Adams, less than 40 miles from the job- site. The maintenance program uses super-selective logging designed to promote forest health at this private church camp, whose forest is managed to FSC standards by Portland forestry firm Trout Mountain. with the goal of keeping the forest healthy and whole, ensuring a diverse representation of species and ages. The selection of this wood also supported the work of seven local small businesses. This was an important factor for the developers, for whom social equity is important.
