Vulcan Materials Company is the largest producer of construction aggregates in the United States. Vulcan is primarily engaged in the production of materials including crushed stone, sand and gravel, which get used for all forms of constructions, as well as asphalt, cement and ready-mixed concrete.

the Client

the AskOver a series of acquisitions made by Vulcan, the need for timely and accurate information grew, prompting the company to seek financial consolidation and reporting across business units, including the newly acquired units. Vulcan wanted to introduce a system that would consolidate the disparate systems in order to achieve better coordination with plants, promoting faster synchronization of orders and credit status limits.

To meet its objectives, Vulcan firmed up its plan to implement and roll out Oracle applications including Finance (AP, AR, GL, FA, and CM), Projects and SCM (INV, PO, BOM, etc.) for all business units. Quadrant 4 was engaged to ensure Vulcan reached its desired objectives as many challenges were present:

Legacy Systems: With the view to foster an easy flow of information across different business areas, Vulcan decided to interface Oracle apps with the various legacy systems including JWS, CAB, PM, and SDB. As data was present in different formats, legacy data was to be cleaned and consolidated before applications were interfaced with the Oracle applications.

User Interface Customizations: Although Oracle applications for all the business units were to be deployed centrally, customizations based on user requirements needed to be completed for every business unit.

Oracle Workflow Customizations: Mapping business processes with Oracle workflows were not going to be a straightforward procedure as customer business processes didn’t sync fully with the Oracle workflows. Such possibilities were to be taken into consideration prior to customizing standard Oracle workflows to meet business requirements of Vulcan.

Quadrant 4 carried out a successful implementation of Oracle applications 11.5.10.2 and enabled a phased rollout of Oracle applications for the various divisions belonging to Vulcan. Quadrant 4 executed the implementation of Oracle applications 11.5.10.2 through five well-defined phases, including:

Solution

Quadrant 4 implemented customizations including data conversions, enhancements and

interfaces during this phase. Data from legacy systems was migrated and cleansed. Self-

service pages were modified by utilizing Oracle Application Framework (OAF). Oracle

applications were interfaced with different legacy systems during this phase.BUILD

Quadrant 4 built alternate solutions that were defined during the planning stage to

support business requirements. Different workflows were customized to automate

business requirements of Vulcan. Reports related to sales, assets, receivables and

payable modules were customized.DESIGN

Gaining a thorough understanding of Vulcan’s objectives, Quadrant 4 made a

comparison of Vulcan’s business requirements and standard functionalities, identifying

gaps during this phase. Quadrant 4 came up with workarounds by way of alternate

solutions to bridge the gap and meet Vulcan’s business needs.PLANNING

Quadrant 4 carried out business system test and validated the solution. The

implemented applications gained acceptance from key as well as end users after user

acceptance test was performed. Performance testing was also conducted to ensure that

the solution paved way for optimal performance to meet Vulcan’s business needs.TESTING

With successful outcome from user acceptance testing, Quadrant 4 prepared the

production environment for the new system to go-live. Quadrant 4 guided end users

to handle the production environment effectively, with the post-production support

allowing Vulcan’s end users to make the best use of the implemented.GO-LIVE
